  • is the source recognizable? I may do more 'Octatrack bootlegs' in the future if I can successfully obscure their origins. There are certainly better tools for this purpose, but the Sony PCM-D100 does have a customizable EQ along with speed and pitch controls. Recorded directly from Octatrack main outs, with post-production compression, EQ, and limiting applied.

    I like this track a lot! Really nice atmosphere in this one. Of course I tried to identify the source material, but couldn't. I think it could spotted, if one is familiar with the source material. As always.

      thank you! it's not an obscure source, but it isn't something I'd expect most people who watch my videos to know by heart. It has also been abstracted enough that even someone intimately familiar with the source may not be able to link them together - it's difficult for me and I even know the exact ingredients! This is the second version I did though, the first version was much more identifiable as it was not as extensively re-harmonized. If I try this approach again maybe I'll increase the challenge by working with current/recent pop hits :D

    Ooh! I’ve been haunting Otatrack video’s quite long enough.
    I like the track and your overly sophisticated approach to a randomly generated track. I like that you can discover approaches to creating a song in ways you wouldn’t otherwise realize using other software or devices.
    Been messing with looped trigs and sweeping the end point to speed up the loop and get that mangled buzz effect and sounding all autechre/glitchy a bit messing around lately on the Digitakt myself.
    But I keep watching all these octatrack video’s and I keep thinking I wish I had this or that feature, blending two tracks seamlessly with the BPM automatically matched, all of my 60+gigs of music material in one box... The GAS has started to hit pretty hard. I think I may just get one and keep my Digitakt too.
    It’s a lot of fun and if I get stuck anywhere with the Octa then I can always go to the takt until I get it figured out.

    • @maxmarco
      @maxmarco  4 роки тому +1

      thank you! To be perfectly pedantic there's absolutely nothing about this recording that's random in any way and it is completely deterministic - I'm not using any form of probability or randomness as there are no random LFOs and there are no probabilistic conditional triggers
      timestretch on OT is one of the weaker features
      imo OT needs a lot of focus and dedication to really make using it worth it - took me at least 2 years before I started giving it the kind of time and attention it requires

    • @ubiquitousreverser
      @ubiquitousreverser 4 роки тому

      max marco Oh my bad, I really didn’t read all
      Of the captions, but it is cool how you can have a song so planned out in such detail if you want to.
      I think the feature’s I look too are more with handling larger files, playing back whole tracks and being able to crossfade between them, where you could create or perform change ups on the DT but you’d have to keep all the tracks in a single project for a set to keep the beat going as you can’t jump to a different project w/out stopping the track.
      I know the time stretch is just fair but it can do a lot of things to make mixing things and getting parts sliced, so far as giving me more overall production handling and performing but it is it’s own thing and I’ve enjoyed just exploring the DT in parts so I just figure I’ll have that many more parts to venture into whenever.

    Hi Max, How would you connect to the Sony PCM-D100 to record music from a synth or sequencer, without xlr or 1/4 inputs (on the D100)? Thank you!

    • @Cericle
      @Cericle 3 роки тому +1

      quick web search on the sony site revealed this: "Line Input (Analogue)
      (Stereo Mini Jack) Input impedance: 22k ohm; Minimum input level: 450mV; Rated input level: 2.0V" looks like there's a dual 1/4" TS cable from the octatrack output merged to TRS 1/8" input to the recorder

    Are you still using the Sony PCM-D100? I was wondering how you’d rate this in terms of sampling wav/mp3 files into a drum machine? Did you find any limitations? The customizable EQ, playback speed and pitch controls sound like good features. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

    I'm a little confused. Are you recording INTO the Sony or sampling directly FROM the Sony into the OT and then resampling live? The latter sounds like a really cool idea. I'm looking to get another OT (sold mine a bit ago) and do something similar by feeding the OT live stuff from my iPad and then resampling and such like you've done here.

