It's incredible to believe an effect so realistic was created nearly 85 years ago! Even now it's a powerful and terrifying scene of nature at its worst.
Same here. I’m 64 and I haven’t seen this in a long time and it still made me feel anxious as I remembered how it terrified me as a child. I also am so intrigued by actual tornadoes. The amount of awesome videos on UA-cam of tornadoes is really awesome.
Holy smokes, the final five seconds of the test scene is far more scary realistic than any scene in the movie Twister. I have to believe that whoever created the effect witnessed a real tornado, which was exceedingly rare sight to see before TV and video.
I’m still blown away by this scene, pun intended. The tornado is so effective here. Both ominous and inevitable. Watching it shift around in the background is downright scary. The sound design is masterful. Breathtaking for 1939
Not to mention this. Them different cut-seances the wind direction Changes too. Take betweens the Dorthys Aunt and Uncle and the Farmhands getting in the storm cellar then when Dorthy struggles hard to get inside her house on the other side
The fact that tornado is nothing but a Arabic stocking with dust being blown through it and being manipulated by chicken wire shows you the power of practical effects
As a kid, that scared the lovin’ bejeebies out of me! One thing I gotta say though, is even with all the CGI and things they have now, nothing holds a candle to this scene! And I’m a huge fan of the movie Twister, so that’s saying a lot!🌪️ 💜
It seems to me they didn't show the house being engulfed by the twister in the movie, as that would have confused reality with her dream? Now I will have to go view the film again, as I am not quite sure! I first saw the movie as a five year old on black and white TV. My parents put me on the floor directly in front of the TV, as they wanted to watch me watching it! The movie instills family values consistent with America's founding.
There's a video of an elderly man who took a video of a dark tornado coming toward his house until it hit, and this is very similar. I read they decided not to use this scent because test audiences were terrified.
For 1939, this is absolutely perfection! Even by today's standards, I would take this kind of tornado over the overly dramatic CGI stuff we have now. It looks so real because it is real! Practical effects for ya!
Engineers know secretly, that analog is theoretically better. The studios use computers instead of analog because CGI is easier, and the people with all those analog skills are simply not around anymore.
It definitely holds up today. Though its not super accurate, not that it matters. I disagree about cgi though. Some cgi can look crazy good with the right budget.
It's interesting that they made a tornado, but they also made a low hanging cloud in the background that possibly could also be a tornado. Makes me wonder if the person who created this scene had seen a real tornado with a visible sub vortices (two twisters). Either way, the person whi made this scene really understood how terrifying they were.
I remember being on the edge of my seat when I first saw this as a kid. The way it got so dark so quick & how strong the wind was. At least with a hurricane you have time to get away, but tornados are just a whole other beast. As a kid I was really worried for the animals, particularly the horses, but as a grown up you think about Dorothy's anut & uncle & the farm hands all huddled down in that celler listening to the twister come roaring closer knowing that she was outside somewhere & all scared for her. Can you imagine when they all came out and found her unconscious in her room? She must have been out a while given that her uncle says they were worried she was going to leave them. As for that test footage at the end, while its really impressive, I can see why they cut it out. Given how close it gets to the house and then the dust just seems to implode around it, people could easily assume the farm was destroyed and that Dorothy may have died and the whole thing was her in heaven or something.
1:45 - while the use of the "sock" is incredible, I feel it's moments like this, when the funnel is largely obscured by dust cloud effects, that hide any chance of recognizing the practical effect and really sell you on the "authenticity" of the tornado.
For years before the how did they do this I thought it was some sort of animation to make it look real. Even the explanation on how this was done is still mind boggling. To make it look so real and terrifying is nothing short of film art form.
I will maintain to the day I die that this tornado scene was far more authentic then anything in the CGI created tornadoes in the 1997 movie Twister. If the end of this film is the original test footage oh, it's even more authentic.
Out on the horizon you can see the first storm chasers on horse back sketching the tornado…some with advanced technology of an accordion camera on a tripod.
I agree. This was splendid for it's time. You can see that the barn and trees are miniatures towards the end. I always marveled at this effect they crafted. They made the twister out of muslin. I found this test reel - ua-cam.com/video/AxrL-30lZvs/v-deo.html
If that test scene remained and was in final film, I'd imagine part of that clip playing just before Dorothy gets knocked out by the window sill. Perhaps an extra clip plays of a close up of the bottom of the house being lifted, then cut to the ending of tornado footage that transition fades to the normal clip of Dorothy's unconscious face and showing the house being spun up into the sky, the rest playing normally from there.
