- Homes built pre 1970 used Field Tile for Foundation Drainage. This pipe is usually cemnet or ceramic and came in 1 foot sections that was butted together and laid along the footer.
Take a look at what it looks like after 30 or 40 years. It is totally full of dirt and needs to be replace.
This is not an easy Do it Yourself project but it can be done if you have a few friends willing to work for a back yard cook out!

Hey Chuck , Long time viewer love the channel you've helped me out quite a bit, can you suggest a good website to get waterproofing supplies for the basement my local home stores don't really have a lot black membrane the coding you just put on that exterior wall basically all the Home Depots in lows around here have is hydraulic cement waterpro
need the other things
1.) Dig the dirt.
2.) Grind or power wash the wall and let it dry.
3.) Put the glue or prime the wall.
4.) Put the blue skin over.
5.) The delta protection.
6.) Change your drainage system
A.) Take old drainage out.
B.) Level with gravel, remember to slope it a bit to the storm water system.
C.) Put a 10" to a 12" of gravel on top and then the fabric to protect clogging you drainage system.
7.) Back fill and compact the soil with a light compactor for 2 feet first to avoid damaging the whipping tile.
8.) Now you can back fill the rest and use a heavy compacter.

Yo chuck, what product did you use to seal the foundation wall?
Most important part make sure to go below the footer will call footing or water will still get into basement.Make sure to tamp the ground after back fill , or you will go back and add more dirt later.

they are terracada pipe they stoped using during the 60s .just want you guys to know Waterproofing is a hard dirty job .an people that do this job for more than 20 + years usually end up dieing if its not from drug addiction its from cancer as the constant breathing of concrete dust , asbestos , mold .and pvc glue from discharge line . good luck my dude. coming from a fellow waterproofer.

Don't know if anyone will answer this. Or Ballentine floods and we are looking to have the outside waterproofed vs. Inside pressure release. Any pros and cons on both? Also where does that corrugated pipe go to? 2 quotes if had said they don't put pipe down there after waterproofing but one guy did say he'd do it if i wanted it that way but I'm wondering where the pipe is supposed to take the water. We have a basement and not just a crawl space so pretty down low. Thank you for anyone who answers

I understand how its supposed to work but I have dug up many systems like this where it has slowly clogged with fine particle. Remember its just a filter, it filters out large particles and allows tiny particles which actually resist drainage more than larger particles...I'm in the north east and we get rain that lasts for over a week sometimes, channeling the water away from any structure before it gets underground is always the best solution.
What about ground water? I'm in Maine and can't seem to get it under control without basement leaks. Got gutters regraded etc and there is still a lot of moisture in my blocks and seepage with heavy rains. Was quoted 10k today for French drain feel it's a waste of money and will clog especially since we have lots of clay here around the foundation. I might just sign up section by section myself and seal any cracks then tar it..
I'm curious if there would be any benefit of putting a layer of sand on top of landscape fabric. it's more coarse than dirt and I would think would help prolong clogging of landscape fabric. any thoughts?

What’s going to prevent dirt from migrating into the pipe from the side? You’ve put the fabric on top but there was nothing on the side.
The stone won't get clogged because it's wrapped with filter fabric. Same with the pipe. It is surrounded by that stone and may have its own filter sock.

Hi Chuck, there is an in-ground swimming pool about 15 feet from one side of the home. Do you think an excavator should/could be used to dig down to the footer?

if yur soil drains well this will work but if u have clay or silt the water will collect in the processed stone and just sit there. curtain drains with some kind of culvert or sloped channel to draw water away from the foundation is the best method. they simply replaced an old pipe for a new one, this new pipe will clog in a few years... the sealant was the only useful addition.
depends how severe your problem is . what actions you want to take towards them, how much you want done exactly. many many many variables. Id have to know what your problem is exactly to give you an estimation. or if you dont have any problems and youre just doing it to be safe then the variables would be. If you have a basement or not and how deep we'd have to dig. How hard the digging is, or if we find a problem you didnt know about. or if theres troubles digging where we're digging etc

why not hire a little hand compactor and compact with layers to try and match the compaction of the surrounding ground conditions.
I have a 1970 house which has a large cement patio originally butted up against the house. There is a 3-4 inch crack inbetween now. I think it leaked through the ceiling in the basement, and I think it caused water to rise up to the drywall inside the house. I have black mold on the frame of my house there. What on earth can I do. Common sense was not issued out much back then.
Would just adding a shitload of gravel instead of throwing the dirt back in not be more effective?
The pipe should be at the very bottom, by adding gravel you create a layer that won't drain.

In the U.S., builders are now using a three-part solution. First, a coating of rubber, tar, or latex directly on the foundation. Second, a "wrap" made of plastic, with dimples that allow any water to drain down, with gravity. Third, a pipe at the bottom, with many holes, surrounded by gravel, as shown in this video.

while concreeting the bottom floor of the water tank i have used DR.FIX it waterproofing compound in concreting the floor.even the the seapage is comming from bottom of floor.will you let us know the remedy for this pl.
Will this same technique work for an exterior wall without a basement? If so how far down do I need to dig? It is a small wall but every time it rains we have water that floods the room. It was originally a carport so the floor is concrete. Is it possible for me to do this as a DIY project. Thank you

Not really sure how it's coming in. The room was built from an existing carport so it's ground level.

