A 20 Day Camping Adventure Through Barren Grounds to the Arctic Ocean E.3 - Low Water
Вставка

- In this episode, Ted @TheRealTedBaird and I navigate across a windy bay, pushing through the first large headwater lake of our journey. As we continue, we encounter a stunning rapid that forces us into an unexpected detour. The river’s water levels are notably low, presenting a significant challenge. What we hoped to run smoothly now requires a series of portages and wading through shallow sections. Our progress is slow, with a few long portages eating up much of our time and energy. We only manage to cover about six kilometers for the day.
Despite the tough conditions, our efforts are rewarded with an incredible campsite perched atop a high turret. The panoramic views are breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the surrounding landscape. However, the beauty comes with a downside-the bugs are relentless, adding an extra layer of discomfort to our stay.

Oh my! The bugs would have made me doubt my sanity - you guys have great fortitude
You had me laughing while you were talking about Ted having trouble getting through the rocks in the river and he goes floating past you... that was to funny. Thanks for sharing, Y'all did awesome. Such a beautiful place to share too.
He def showed me up there! Haha. Glad you liked that. Ya, very beautiful place to say the least, beyond my expectations.
I truly thank you for sharing all this great footage with us because it’ll never be the same without you guys being there! Keep on singing Jim. 👏👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯😎😎😎
Thanks a lot and will do haha! Have a good one
❤❤❤😂when you were talking about how rough floating through the bolders was and how ít was going to be rough on Ted! Then he just floats by with ease😂😂😂 and you went oh! I Lost it❤❤❤❤😂😂😂 Love you two!!! Cant wait for more
Ted casually ripppin through. ZERO effort! Lol😂
I was cracking up at that! 😂😂😂
You two are very brave souls , looks like a very difficult trip for sure . My husband and I ( seniors )are sitting here watching glad we are here and not there !! Enjoy your adventure guys , be safe . Thanks for sharing .
😅
Sing all you want Jim, once in a lifetime audience for your tunes in the great north. Oh yea, we don't mind that much it's part of the adventure.
Haha, thanks a lot
Amazing footage. Makes me feel like I'm in the canoe w/you. Great trip for you guys.
Awesome Jim and Ted!
Adventures exist on this channel. Stay golden my friend. 👊💪😆🇺🇸
Will do and thanks a lot!
Pro Tip: break tent poles down from the middle not the end -- reduces strain on elastic & extends pole life.
Nothing like stirring the morning coffee with the leg of a porta potty. Has to do something for the flavor doesn't it? What are all those little birds flying around there. Where's all the Grayling? Another great adventure video! Thanks Jim.
Another excellent episode! Loved the underwater lure save too. Hard to believe the low water making running the rapids impossible and risky. You and Ted are adventurers extraordinaire for sure. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.
Sooo buggy! That would drive me crazy! Bummer that the water isn't cooperating. Looking to the rest of this adventure! Thanks for sharing with us!
great one! This channel is a relief to watch, just so real.
The bugs and the low water levels would have done me in. It was amazing how you both tolerated the conditions.
Thanks a lot, it was a little concerning but we know the river would gain volume as we got further down it.
Ted in Yukon pops up. Life stops. ❤
I am loving this video. When you thought Ted was going to have a rough time and he casually canoed right past you. That was hilarious. Then when you were having your hot chocolate and having to sip it through your bug outfit. And you said it filters out the dead mosquitoes. I about spit out my sweet tea . Lmao . Thank you so much for all that you do to bring us awesome videos both of you. And thank you also for always making us Giggle . But them bugs. OMG . I couldn't do it.
Thanks a lot! Glad you got a laugh out of those parts. The bigs weren’t the best haha, but they weren’t brutal all the time of course.
@@JimBairdAdventurer your videos are always very professionally done with awesome scenery footage that I enjoy very very much. The giggles are just an extra bonus . Thank you
Another good1 as usual 👍🏽💯
Bugs aside... Its a breath taking landscape. Mohsi choo.
Ted holding you down under water with his paddle to get that precious lure was hilarious. So far Ted's canoe is holding up! Enjoyed seeing you conquer all the challenges that are coming up, looking forward to Episode 4!
So funny about stirring the coffee!
Luv tat song, now you sang tat song, Coffee should be strong 😊
Right! i went back and watched again this morning 😂 and he said oh Nice😂😂😂 cracking up i missed the Nice part 😂😂😂😂, befor the moment Ted free flowed past jim i was in seconds of worry of Teds boat and gear getting over bolders❤ Just Love these Brothers!!!❤
Hiya Jim & Ted, This was fun, so beautiful, informative, funny and exciting. I loved the stuff u both did together & of the Singing. Thank-you Both❣️
Jim and Ted, how difficult it is to navigate through the Arctic, very complicated with so many rocks, that must exhaust them but it is still an adventure. Have a good trip 👍❤️🛶🛶🧭🌊🌬️
"Any hoo" That's the Scots coming through again Jim. Keep it up and greetings from Scotland.