Well you're not wrong! The original author of the Wizard of Oz books, L. Frank Baum heard about 2 tornadoes that destroyed the town of Irving Kansas in 1879. One of the people who died in the tornado was named Dorothy!
Not even the infamous Twister movie of 1996 can top that. It’s really impressive what the creators were able to accomplish, given that they didn’t have half the knowledge of what we know about tornadoes today. This stock footage was so good, it was used for future movies, and then just spruced up to make it look original.
When I see scenes like this, it always amazes me how often nearly all of the animals manage to survive.... It's a shame we don't know their instincts when dealing with something like this..
I wonder how they made the sound of the tornado. Even though a tornado doesn't sound like a bunch of people screaming, it has a steady roar, likened to that of a speeding train or even a jet airplane at cruising altitude.
I have heard many meteorologists say that this is TO DATE, the most realistic and most terrifying tornado that was ever filmed! This was done in 1939, long before CGI and before special effects, have graduated to unbelievable images! I wholly agree, this is the more fear inducing tornado EVER put on screen! The sound of this still makes the hair on my neck rise and even the motions of it a very realistic! The persons involved with doing this must have studied and seen tornadoes and wanted to make you believe that this baby was for real, THEY SUCCEEDED!!!
OMG, that last 10 seconds of this clip is super intense! I was thinking, "This is what someone would see when they were about to die in the path of a real tornado! Folks must have been terrified out of their minds by tornados that would suddenly appear back in the day, before there were any reliable weather prediction instruments or so many technological ways to warn people. These darn things would just show up on a bad storm day.
*I always repeat this » **2:35** and this » **0:30** and this » **0:56** at the first 1• one at **0:30** I loved how the tornado howled from the wind and the second 2• I loved how the tornado make the wind does a big howl in the distance and the third 3• I loved how the tornado goes behind the house at **2:35*
Of All the Tornado Chasers that I watch , THIS Hollywood fabrication sends more chills through my bones than even REAL footage ! ... that's the magic of Cinema 🎬🎥
ONLY ONE THING BOTHERS ME TO THIS DAY!!! WHEN DOROTHY IS UP IN THE TWISTER, SHE REFERS TO IT AS A CYCLONE!!!!! IN MY WHOLE LIFE IVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE CALL A TORNADO A CYCLONE🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
This movie and Twister have the scariest tornados I've ever seen in cinema. The first tornado encountered in Twister is a sidewinder, same as the one in The Wizard of Oz. They're unpredictable and scary as hell.
That test scene of the tornado approaching the house is terrifying, it was removed probably because it would be too scary for younger viewers and plus the filmmakers didn't think it fits well.
as a child, that tornado scared me more than Ms. Gulch's metamorphosis into the witch. I had nightmares about tornadoes. I'm 60 and watching it still scares me. I pray I never see one in my lifetime 🙏🏼
when i was a kid i thought the scary part of this was the tornado itself, now as an adult I realize the terrifying part is the idea of your child being out in the storm, and there's nothing you can do about it
I respectfully disagree. (Spoilers below. For those who somehow haven’t seen the movie yet) From the end of the movie, we know that the tornado likely didn’t REALLY lift up the house in one piece and fling it all the way to Oz. It’s more likely that it just caused some damage to the farm and the house as it passed by after Dorothy got knocked out by the window, and all the events of the movie after that were just a dream. After the tornado dissipated, everyone left the storm shelter and found Dorothy unconscious inside the house. After giving her some medical care, she woke up to her family, inside the intact house, in Kansas. If they had kept that last bit of the tornado in the movie, it would’ve been pretty unrealistic. As there is no chance Dorothy would’ve survived that, or the house would be intact after a tornado shred right through it. But you’re totally right about that bit building suspense.
@@itheman6s766 yes. Ultimately it depends how they wanted to end the story. Whether as in the book or like this with it all being a dream which would have made this sequence rather inconsistent or a testament to how they build things in Kansas withstanding an F1-F3 whatever this would have been lol
Ow my ears. Also, everyone who watched this scene as a kid became infatuated and terrified of the prospect of a tornado hitting their area...there's something just so ominous about the way THIS tornado looks, even though that's not exactly how they look (they don't look so solid, typically).
Interesting fact. Charles Grapewin was the actor who played Uncle Henry. He was from Xenia, Ohio. This town was struck by a violent EF5 tornado in 1974. Comparing the fictional Wizard of Oz tornado to Xenia’s real storm was like comparing a teen vandal to a terrorist. 🌪

