I owe you a debt of gratitude. Just before this video came out. I was in a fight for my life. I had stage 4 head and neck cancer. Your easy and insightful teaching. Allowed me to learn how to paint. I could somewhat draw but wanted to paint what I have witnessed. I am prior Coast Gaurd and sailed the Bearing Sea. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You help me turn off what was and allowed me to just be in the moment. Without a worry. You are in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you and God bless.
I love an appreciate people like you who add something to the world and leave helpful eduication that many will benefit from. After 100 years, your lessons will still be shared and helpful
Dude I'm an artist and your work is literally the only stuff that makes me smile. The simplicity of your explanation of ways to think (perceptive rules) is the magic behind the madness. Wonderful work!
So good. It's great that you explain the principles of the color spectrum, which most artists don't understand. It takes a long time to master color and control over paint... all of the while trying capture an interesting subject matter. Love your videos.
Excellent video. Great job explaining the "whys" and "hows". So many of the tutorials I see on UA-cam are just music playing over the top of the sound. They don't really do much to teach. Great job, Joe!
Just spent the evening having a cracking at this on a small scale. It works really well though I would say I am only a small step in the right direction. It was wiered that suddenly it started looking watery. So a few more goes but a massive thanks Joe for putting it out there. I hope you get the respect you deserve not just as a great painter but an outstanding teacher.
Hi Joe, surfing through the internet, I stumbled onto your lessons of how to paint water, sky, etc. ! Holy Smokes! Thank you so very much. You keep the lessons simple and straight to the point, and they have helped me a great deal. I haven't painted in some months now and I must say, it really has me down. Following your lesson's however, has inspired me to pick up my brush again and start painting, and so I have to say, "I owe you buddy"! It's so good to be back at work again! After all, what's better than creating beautiful works of art. In my book nothing! And so, once again, I thank you for the lessons, the inspiration and the motivation! You've made at least one person very happy in this often crazy world, and for that pal, I sincerely thank you! Keep up the great works, as they bring more joy to the world than you may be aware of. God Bless!
Your explanation for the placement of color was so helpful for me. I've been questioning if I'll be able to navigate a painting from a photo without a tutorial and hearing the logic broken down gives me confidence!
YOUR AMAZING - God blessed you beyond your talents as you share them freely with others. I stumbled across your videos as a novice wannabe painter who loves fire and water. I will have a blast with these wave techniques. thank you.
Avril Retief uncle & Aunty your photo is in You tube is very nice.Iam from India like you very much. Goodbye feedback me chinmoy das silchar assam INDIA Asia
I love the Bob Ross vibe I'm getting from your whole set up- the black background, with the contrasting canvas. XD As for the painting, it is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been wanting to get more in to landscape painting (rather than portraits) , and this has inspired me greatly. :)
joe your my favorite artist to watch, I love that you try your best to explain every detail in contrast to other artist who assume we know what their doing.
Oh my goodness, that's amazing! I was struggling to see how the curved lines would work at first, and then suddenly before my eyes there was an ocean! Beautiful work, thanks for the tips :)
I did a wave when i was 14 in high school. Now im 54 im going to give it another go. I didnt know where to start but your process is brilliant. Thats exactly how im going to do my water!! thank you so much for that info
I feel like it will take me a life time to paint realism art. I do not understand how reflection or shading works when I apply it to my work. this was are nice insight , but something that will not happen over night
its about where your light source is from...ie where the sunlight (for example) is and where the shadows/shade will naturally fall. It just takes practice. The amount of times I have just given up...and dumped the project in the Bin :) I am improving now...Clouds were another problem I had, but they are improving. Love Muraljoes style though. Incredible work
to be able to "see" the shadow, start by drawing stones and mountains!! it really helped me as exercises. Once u get it rolling, everything will go by itself!! U ll start to "see" where the right place and shape of a shadow is. ( an even easier start, is playing with 3 D geometric forms, by drawing them)
No, because it's art. True artist are constantly creating. Sometimes destroying old work in the process. Why would he waste money on a new canvas when he can paint on an old one?
You have a talent for taking what seems like should be a simple thing, that is actually sometimes very difficult, and actually making it a simple thing. Water here, flames in another video. Well done!
This is such a wonderful way to teach how to paint waves. I have been trying various ways unsuccessfully, now thanks to you, hope to get it right. Thank you , it’s lovely.
I got a head ache in the begianing of the VIDEO all that noise and my head spinning was that necessary to start the VIDEO WITH SUCH loud spinning noise
Thank you so much for uploading this tutorial... I've been painting when I was younger... Painting, mostly mural, helped me a lot to survive and graduate high school... Many teachers would have me paint their classroom walls for some amount so that I could buy my food and other expenses... I just hope that other underprivileged but talented young people would watch this kind of videos and get to be more developed, so that it may help them too.
Distractly looking at those beautiful waves, a minute to understand that was actually a painting and now I'm the fastest subscriber in the history of youtube. I'll follow you master !!
Heyo! Long time artist here. I’ve painted more still water however,(thanks to the quick and easy bob Ross wet on wet technique) but just now I am starting to learn waves! And let me tell you, I paint a lot and waves have really got me frustrated. But your tutorial helped me soooo much! My water looks great and it’s only getting better. this is and amazing technique !
this is art. I can't get into modern art. this seemed like it takes actual skill, time and effort rather than just drawing a circle with a black line through the whole thing and then paint splatter chucked on to the canvas. this, this is far better.
Enceladus TheMistGiant Thats vague some art can be a little odd but the thing about art is it is an open minded topic people like van gogh, marcel duchamp and even pablo picasso who influenced expressionism are early stages of what modern art is trying to achieve. Things such as the thick lines are alot more interesting than the pieces id say give van gogh 30 more years and his work would of become just marks and these do take time and thought you just have to be more open minded about it all its evolving to more than just recordings as it dates back to 5000yrs ago its more internal and expressive than just external features nowadays however i have to agree this is lovely to see but its just a tutorial on how to paint waves realistically nowadays this wouldnt be a high priced piece because its just visual not much more to it.
The idea of an artist is how good can he (or she) can take an idea and put in a way we can relate on, be amazed, the closer to the artist original tought we are, the better the artist and that doesnt ncesarely means realism. this isnt jsut with painting, and not even with graphics sometimes (think aboutperspective art and music). The "vogue" (no, improbably wrong. but you get the idea. those overpriced and overthinked pieces of - debatalbe art) art and all that new things rely on exactly the contraire thing. They make the post simply rhing, sometimes is an netirely nonsense, but, suggestion and the human brain per se are really really good at makings thing up, to the point, to find the deep (fry) answers of all on a black dot who is just that: a black dot. you now are not influenced by nothing, so theress only you triying to find a meaning, and that make you the real artist there. Most, nevertheless, are heavily infuenced by notorious artist and critics (and price tags) and thing that only because is there, it means is art...that bothers me, a lot. (sorry for bad english)
dont get me wrong, i do agree that without a backstory, a deeper layer hidden there it would be just a nice drawing...but that "black dot" (for example, not specifically it) is just taked to an extreme.
SaimonVcp completely understood, prices are just how valued the artwork is alot of the time big named artists can sell there slowzier work for big bucks because of the artist behind it and knowing full well the previous works and everything prior to this work how he thinks and approaches his work it is just an honour to have a part of them so sometimes the masterpieces that arent masterpieces can gain fame also even without a backstory!
Being able to just make things look realistic is really not that hard, and people who use that as their measure just don't get what art really is. Besides we've had cameras to make realistic images now for many years, to paint that way is redundant. also you might not realize it but most good abstract artists can do realism, but they're bored by it and have moved on to other things.
I would paint a picture in villager blood with burning houses in the distance and awesome Viking long ships in the waves and some happy little trees on fire !
I think this is the best vid ive seen explainin how to paint waves, im an abstract painter & to me its not easy to do this but watching this.. I tink I can
Its been 43 years. Ive only 2 paintings. I draw and paint my drawing. This 3rd is beach scene and my no experience i didnt start from the back , learned from that mistake. I had a amateur bunch of waves and was happy but they looked like a storm. So its blocked back in and semi trans to see the last as a guide to a better. Another mistake is too small a canvas or in this case 10×14 cardboard. From now on poster size and ive 3 pieces of 60×60 thin ply im backframein and sandin and homemade gesso. Im a landscape and I like blacklight posters and galaxie/ space art. Thankyou man your helpin me ive never painted a beach scene or waves and water and its really turnin out thrilling after you taught me.

