I lived in Okayama from 2002-2004. One of my favorite cities on the planet: peaceful, medium sized city, castles and gardens, a canal running through the middle (nishigawa), lively night life especially near the station, first rate shopping (Aeon) and eating establishments. Then, of course, there's the Aussie Bar.

    Okayama!
I lived there for 2 years and have very fond memories of it. Thanks for the visit "home".
1:59 Momotaro (look him up) statue on the left.
2:20 The fountain looks nice when it's running - which it isn't in this shot, just dripping.
4:54 Bic Camera is a great place to buy electronics, but surprisingly also alcohol. They have a good selection.
8:48 Nishigawa River Walk. It's quite peaceful and goes for a long way.
    17:25 Okayama Symphony Hall
17:54 Omotecho Shopping Street. It used to be so busy here but since the Aeon Shopping Mall opened near the main train station, foot traffic to this place has significantly dwindled.
22:41 Pizza Patio! 懐かしい。 I used to go here solo or to meet my girlfriend for lunch. Menu: a Japanese interpretation of Italian food. Not the best food, but passable and good prices for lunch. It's small and cozy. (There are some vending machines across the street that sell booze.)
56:09 The imported foods shop at the top of the stairs has (had?) a good selection at not-too-crazy prices. I'm wondering how they've fared during the pandemic.

Do you think people in southern Japan are nicer than the north and Tokyo? I have heard this a lot but I have NEVER been to Japan. 🤔

@@john83me14 I've never been to Hokkaido. so I can't speak to that. My general impression is that as you travel more south (Japanese would tend to refer to it as "West") people are more friendly, but it's hard to generalize. I think it's more of a city vs. inaka thing. People in the countryside can be be very warm but tend to be unsophisticated and can have some strange notions about strangers/foreigners. People in the cities tend to be more aloof.
Exceptions would be Osaka, where people are more outspoken and likely to express any concerns forcefully and Okinawa which is very insular.
It's like any other place in that there are good/friendly people and less good/jerks. Most Japanese practice their nation's version of "Minnesota nice". That can be annoying sometimes, but I prefer it to people being unrepentant A-holes, which is common so many other places.

I lived there for two years too! It was a wonderful time. I miss autumn/winter especially but kind of resented November because a lot of the farmers would burn their crop residue then and the air would be full of smoke lol. But the whole prefecture feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket

I lived there for two years and I would move back again if I could. It's such a wonderful place to live. The first time I moved to Japan I lived in Tokyo and I was afraid I wouldn't like Okayama, but I love it so much

Thank you so much for posting! As someone who had lived in Okayama for two years, this is fantastic! Last night I snuggled up in my TV room to take a virtual walk through my much beloved former city. It was a delight, and I felt like I was there.

I visited Okayama 2015 and stayed there for two weeks. The castle and the park are gorgeous! The kibi area in the north of Okayama is nice too. Okayama is a good starting point for visiting Himeji, Hiroshima and Takamatsu on Shikoku island!

I was contracted to teach English in Japan this year. Unfortunately the contract was cancelled due to the border restrictions etc. So seeing these walks kinda eases my pain. haha. I was really looking forward to seeing Japan.

@@WorldWalks Possibly, but I'm a art teacher here in the states, and I've gone back to work. So probably I'll have to just visit on my summer vacation. This was kinda my one shot at trying to live there. Real bummer.

Generally people in southern Japan are friendlier than Tokyo people, but they speak lesser English , if you visit as a tourist you are going to have fun anywhere in Japan 😊
