Rob, your lessons are some of the best I've ever seen (and I've been playing for 62 years). The way you explain and demonstrate what you're trying to teach gets straight to the heart and soul of drumming. Although I'm long in the tooth with all of this, I never stop wanting to learn and improve my skills. I look forward to many more of your videos and can't wait to practice what you have to offer. My deepest thanks for your taking the time and effort to share the awesome talent, skills and teaching methodology you possess. I'm glad I found you, and so is my son. He also plays.
Can’t go a day without some time with my practice pad! I genuinely enjoy rudiment practice and the effect it has on my playing is immense. Solid advice once again Rob!
Super super video.........never used to practice rudiments.......but for the last few years it’s been non-stop........the best thing is when other musicians comment on my drumming.......that just sealed it for me.......and my hands feel loose & everything feels great 👍 more power to ya Rob
Starting to use a practice pad to practice rudiments most days was the single greatest thing I did for my drumming, closely followed by watching and listening to great channels like this one. You're the man Rob, I'm forever in gratitude to you brother.
I actually found practicing to be very enjoyable. And: creative, even when technically I'm just playing the same pattern over and over again. For example, I start a paradiddlediddle with the hands, shift it to a paradiddlediddle between right hand and right foot, then to both feet, then left foot and left hand, then back to both hands. Then in reverse. Not only it trains singles and doubles at the same time, but also trains transitions between limbs. The 'creative' part is the change in instrumentation, it might bring you to new ideas for fills and grooves. E.g. I was practicing patterns between hands and feet to up my double kick playing. Very simple: L foot, R foot, L foot, R foot, L hand, R hand (I'm leading left). Then I put my left foot on the hihat pedal instead, and - what a change in dynamics! Acoustically the second and fourth note (right kick) became accented, the hihat became sort of a lead-in for the kick. Two hands on the snare, added a little swing, and... viola, a pretty fat groove was born. Just by practicing a bland pattern. Sorry for blabbering away here 😊
Ive been playing for 30+ years and never did the rudiments thing. So I started over after 30 years of semi pro playing. Best thing I ever did. Within 3 weeks my band was commenting that it was like playing with a different drummer.......... I can't stress enough kids............. The basics are key !!! Keep up the good work Rob love your videos.
Great video! There are very few drummers that I know that practice rudiments. Rudiments to me is like going to the gym, it sucks at first but once you see progress it actually gets addicting. Regularly practicing rudiments will set you apart. I get a lot of compliments on how relaxed and easily I play the drums. I will definitely show my friends this vid
I loveeeee this guy..been practicing for 2 mnths.im totally right handed ..i can now feel my left hand a little..( it use to feel numb)..his teachings are great
Take Robs advice....don’t take 30 years to get to where Iam...I play a lot and I do well but it’s taken me 30 years to get to where iam and it didnot have to be this way ...great advice from mr rob beat down brown...all you guys listen to this man...Jim Hammond Louisiana..🇺🇸
This is one of Rob's BEST and Most Important Videos!!! Take everything he says on this subject as GOSPEL. Been playing on and off for 30+ years and I try spend around 20 minutes daily on 4 rudiments, single stroke, double stroke, single and double paradiddles. It's also a great warm up before you get on the kit. Adding double strokes, ghost notes, etc. to single stroke rolls will make your fills SO much more interesting and musical. So when you're sitting on your ass watchin' the boob tube mute those adverts and get out your practice pad. You'll be glad you did. To Rob - took your advice and found a 17'" Dark Energy Crash - love it, really compliments my 16" Modern Essentials crash. Also found my perfect ride - 20" Dark Energy Mk.1.
Spot on & well done! Practicing rudiments on my kit has greatly improved all aspects of my drumming. Rudiments are great for creating drum fills too! The paradiddle is 8 notes, 2 bars of 4/4 time, that can be orchestrated in a variety of ways across your drums & cymbals. If you ever get bored with rudiments, change the accent pattern, invert it, collapse it, expand it, build on it. So many pro drummers in all music styles employ rudiments creatively.
Did the year of the hands, in fact still busy, mine only began in March. Couldn't agree more. Especially the confidence it gives you. That snare sounds awesome.!
I always start out my practicing rudiments ,straight roll, long roll or doubles, paradiddles, 5,6,7,9 rolls, flams by the time im done my hands are ready for the set, and it does intensify your playing ,went to a Joe Morrello clinic in sixties, late sixties , and even got to meet Buddy Rich and he learned all his by listening to other drummers , if all your students are taking heed to your lessons like i do ,they will in fact GET BETTER ,CAUSE I AM, THANKS ROB!!!!
