I primarily play miniature wargames, where building an army based on points is overwhelmingly the most popular way to play. I'm don't think many ASL players use the Chapter H method of creating games other than myself. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen an ASL scenario where each side spends points to make an entire army. That's what I'm used to doing.
With so many scenarios available (over 7000 including third party), DYO probably isn't played often. But all HASL campaign games have a replenishment group mechanic that allows points to be spent to buy reinforcements. Some scenarios have them too.
Played most of SL, played the full set of ASL on release. I include the gamettes in SL. When it released I loved ASL, but as time passes I find the rules absolutely crush the flow of the game. For example, look at all the times ASLA and others have to stop and poke around for rules. SL much easier to digest and play. And if you really want to know: Up Front crushes them all.
Therein lies the problem. This game takes a loooong time to play. Way too many of the published scenarios are far too large. I wish there were more simple ones like The Guards Counter Attack.
I track my scenarios. Going back to 2013, I've played about 600 scenarios.
I was quite surprised to see these results. At 11-50 and with 6000+ scenarios available, I thought I'd be an outlier. 😄
That's more scenarios than players!

Newer scenarios are much shorter than the originals were usually 10-12 turns.
