Bellemere’s sacrifice was the most heartbreaking scene of the first season of the anime (live action too.) She couldn’t deny them. Remember they were still paying the tribute at the beginning of the episode, which is 8 years later! Arlong was bleeding them dry! “So get more blood!”If she had denied them and were discovered they would have killed Bellemere, Nojiko, and Nami. Bellemere, did the only thing she could. She was their mother.
The weird change for me was Arlong deciding to attack the village after telling rat to get the money. I thought he wanted to build a empire so he would just control them to the end of time with constantly forcing them to pay tribute, not kill or destroy their lives.
@@islandboy9381 Now that Arlong had the Grand Line map, he was ready to destroy everything in the East Blue, starting with Cocoyashi village, and then head to the Grand Line and he was going to become King of the Pirates and rule over the entire world. They didn’t make this super clear in the Live Action but one of the main reason why she didn’t lie was because it would mean her daughters would of had to leave the village. Both daughters would of had to leave in order for her to pay the 100,000 tribute. But by saying she had two daughters and using their 100,000 for them, she allowed them to stay in the village and gave them about one months time to go find more money for next months tribute. Arlong said its 50,000 for kids and 100,000 per adult to say alive.
What they left out also is that Arlong and his men destroyed the ships of the village so no one could escape, Bellemere with her experience knew this and knew the girls would end up orphaned again or killed.