The scene that birthed my fear and fascination of tornadoes as a child. Fantastic Job creating this creepy scene.

Me too. I saw a show that shown that Tornado super close. I was scared too when I was little
Holy smokes, the final five seconds of the test scene is far more scary realistic than any scene in the movie Twister. I have to believe that whoever created the effect witnessed a real tornado, which was exceedingly rare sight to see before TV and video.
As someone who has seen three of them, this is very realistic, both the sights and sounds.
I’m still blown away by this scene, pun intended.
The tornado is so effective here. Both ominous and inevitable. Watching it shift around in the background is downright scary. The sound design is masterful.
Breathtaking for 1939

No special effects today could top this. It was frightening.
It's amazing that they created that back then, a big cloth tube with fans pumping out dust, and a guy up on rigging making it move, pretty ingenious.
It looks so so real like storm chasing ide see on the weather channel
yes, they created a totally believable writhing monster of wind and dust, roaring across the flat plains of America's heartland. God have mercy🌪️🙏🏼😔
As a kid, that scared the lovin’ bejeebies out of me! One thing I gotta say though, is even with all the CGI and things they have now, nothing holds a candle to this scene! And I’m a huge fan of the movie Twister, so that’s saying a lot!🌪️ 💜

It's amazing that the best looking tornado in cinema is from a movie from the 30s.
For 1939, this is absolutely perfection! Even by today's standards, I would take this kind of tornado over the overly dramatic CGI stuff we have now. It looks so real because it is real! Practical effects for ya!

The tornado was a literal pipe throwing smoke out of it
Most realistic tornado.
exactly! looks so much better than the CGI stuff that we have today..
It definitely holds up today. Though its not super accurate, not that it matters. I disagree about cgi though. Some cgi can look crazy good with the right budget.
The cut to the test scene at the end unintentionally makes it look like the movie just ends with the tornado engulfing the house lol
The ending is absolutely terrifying, it gave me chills 😨
Same Meg.....I just hope it really miss the house
That's probably why it wasn't in the final film. That was too much even for this movie.
I wish it was in the movie and I wish this video ha no black and white I’d rather *SEPI*
It would have freaked kids out. It freaked me out watching it just now!
I know right 😰

I’ve seen tornados appear in quite a few movies, but this one is by far the scariest. Remarkable considering this movie was made in 1939!
My fear of tornadoes as a child came from this scene.
20 years later and watching this almost brought that fear back 😢
Has to be the #1 best tornado re-creation for film. All done without computer technology!
This is the best film special effect footage ever of a tornado in a movie! Ever!
This is a sidewinder twister They are rare but do happen
This scene scared the crap out of me as a kid! So Well Done for the times!!
This looked so realistic
Actually, I’ve learned that this was done using a ginormous sock and a wind machine.
This indeed begs the question. Do wind machines even exist in the 30s or is it just a me thing?
this aged so well

It was even more realistic than those matte background paintings in Oz. This WAS the great special effect in that film.
Well the only Tornado of Twister that looked so real was the F-5....Or EF-5 as some like to call it
I'll be that person and say that tornado was created using a wool stocking, some chicken wire, and some dust to blow around it. Impressive, yes?
If that test scene remained and was in final film, I'd imagine part of that clip playing just before Dorothy gets knocked out by the window sill. This is still very accurate to the behavior of rope stage tornadoes. Hence why I get nightmares with this scene.
i love tornadoes because of this movie
Real movie magic. This plus Margret Hamilton equals amazing.......and also pants poopingly, I need years of therapy scary.
The twister was easily the most terrifying thing in the movie, even beating out the Wicked Witch... which is saying something.
