Band in a Box can improvise 24h of original Giant Steps lines at 350 bpm since 2007 and still people don't really give a fuck.

I have often used the BIAB soloist to practice comping on piano. I also use it to practice trading fours. AI may be useful for things like that, even if it is less than perfect.

why do we even need this given how much energy it takes?

If it knows every jazz riff ever, it can put together permutations that work. In pretty much the same way predictive text works.

      That’s definitely where it’s heading!

This is like leaps ahead of anything we have ever heard before from a computer. You can sometimes listen to the ai, and tell which album it is copying. For example, there are clear examples of Roni Cuber's baritone sax sound in there, from George's "Uptown" and "Cooking" albums. It has Miles' swing, phrasing, and cadence down. It is not coherent music yet, but holy cow, its getting very close to the peices of language.

I agree, it's locking on to some key musical elements but struggling some putting them together in the right way. Once they get that aspect closer it will be hard to distinguish.

Just yesterday I watched Adam Neely's UA-cam video "Why AI is Doomed to Fail the Musical Turing Test" which convinced me even more that while AI might be able to output high quality Jazz music within the next few years, it will definitely not be able to be musical in the sense of playing Jazz as an interactive process. At least not in the foreseeable near future. Large Language Models work can just interact with human beings on a very formal level. Playful interaction in a band context (i.e. jamming together) is currently not part of this game.

The main question for jazz musicians and their livelihoods is not “can it play exactly like a human?”. That’s essentially achieving true AI and when we have that, we have other major issues lol. The real question is at what point would the majority of listeners not be able to tell the difference. The same way DJs replace many live bands because the audience doesn’t really care about the sound difference and definitely prefer the price difference. For example, AI will make it so much cheaper to produce music that most non-musicians wouldn’t be able to distinguish. I think that’s what will happen in a much more near future.

    My guesses:
    1. Benson? (First thought was Wes but didn't feel the music was very Wessy) 2. Miles. 3. This was just shit AI.

I think Archtop Odyssey is rubbish - honestly is my opinion and not based with any bias against it.…I have to say the whole point of “jazz” is it is somebody’s emotional outlet on an instrument and interaction with an audience etc - and the interpretation of ideas and life and chord changes which will be different choices every time a tune is played - what’s the point if it’s a machine doing it? Are people going to go to clubs to listen to a machine in the corner pretending to be musicians and applaud at the end or cheer for encores and call for another beer etc? …even people visiting nightclubs etc listen to real musicians that have been recorded so that’s a totally different thing to a machine devising “emotions” …..I don’t believe people are going to be fooled but then again I’m an old geezer who likes real people.

Is the emotional content of music so obscure and or user generated that we just don't talk about it in this context?

I agree that a casual listener would never know it was AI. Human musicians are an endangered species. :(

That first AI track "archtop odyssey" doesn't sound anything like Wes. The backing track is way too compressed, processed, and modern sounding. Just awful! To me it sounds like a very bad attempt at emulating Lee Ritenour in the '70's trying to emulate Wes. Yuck!