Stunning weather. Love the demonstration of how to have a meal wearing a bugsuit. I've had many a meal under a rain poncho in the pouring rain while hiking in the Rockies, but dealing with the mesh is a whole different level!
The micro this day was an unrelenting slog, but the macro was breathtakingly beautiful. The bugs were over the top!
Love the collection of songs. I'm you are keeping the bears at bay. Even bears have singing standards.
The aerial shots just add the cherry to the moment
Thanks a lot!
I really don't know how you guys handle the bugs (and to a lesser extent all the portages)...you are an inspiration to us all!
Glad to see you out adventuring again!
Thanks a lot!
Hard going for sure! Looking forward to the next one.
I remember twenty five or more years ago reading about traveling the Yukon and north from cliff jacobsons books. One I remember he was traveling with Gordon lightfoot. It’s so much more beautiful than I’d pictured reading. It sounds so barren, and I’m sure parts of it are, but it’s still incredible to look at.
The first artic river we did was in late July it was like this river verly low. A few years later we did it again in early June water was high. We did one river out of Mckenzie Mountains in early September and water was like spring run off as it was snowing in the mountains and milting during the day. There were areas that were big rapids that during the summer would have been ripples. We used inflatable canoe and inflatable double sea kayak. The material was extreamly durable. We had no punctures and I atribuate it to the boats were flexable and rolled over the rocks. You are doing well. We hated the bugs.
Very cool. What river in the Mackenzie Mountains? Natala / Keel?
@@JimBairdAdventurer Natala/Keel in September. We flipped once we wear wet suits and paddling jackets. Hope River water levels were low and Great Bear River was normal. We have been trying to do Slave River for 2 years but water levels have been low. We did Soper on Baffin twice. At low water you bump over a lot of bolders. At high water class 2 to almost class 3 rapids for short sections. Bugs were very friendly. We as you noted wind gets rid of bugs. Your presentation is very good. Like the cuts to food prep.
Great show! I almost had to put my bug suit on just watching. TY. Many Blessings.
Tuffstuff expedition material is the bomb.
What a slog thru all those rocks and low water. Twelve hours wow! You must've been exhausted. Looks like the fishing was good, as well as the weather. (but not the black flies) Great video! Always good to see one of your videos pop up.
Thanks for checking it out. Ya, it was discouraging to have been trudging in for so long and yet have made it hardly any distance. Still, we were rewarded with that amazing campsite.
This is once again a fantastic video, well worth the wait to watch it!!! I am curious as to how Ted ended up with the collapsable canoe😂😂
Jim: "Ted's going to have alot of trouble coming through this"
Ted, floating effortlessly past in the background: "Hold my beer"
Haha
Counting bugs is my favorite thing to watch-from my chesterfield that is.
Haha, yes, much better from there
I've seen Ted rock the bug jacket several times. I don't recall seeing Jim wear one, though maybe my memory is failing me. But the bugs must have been absolutely atrocious for Jim to suit up! The rocks suck for canoeing, but that cold clear shallow water is some awesome scenery/fishing!!
Beautiful scenery! Thanks for all the amazing drone footage!
Love watching the flow of water. Great photography. 👍
Awesome video Jim. The editing of the waterfall with the music made me think i was watching a movie
You could repack your food in disposable Ziploc paper bags. I didn't know there was sealable paper bags until a few weeks ago but the ones I bought held up to the task of a weekend.
The Rocky rapidly areas are tough but…those falls and tight channel are tough but breath taking
They sure are! Very beautiful country
great vid!
This video series is awesome.
What an epic journey, The river is so bony hopefully you get more water, and less black flies!
🤞
Agreed with Ted, that Kirkland trail mix is the best
He attributes it there being peanut m&ms in it
What a series
Nice one guys, thanks.
I laughed so hard watching you sip hot chocolate through your net! I'll be sure to try that some time (here in Alaska).
Hey, it worked! Haha, filtered int the bugs too.
Too funny you're talking about Ted getting stuck and then he goes right by😂😂
Two cool dudes 👍🏻
Thanks a lot
Man, lookit them bugs. No way, Jose. Back in my dipping days we used to spit right through our headnets. Young and dumb but they were good times.
Thanks!
Nice! Enjoy the Saldana fishing. Booking like if!.
Last winter was real dry here too.Contiued thru summer.
If you still have lures in two episodes I’d be surprised. Love the series like always.
Thanks, no spoilers 🤐 lol 🎣
Excellent adventure but the bugs are beyond a nightmare.
They are bad in the Arctic barren grounds. Some days, they are among the worst we’ve ever seen however over all they weren’t as bad as some places
What we do to get a lure back. I bet Ted felt “bad” holding you under the water😂. Another great episode as usual.
Thanks for showing these. I'm now 58 years old and that's not the problem. I've started having seizures this year. When I walk into a woods, all off that information of too many trees taxes my brain and it triggers seizures. Anything that replicates flashing lights may cause me to have a seizure. My last seizure was about a month ago and I was about to enter the BWCA in Northern Minnesota. My friends found me flopping like a crappie. Videos like yours are all that I have left now. I'm assuming that if you are back home at your cabin or house, that you are seeing the Auroras? I'm right at the 45⁰ N Parallel, so we've had good luck here...
that's a mighty big daredevil jim!