    • @maxmarco
      @maxmarco  4 роки тому

      the latter - I'm using the Sony for audio playback, and its audio output is being processed and re-sampled by the Octatrack. The output of the Octatrack is being recorded by my DAW

    (How) would this work with a nicer external reverb? Something like a Flint or a BAM? I really can't stand using the internal verbs myself, but there might be enough routing trickery involved here which makes it necessary to use them instead of something "outboard"?

    Wow! I've never seen anyone use the OT like this. I had never thought of this type of advanced re-sampling. Thank you for spelling it all out. I learned a lot from this. So, are there a bunch of different trigs on each sampling track that keep getting re-triggered over and over? What record setting is it on (One? One2?).

    • @maxmarco
      @maxmarco  4 роки тому

      'ONE' and 'ONE2' settings only have to do with triggering sampling manually or via MIDI - in this piece I'm only using standard recorder trigs

    Can you please help me? Or point me to a video of your that can...please and thank you. OCTATRACK. I have an Octatrack. The Octa is a slave to midi clock coming from Novation Mono Circuit. I want to send midi clock(thru technically) AND NOTES to a MOOG Mother 32. What settings do I need on OCTATRACK? I think I am not understanding something with AUDIO vs MIDI channels and how they are related when it comes to sequencing or midi out to another piece of gear. I only sometimes get midi out. What is the system I am not getting with this? I have no issues with Dgtone/Takt understanding it, but I realize the OCTA is its own thing. THANKS SO MUCH!

    • @maxmarco
      @maxmarco  4 роки тому

      hard to say - MIDI troubleshooting always involves simplifying your setup until you can isolate the configuration issue - maybe just connect the Moog to the OT directly and see what's going on there - start a fresh project, etc. Most important thing to know about Octatrack MIDI implementation that tends to trip people up is that by default the audio tracks are assigned to send/receive on MIDI channels 1-8

      You rock bro! (No patronizing lol)

    • @Spherical_El
      @Spherical_El 4 роки тому +1

      Hi Rushtik
      So you have the moog fed midi from the thru socket of OT?
      this is simplest and feeds clock from circuit to both moog & OT. it leaves OT midi out the equation and notes come from circuit into moog. Not the most flexible but then all you have to think about is audio paths. I would have both machines hitting OT ready to sample or pass thru the OT mixer direct. Get you use to audio first. Leave OT midi alone for a bit. Then progress to using midi out of OT into both other synths later if needed, using ot midi to trigger notes on moog. Also then OT would be master of sync.
      Remember midi and audio are completely different tracks and machines in the OT. Just coz it's there you don't have to use it (midi).
      OT gets complicated quick with unnecessary slow down when elements are added. That's why DT & DN are good for their simplicity..

      Spherical I appreciate the time you took to respond and it was very helpful. I actually have the Mother 32/DFAM audio going thru the Digitone in order to capitalize on its FX. As for MIdI, I am just doing the clock out of the Octatrack into the mother but have Monostation CV/Gate/Pitch into Mother and using 3rd mod sequencer for mother while maintaining audio from channels 1 and 2. So one question, I notice on Octatrack some audio tracks where I have a sample /loop triggered, I need to hit the (9) and that’s when Track 1 loop audio is heard. What is the setting or where is it located that determines the start of a track sample trigger play back for that feature so I can enable it on other tracks? I think I have enabled something I don’t know what....lol...yeah and I have all audio of hardware into Octa and then that can go to interface into IPad or Mac for recording performances.
      Appreciate your help. Octrack is a bugger for sure.

      Hi Rustik.
      So it seems your DT plus other instruments audio is jacked into OT and you have a thru machine on OTs track 1?
      Assuming correct you can just lay a trig on track 1 step 1 with hold set to full (inf) in the Amp page. This opens up the audio gate just like hitting 9 on the keys.
      ..But you can free up that audio track by hitting the mixer button and turning up direct (DIR) control for input AB with knob b.
      You lose the track fx from track 1 but can still use master track fx on track 8 if you've set up OT this way (in the control menu).