Rob - so true. I'm a drum corps snare drummer and rudiments are so key to being a good, musical player with chops. The basics, baby. Gotta have a sound foundation! Nice video, well done!
Fun to watch, Amazing rob your lessons and skills, And teaching are so very helpful, One of the best drum teacher I’ve seen on the tube, Thx bro for sharing and posting!
I use my rudiments as a warm up everyday ,starting out with straight roll and trplets then doubles ,then 5 stroke roll followed by 6 stroke, then paradiddles and paradiddle diddle, by then im ready for a good practice, im not professional drummer but just like what i sound like after a hour or two work out.So Rob its obvious it works cause of the way you sound too. Everyday since i retired.
me, as self-teaching-drummer, have been thinking how would get better at drums and eventually thinks to be the best drummer or musician(I know theres not anyone who is “the best” musician they all are great in the way they exist)couldnt get the meaning of “why I practice?” and I finally got that! its been like 3 or 4 years thinking of it, but Im completely ready to go. this video is my last peace of my puzzle. Thank you for this. this made my theory complete.Imma go and do practice!
So I went to buy a practice pad today just because of this video! I've never fully understood why their so important. And now i'm like its so obvious! Thanks Rob your awesome!
Just found your videos the other night, but really enjoying them! I’ve been playing drums for a little over a year now. Funny I found this video because today I found a website that teaches 40 rudiments with videos!! It’s kind of overwhelming at first knowing where to start but I know it will make me a better drummer. Thank you for your content, keep up the good work. God bless.
Really happy you're hitting us with some other content to compliment the year of the solo...couldn't get enough of the year of the hands, so I really liked this vid...I was the guy who only practised songs and in a band, so the year of the hands was huge for me, and it really works haha Nice solo near the end of the vid too Rob! 🤘
Rob, I liked that BD/HH ostinato you used on the last demonstration. If you haven't done one already, can you address ways in which we can get away from a four-on-the-floor bass drum rut when soloing/improvising? Ostinatos certainly work but it's cool to drop the BD in randomly and in a musical way with the hands - almost like a third hand. Lately, I've been accenting certain notes with the bass drum while practicing rudiments with the hands, as well dropping the BD in between the notes as a way to break that bass drum free. Thx!
Hey guys, you’re supposed to look at the hands not the (wing)nuts ! But seriously, I started rudiments about 6 months ago after playing on the kit about year and a half. And Rob is right: the rudiment training makes my playing on the kit a lot smoother, especially the dynamics (ghostnotes).
Thanks bro! I have watched maybe half a dozen times. Why, because like you say bro rudiments are music with out them my sticking and fluidity around my kit would not sound like music.
Great video Rob, just got my butt into rudiment action again.😎 . Just wondering that last ostinato that you were soloing over sounded great and sorta straight forward. Could you do a lesson on some simple soloing ostinato’s - looks like they would be good for independence as well as creativity. Many thanks.
It feels great to freshen up on rudiments. Man It's good to see that ole drum stick is hanging in there Rob. Nicey explained video👍🥁#loosehands👐 solo time
If you practice rudiments you'll suddenly find that they come out on their own while you're playing in a song. I noticed this back when I first started, suddenly I did a fill or something and noticed I was playing things from the rudiments automatically without thinking and I got much better quickly. Especially the flams. They are important.
I've recently subscribed to your channel man, you completely rock. I'd love to develop my hands control so i usually practice 5 different exercises, going from 80 bmps to 110. Is there any rutin or tips you can give me? Love your work, thanks a lot for your time and your knowledge, people like you make me wanna keep working and improving to make beautiful things. Saludos desde España, cheers
DaYuMm ...Rob!! I feel ya!! Love it!! Im wit ya!! You got me here to this point ...thank you ...hecks yeah I'm following!! Tryin lol!! But I feel ya bud!! Thank you darn big time again!!! You getting me there!! Owe ya everything!!! 🙏🙏👊🤝 I'm always on my pad! Goes where I go!! Sweet GrOOVin' my man!!! 👍✌️eat beats sleep repeat🤘
I never practiced rudiments properly for a good 5 years. I pretty much stagnated as a drummer for that entire time. I taught myself to read music and began practicing rudiments more (though still not as much as I should) but I feel that I've improved more as a drummer in the past year or 2 than I had over the entire time I had been drumming prior to that. The six stroke roll has become a personal favourite of mine both to practice and to use on the kit.
Wow! Man, can we have that 2:20 lick transcription, please? Please-please-please, mate! It's so cool!.

