Yeah engines aint cheap to build.
    My list was
    Pistons 1200€
    H-beam rods 540€
    Ross damper 800€?
Bearings chain guides seals etc. Est 450€
Machining incl. Boring n honing 6x, polish crank, fit piston rings, decking block and head, valve seals and seats. that was about 1250-1350 in just machine shop.
    Clutch and flywheel 750€
    Upgraded Head bolts 40€
Let's just say i hope this engine will last.

Thats a good price for a full rebuild. If you think about it that engine should last another 10 years thats 350pounds a year. what will the cosworth value be after the engine rebuild and in 10 years. A good investment. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

If I ever managed to source a 950cc Reliant engine I would seriously consider sending it you for a decent once over to make it shine, these were racing versions of the humble 850cc used in my type of three wheeler which is pretty fiesty for such a little engine as I can thrash her close to 100 but at that speed it is terrifying (did on an airfield so no laws broken) but a friend has a Liege 950cc in his three wheeler and that 100cc difference is quite marked but usually the only ones that come up for sale are shagged out. Have enjoyed all your videos and you lot seem to have patience of saints dealing with plonkers lol (I'm not one :D)

Are all 2.0 16valve dohc engines created equally when it comes to the costs for a complete re-build? The reason I ask is firstly that some pedigree engines like the Cosworth, XE and Mitsubishi EVO have parts tax on them, but then on the other hand I bet there's a far greater choice of parts and maybe because the parts are widely available and made in greater numbers maybe that can mean parts prices are lower than for engines where parts are scarce and performance off the shelf bits don't exist? Also would a shop that specialises in say Cosworths and knows them inside and out be likely to do them cheaper than an engine they've never really worked on, or does a decent engine shop not get fazed by the uncommon or engines outside their normal day-day business?

  • @johndoornaert1127

I think that quite cheap in either cases. People don't realize the attentions and the time that it takes to build a proper engine. They think that it's just a matter of putting parts together. They forget the cleaning, the inspection, the measurements, ajusting the cr, flow bench the port, egalized the chamber's volume, checking the lift, mooding the orginal bad designs, ect. Parts always cost more that the labour. And the quality of the after market parts is sometime just awful. It is all this kind of little details take a lot of time and the end result is always hidden in them.

£4200 inclusive for a standard engine , add a upgraded turbo and injectors and take it out then in and BBR used to charge £10,000 25 years ago
If the turbo was £2000 and injectors £600 I reckon this price would still be £3000 less than they charged and I bet Godfrey would want £20,000.

Finally an honorable skilled engine builder that isn’t going to charge you £75,000 pounds like Julian Godfrey does for a 600 plus HP YB engine which is laughable nonsense.
£3500 pounds to rebuild a Cosworth YB engine to better than stock specifications and aboat £6800 for a 600 hp bottom end not including the turbo and ECU. Let’s say additional €4000 or less for a larger turbo and management system to get anywhere from 500 hp to 600 hp. So the total is anywhere from £11,000 to £12,000 pounds or lower.
If you don’t have the engine add a used donor used engine from I’m guessing $3000. So how can these these other YB engine builders charge £25,000 to £35,000 or more per build? 😮In Canada or the US it’s easy to get 600 hp from a V6 or a V-8 Ford for anywhere from $10,000-$15,000 and don’t forget there are additional four cylinders of material on these V8 engines compared to a four-cylinder.

I remember as well and labor cost was free as with a few friends and a garage we could put together a blue printed engine (machining was done elsewhere) in a week end. That was after geting all the bits, these days it prices are bad enough but now with shipping hikes some stuff is starting to go through the roof. Imagine buying a $6 dollar part and being charged $25 to 60 in shipping alone. Nasty but thanks it's brought back some memories of a good time (oh the build was also fueled on beer).

Do you ever use the cut ring headgaskets on these? (they are like a standard gasket, but instead of a convential fire ring, they have a stainless steel ring that sits inbetween the lip of the gasket and the bore and bites into the head when tightened down like an oring, but without requiring machining) I think Athena makes the majority of them. I know a guy who specialises in turbo V8s , LSes etc and he actually recommends these for the majority of the turbo builds he does, unless its all out race promod stuff over 1200hp

Also recommend if your going to race it, it probably should have all new parts! Steve Morris in the US has a great saying & it’s 100% correct! If it moves, it will break! You probably should have also mentioned that especially after this Covid bullshit💩💩💩💩 parts price have only gone up! If you could even get them! My boss has around 10 engines in the build room, where just about everything is done, except there are tons of back ordered parts 🙄🙄🙄🙄! We all know to recon a usable head is a good £400- £600 notes thats strip chen clean pressure check remove old guides put new guides in the clean and seat all the valves and check the heights and a skim .... the list goes on .... and was that a T34 on that engine there rocking horse poo now and treble the price if u can find one .... in a word your far to cheep