Grateful for Joe and his painting videos. Living in his gift. Stay blessed 💯🎨🖼
I've been searching and trying to understand how to paint waves for years this video helped so much ,awesome video
if it took years then u probably searched it in your neighbors trashcan
How artists paint water into their pictures has always fascinated me. You are marvelous many thanks.

I thought so too!
Your explanation for the placement of color was so helpful for me. I've been questioning if I'll be able to navigate a painting from a photo without a tutorial and hearing the logic broken down gives me confidence!

Trees always make things better. They can be sturdy and old or fragile and dead looking and still look complimenting.

Thanks, Joe! First time I'm followed one of your tutorials! You're cool as hell! I'm nervous about trying acrylics. You make it seem less intimidating! The born talent comes first then come practice. I enjoy watching him.
I watched you do it, and yet I still think some form of witchcraft was involved.

Fabulous! Beautiful demonstration of a tricky technique, I will have a try. Thank you so much muraljoe.
are you using acrylic or oil paint?
Acrylic.....
Testing
it looks so easy i wish i was like wow he must be a professional
i dont know what to say
slicerjohn 189 clearly it is acrylic paint since you can't pour oil paint out of a bottle. Watch how he puts more paint tinto the cups.
Each of the three lessons are fabulous. Each could have been a painting all by itself. I am so distressed that you erased such beautiful works just to teach. But your lessons are outstanding.
please why is it no colour in the corner. can you explain
peace out
You are an amazing teacher, and I'm so happy I found you! 💖

You just demonstrated how to paint bloody water. :)
You paved the way for me on painting the sea thank you so much.
This is amazing.
This is the BEST explanation of waves I've ever seen! Thank you!!

WOW! This made my day! I just found your channel and can’t wait to watch the rest of the tutorials. You are a good teacher and have extraordinary skill.

I was scrolling through and it looked like you were looking out the window of a boat! Beautiful!
Only one reason people would give this video a thumbs down. THEY'RE JEALOUS!!
best video I ever watched. Amazing skils, clear explanation .thank you so much
I hope your acrylics are cheap mate, if I would paint with so much color I won't have anything left for food hahaha
Not thinking i'd be worried about that with such a talent ! besides , industrial paint is stupidly cheap !!
Sell amazing paintings and buy food and more acrylic paint with earnings.
This is so awesome, I have been painting lake water and wanted to try ocean water, will give this a shot
next bob ross? :)
You are an amazing artist thank you for sharing your cast knowledge of painting with us. I'm from the school of Bob Ross, so this is next level creativity right here.🖌
I thinks we have to learn definition of colours before start drawing.
I learnt more in 10 minutes watching you than I ever learnt in art class!
Shark attack on the right. Blood in the water.
Thank you for your explanation regarding the colour riles. Makes sense
