The meaning of his speech is clear, despite of all the grammar mistakes. Respect to an old man that never spoke German before training Bayern. That "Strunz" is priceless. Grazie Trap.

Actually he's right in almost everything he says. Especially when he mentions that he played Elber, Jancker and Zickler together and journalists still accused him of fielding a defensive team. I think he was the victim of stereotypes, and this happened to him in Portugal, Austria and Ireland as well. Lazy journalists couldn't get over his Juventus side of the 1970s and 1980s (which indeed was defensive) and repeated the same cliches about Catenaccio all over again.

@@clintstewart5545 Well, the OP is right. Trappatoni was known in the 3rd half of the season in Benfica as "Trapalhoni" (a play on his name with the Portuguese word "Trapalhão", meaning "bungler"). Nobody believed that Benfica could be champion mid season with such unbalanced team, and there were many defeats all season long. Luckily, main opponents were losing games as well. His defensive style was not aprecciated at all.
A fun fact is that he also did while at the club a legendary press conference, on late February. This is what happened:
During the game, he was severely whistled and was shown white handkerchiefs (typical attitude here when fans want the manager out of the club) when Benfica was knockout in Lisbon in UEFA Cup's last 16 against CSKA Moscow (1-3 final, tied 1-1 in the away game), after some controversial defensive substitutions. After the game, an annoyed Trappatoni shouted against critics and press journalists alike and defended out loud the players while punching the press table, saying the team played well and he had nothing to say about the players attitude.
This press conference is highly regarded as the "turn around" of things, as he protected the team, making it more cohesive and fans started to support it no matter what until the very end. Games remained hard to see, to be honest, but the supporters started to believe, and that was the main difference.
Of course in the end he almost did the domestic double, obviously losing the cup final after too many celebrations lol. There's a rumor that he left the club because he didn't think it was possible to do it again next season, but who knows. Trappatoni is respected as he ended an awful period with a limited team, but i wouldn't call him a "hero". It was a tough season. Ups, that was long.

The truth is that Trapattoni arrived in Germany elderly, and had the respect for trying to speak that difficult language. While Michael Schumacher has been in Italy for ten years and has never been able to speak (even badly) Italian, the same thing for many foreign sportsmen in Italy, see Ronaldo, who has been in Italy for years and doesn't say a single word in Italian. Respect for Trapattoni.

Schumi beginned speaking some Italian by the end of his Ferrari stint, he still was not comfortable with it but I clearly remember (ironically...) during his 3 years at Mercedes there were a few times that he replied in Italian to Rai interviewers, and that was years after, so he learnt some

This is passion. When you play for the greatest football club in the world there is no room for error. If players in other teams messed up their coach would pat them on the back and give them a cookie. But here at Bayern we expect more from our players. To mold champions you need to break them down and make them again. You either rise to the occasion like countless legendary Bayern players or you get crushed underneath the boot like Mats hummels. ~RRR

I remember that in the eighties many foreign players played in Italy. People like Matthaus, who spoke ridiculous Italian, then there was Walter Schachner, who spoke Italian like a five-year-old, not to mention Grahme Souness, who could maybe say three words. Then there was Vujadin Boskov, who spoke Italian like a troglodyte, it was rare to find one who spoke fluently, almost impossible. But no Italian insulted them for this, but rather they listened to them respecting them, for the effort of wanting to make themselves understood in the language of that country. Naturally it is difficult to think that a German or an Englishman would do the same, a Latin is more sensitive, a German will always try to make fun of and give less honor to a foreigner. It's genetic.
