lOVE THE EVOLUTION OF SYNTHWAVE. Started out as simple instrumentals, then moved to 80s style, then it became its own style. Now you have darksynth, and even 90s style synth similar to depeche mode and NIN like the bad dreamers. I really wish gunship had gone more into darksynth for their last album. I really hated unicorn. Not because the songs were bad. But because they changed the style. sped up the tempo, and started incorporating weird elements that are cringey. I get they wanted to go more in the tahnee kaine and the trianglz direction. But they should of made the music darker, like dark all day, with a bit of darksynth. I think the genre is moving more towards a darksynth direction. at least the bands who are evolving and stying relevant are moving in this direction. Dark synth is more in line with cyber punk. and cyberpunk is the future. Its the now. I would really dig it, if bands started incorporating more ebsm like le castlvania. Ebsm is electronic body synth music. It is NOT edm. just like synthwave, is NOT edm. Gunship, was the tip of the spear. they kind of screwed themselves by changing their sound so dramatically. sure if they wanted to do more fun songs, go for it. But dont change your style in the bulk of the music. Thats how you go in the direction of tears for fears in the 90s. while depeche mode in the 90s stayed relevant because they started doing more music like NIN. which was the natural darker progression of 80s new wave. Thats always the trend. Music starts off lighter, more happy go lucky, and it gets darker. You have to be able to see the trends for the pov of hindsight. What that means is, you have to see the trends, ahead of time, from viewing what people are into from a distance. Ghan, the singer of depeche mode, saw this. He went to LA in 1990, and when he came back to depeche mode to write their next album, he knew where the trend was going because of how popular bands like nin were getting. so he saw the change in trend, before it happened. He didnt pay attention to what was popular outside of their genre. Like tears for fears, came into the 90s thinking, grunge is popular, lets do something like grunge. When grunge, was an entirely different style of music, a style of music, their fans didnt want to hear from tears for fears. Because TFF was already formed. If those guys wanted to do grunge, they should of started new bands. grunge was popular with entirely different generation of fans. But the fans of Tears for fears, were already established. So by changing their ound so dramatically, they turned off their core audience. and couldnt form a new one. This is a common mistake movies, video games, and music make very often. They fail to realize, to rebuild a fan base, would take a phenomenon. It would take longer than they had time to spend. and no one was going wait around for them. They couldnt see where their genre was going. This is an easy trap to fall into, if you ae only focused on what is trendy outside of your style of genre. Keep in mind with the internet, their is no longer one trend. TBH their never was only one trend. But back in the mtv era, it was harder to see because of what got played on mtv. Today, every bands page, is its own timeline. if Bush were smart, they would still be making purely 90s music. This is how TOOL stayed relevant for the last 30 years. Bands like that, shouldnt be able to stay active for that long, so what sets TOOL apart from other 90s bands? They stuck to their guns. They didnt change their sound very much. Only getting better at what they do and made the songs feel more epic. Synthwave mirrors 80s new wave, in alot of ways. Had tears for fears went more into the gothic synth direction like nin and depeche mode, they probably never would of stopped amking music. If synthwave bands want to avoid this, they need to pay attention to what they are doing. You dont change your sound. Thats how bands become irelevant. They think changing with the times is how you stay relevant. But all you have to change, is the attitude. The way things make people feel. If I were gunship, I would be leaning into the style of music done for widow maker. Which was alex westaway and carpenter brut. That imo, is the cutting edge of synthwave sound. So gunship really needs to hurry up an release their rumored part 2 to unicorn. and make sure its perfecvt, or they will be branded as those first 2 albums. Just like tears for fears. Gunship needs to go back to the drawing board, and rethink what they did with unicorn. All they would have to do, is shift their sound a little bit, and they would be making hits again. The mellow songs, slow down the tempo, make traditional gunship songs, for harder faster songs? Go more into dark synth territory, since thats what faster synthwave should sound like.