Always slope away from the house is key in all circumstances. Even better yet since knowing you did apply foundation coating & sealer, where in the world is your blue skin membrane & foundation waterproofing dimpled membrane? It's a must to install both onto the wall once your foundation coating & sealer is applied. And your weeping-tile pipe should be sleeved already with filter-cloth fabric & laid flush with the basement footing and slope down. There should be 8 inches of 3/4 crushed limestone before laying your weeping-tile pipe & then another 2 inch layer of 3/4 crushed limestone above & then you lay a double layer of filter-cloth and finally you back-fill with your dirt/topsoil! Can I be anymore clear? Do it right, or don't do it at all! START RIGHT!! FINISH RIGHT!!

Is the top of weeping tile pipe flush with the top or bottom of the footer?
this is waterproofing done wrong lol. 1 you dig up 5 inches below footing for weeping tile, 2 you clean up the wall and open up any cracks found with grinder and fill them with hydraulic cement, 3 you apply aqua block not that cheap tar there using, 4 you install Delta MS drainage membrane on the wall 4 inches above soil level and make sure you put it over the footing, 5 you lay 4 inch weeping tile and make sure its 1 inch below footing, 6 you fill 3/4 of a foot of gravel, 7 install delta strip over membrane and then backfill.

I say powerwash first, coat all the mortar joints with hydraulic plug , then coat with waterproofer, then foundation coat, then insulate it with blueboard..then foundation again..then do your style..
and no dirt over top ---all the way with gravel-- a colored gravel the last foot if customer wants ---NO WAY WATER IS GETTING THROUGH 3 FOOT OF GRAVEL!!!!!

Why people are not built on concrete bases?
Filter fabric is not the same as landscape fabric. 9 times out of 10, a professional engineer will spec a stone perimeter along the wall wrapped in filter fabric with a drainage pipe at the bottom wrapped in a filter sock. Of course, any drainage company would recommend sloping the grade away from the building, but I wouldn't have much faith in the liquid membrane. I would go with a bituthene membrane and ductboard between the membrane and stone.

Since your already digging a deep trench to do this anyway, why wouldn’t you dig deep enough to the bottom of your foundation?? It only makes sense. Why only do a 1/3 or half of the foundation? If I had to do that... I’d go all the way to the bottom.
Why not just grade the dirt around the house so water runs away from the house?
black corrugated pipes, big NO!, they do not convey water as smooth wall pipes..
footing is still below pipe- capillary forces still will suck water into concrete...

@@appledrains you put the gravel directly on the soil. it may take several years, but it will eventually fail. Why would you not out seperation fabric on the bottom? You put it over the top. It shoul be completely surrounded

to be honest with everyone even though he has installed a new perferated tile next to the footer water is what destroys your foundation i know this method to be only minimally effective if the tile next to your footer is not tied into a drain line such as a hill, ditch if the water tabe does not rise to a level higher than to line draining to or a storm drain these tiles are known to hold water if you think about water only being pressure it will fight to seek a weak point now this footer tile is a weak point most cases your footer is very close to your water table and this may keep water off the foundation where the wall meets the footer but if no drainage is available then water seeking this area especially after the tile is full and has brought water to the area and dirt is a filter in a way so if you use clay to backfill then the water gathered will take longer to get out of this tile the wall needs to be dug down line installed only if drainage is available or if old lines have lines called bleeder tiles that tie into basement on inside peremeter drains need to be installed inside of home under basement floor next to the footer only use corrugated perferated pipe with sump as discharge. outside should be filled with gravel up to about a foot and a half of dirt from surface with a channeled system installed around home to a french drain at a foot an a half depth from surface using mastic and a visqueen membrane DO NOT USE DRYLOCK IF FOUNDATION IS CONCRETE BLOCK ONLY USE AS COSMETIC FIX FOR NON FLUSH WALLS SUCH AS LIMESTONE FLAGSTON COBBLESTONE ECT.

The waterproofing application shown will fail.This is a poor installation. The holes should be on top and not the bottom. The drain acts the same as a gutter. You want the horizontal flow of water leaving the foundation to travel in the linear bottom of the drain.
Also, the wall has to be washed, scraped, and any cracks sealed before applying coats, with horizontal brush strokes on the first coat and finishing with vertical brush strokes on the final coat.
I will add that the gravel on the bottom is working against a proper instillation. The water needs to flow in the bottom of the drain and not below it.
I think it should be noted for clarity that the hole location is reflective of the application. In a field line application, your objective is to dicipate the liquid across a broad area. For a basement scenario, we want to direct the water away from the base as quickly as possible.
My guess? The guy installs septic tanks and took on these projects thinking he could apply the same mechanics.

The whole job was botched including planting a scrub tight against the foundation. Obviously he doesn't know anything about drainage or landscaping.

So many things wrong in this video. Tar onto the brick is embarrassing. Grade is way too high as per building code. Plants are too close to home. Big "O" was used for drain tile. Filter fabric will clog. Very little stone put back. No damproofing membranes used. No Delta MS. Must be a SHORT warranty you offer!
Oh, and this video shows damproofing. Not waterproofing.

manuel a that should work. make sure to inspect the wall and look for cracks, grout and patch any voids before you seal it. make sure you have a slope away from the foundation wall.