Would rather have had a spoon with a Five of Diamonds pattern that big as it’s better for lake trout but I didn’t have time to source one and that’s all they had in the way of massive spoons at the local bait and tackle store.
that had me dying laughing when you said you were worried about ted and he came bombing down the rapids LMAO!!!
We got ted or jim. I like them both.😮😅
👍👍
Baird Brothers tackle the long boulder
Slog. Thankfully, no griz or polar bears in sight!
Well I'll just brush that off and have a coffee ! LMAO 😎😁😎
Ole Teddy missed his chance with that paddle.😮
Everyone reckons Australia is bad for bugs, those blackflies would drive the most fair dinkum Aussie to the brink😅 good stuff mate👍👍
1 slap & You got meat for hamburger for you haha giggle !!! Those bugs must of been big this time !!! Got Your yearly bath in here I see but that spoon was worth it for you !!! Glad you got it back there are a lot of rocks there !!! 930 pm Hey Jimbo ??? Those rocks are something there !!!
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh from Australia
Yaaaa!
I dunno about Ted the legend but I'd be so nervous with that pack boat! I suppose it's nothing a whole roll of gorilla clear repair tape won't fix... That stuff can be applied underwater apparently.
Sweet Trip, I have a packbaot canoe and it can slide over rocks, Not sure about that brand Ted was paddling. But it Cliff Jacobson raves about them.
It turns out it can slide over them pretty well. I think packboat was essentially modeled after Alley
@@JimBairdAdventurer I think you’re right. I have only had my pack boat out a couple of times since I got it this year, but I’m pretty impressed with it. Looking forward to the rest of the series, man you’ve been an inspiration for me and my channel.
No Jim, I'm going to have nightmares about black flies, lol. I'm curious why you don't use mosquito repellent? Beautiful trip though...what an amazing place.
Bummer about the fishing gear down here I. Oregon we’re in full fall salmon! I missed all fishing this season cause my back hurt injury bit fickit I’m 60! Next year! Maybe I’ll be with U guys and cook for ya! I’m serious
He turned to his friend and said, "My you're looking especially delicious this evening!"
Lol
The bugs are crazy around your face. You have a big collection camp of songs?
Dig it👍🏻
My first thought when you casted was snag lol
What would all those bugs eat if you and Ted weren't out there? There's nothing else with blood out there above water.
Finally
Holy moly. Those bugs. I know you mentioned a paste you use. What is it? And what is the brand of the folding canoe? Looks decent.
Thanks, ya the Muskol 30% Deet Lotion is good. The folding canoe is by Alley.
Was it purely a weight decision for Ted to bring that pack canoe? It really adds a pucker factor to the trip.
Yes they explained it all in the first video of this series 👍
@@johnnyd6858 a good episode, and I got that weight was the big deal with everything. I wasn’t sure if Ted had already decided to use that canoe because of sponsorship or whatnot , or if it was solely based on the flight capacity.
I throughly enjoy your videos but the songs were great
Niiice! Haha. Thanks for watching 👍
The crazy amount of bugs that are on your video
Hope you got some bug spray
We def do! Thanks for watching
So many bugs it’s amazing. What’s on your screen that your cameras are picking up
It’s a bug world
They were pretty bad at times for sure
brutal
Not the best day on the river haha
That’s a lot of work to leave your cameras so far away and then go down river and then have to go back and get your cameras every time
It’s true, but it’s worth it for the shot usually
Those bugs are terrible. I moved from Alberta to Vancouver island years ago mainly because of the bugs. Only wasps here- but they are irritable also.
Love your vids bro, just a suggestion i noticed you have alot of plastic bags when you burn off your rubbish, have you tried wax coated bags to store your foodstuffs in ect,may be a better less impactful way to travel?.
Not a bad idea though the weight and bulk might be an issue. Also if they needed washing and they may hold into scent. The ziplocks are see through too which is definitely helpful. Typically we save the large ziplocks that don’t have direct contact with food but they would never last as long as other options.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Hey this could still be a sustainable alternative as a product for adventures such as yourself who are aware of the impact to the environment regarding plastics and such that other people are aware of also that would look too packaging products like this that are less harmful (ie wax paper which is quite waterproof and durable for the necessary time) that could be a thing
Agree! Hiker packaging. Please don’t burn plastic.
Thanks for sharing your amazing videos, what a challenge so far. Incredible drive from you and your brother when thing suck!!
Looking for the family video 😅
Do you guys carry 2way communication devices for rapids?
Now but we do each have an InReach so we could ping each other if we got separated. Walkies would be nice
I have to put on bug spray to watch.
Haha!
Pack it in. Pack it out. If you think that burning plastics is the best alternative perhaps bringing them is a bad idea or perhaps you’re just mistaken.
👍👍👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😃😃😃😃😃❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
6:03 did you get your little pack back?
Waiting for the witchhunt to begin because you burned some plastic...
To be an adventurer is to bug squat.
