should the melody be not loud enough in hip hop ? you said only vocals, kick, bass and snare.

Everyone will have their sound aesthetic, which is why certain engineers are going to be sought after for how they balance instruments and decisions they make. But in general, every general has common practices with the balance of instruments and the type of instruments they use.
Different eras of hip hop: boom bap to trap, will balance their sounds a bit differently, but overall the drums and bass are the sounds the peak the loudest. So for the most I tend to work on, I start with those four and figure out how I want them to balance while getting the LUFS that I want to achieve. Then I bring everything else in. The melody will be loud, but in general it won't be as loud in terms of peak volume as drums because drums are very fast and need to punch hard, where melody is general longer noted and will be perceived louder at lower volumes

@@MusicByDarcy should LuFS not be set at the mastering stage ?

@@zian3694 LUFS are a mastering measurement, but the loudness of your master is dependent on the balance of your mix. If you can't easily achieve -9 LUFS like this, it's not very likely the mastering engineer will be able to hit it without some negative compromise (distortion, pumping issues, feeling flattened). If you can get your mix to be loud, the mastering engineer will produce a far better master. In short, your mix is the foundation, it's pretty much 90% of how the record will sound.

@@MusicByDarcy then what's the point of having a headroom in mixes for master ? having headroom doesn't mean that you should have a low loudness level in your mix so that mastering engineer have the space to make it loud enough ? I have seen people dealing with the lufs in mastering stage that is the main doubt .

@@zian3694 I still have headroom. You look at the submix and main track outs you will notice there is a difference. Guys I can do a follow up focusing on that aspect. It’s about testing and ensuring that your balance holds up.
You can have headroom and the mastering engineer can’t get it loud. If for instance your kick is very loud and your vocals are quieter, your submix could still be -3db, but to get a louder master, you may have to heavily limit the track which will make things less dynamic and more flat.