Clay LaHatte NOPE 👌🏽🙂
Fun to watch, Amazing rob your lessons and skills, And teaching are so very helpful, One of the best drum teacher I’ve seen on the tube, Thx bro for sharing and posting!
Rudiments are the basis of snare drum playing. Thanks for helping us all along the way, Rob.
Thanks for a great one man!
Thanks for dropping knowledge uncle rob!
Wow, Rob. Awesome.
Great video Rob! I’m a little too slow with rudiments and can’t get all the way kind of difficult. Love to play but hard to do basics rudiments
You sir.. are my favorite instructor. You're humble and lay out the facts in a way that's easy to understand. Thanks for all of your videos sir.
Thanks much, man 🙂👊🏽
Once again you hit the nail on the head Rob. Algebra and Rudiments are my most hated things lol
Great video Rob
Ok, I'm convinced, also that solo was sweet, nicely done 💪

Hoping I can eventually play these half as well as you!
Great video Rob, just got my butt into rudiment action again.😎 . Just wondering that last ostinato that you were soloing over sounded great and sorta straight forward.

Thanks Beatdown 🥁 🇦🇺 would love to see you teach some of Phil Rudd

love it ... keep em coming
It feels great to freshen up on rudiments. Man It's good to see that ole drum stick is hanging in there Rob. Nicey explained video👍🥁#loosehands👐 solo time
I'm already on board with rudiments, but I watched this to help me justify it to my students. :D

I need to learn how to play with my fingers
When your Fluid you can do it!!!!!!
Good stuff...peace !
Your drums sound extra tasty today.
And how do you NOT have 5 million subs, Rob? It’s ridiculous.
I’m workin on it, man 😓🙂
Great !
What about practicing the rudiments with the feet?
I've recently subscribed to your channel man, you completely rock.

Oh that snare Rob ..it's sweet man
Ain’t it??! 😍
Thanks Rob... I like the way you teach... Really simple and to the point. Keep it up Brother you have now become my Obi wan...
How often are you supposed to change your drum heads?
Yes practicing does help with ur hands I can tell the difference!!
Rob Brown. Drummer ans Slap Fighter! :-)
I wish I hadn't neglected rudiments for so many years. It really does make things easier and more musical!
Rob you should do a rip on drumeo.
Rudiments rule the drums.Rob rules the kit.
I genuinely enjoy practicing nothing but rudiments lol
Legit made a schedule for practicing rudiments might help others. 3 times a week 5 minutes on those day or 10 minutes if you are less busy.
Just awesome!!!! :)
Rob, what stacker are you using???
DaYuMm ...Rob!! I feel ya!! Love it!! Im wit ya!! You got me here to this point ...thank you ...hecks yeah I'm following!! Tryin lol!! But I feel ya bud!! Thank you darn big time again!!! I LOVE YOU!!
Make it look too easy...lol...you had me at helloadiddle.
Let's go practice the rudiments!
After I got into marching percussion all I do is rudimentary stuff😂
I’m ready to take on some suckas in a slap fight. Thanks Beatdown!
I like to rudiment
Rudiments are really important I don't joke with my rudiments😉
I have books of rudiments and what's missing is what the f is the reason for studying it.
Playing for 28 years and only now getting into proper rudiment routines. How I wasted those years!
But I just sat down to do rudiments lol
I never practiced rudiments properly for a good 5 years. I pretty much stagnated as a drummer for that entire time. I taught myself to read music and began practicing rudiments more (though still not as much as I should) but I feel that I've improved more as a drummer in the past year or 2 than I had over the entire time I had been drumming prior to that. Rudiments are important to drummers for the same reason atoms are important to chemists.
AMEN . They don't call them Rudiments for nothing . ;-)
This guy's playing is so tasty...!
