You may already know this, EU-USA flights are usually much cheaper than USA-EU flights. For example, AMS-LAX-AMS (on the same departure arrival dates) is way cheaper than LAX-AMS-LAX.

I was planning to fly from A to B, and then return from C to A - I mean a multi-city flight, the same ticket. I notice that if I fly from A to C and return from B to A, the ticket is a lot cheaper! So, I changed my travel plans.
That is great information. Sometimes you have to be creative to find lower fares.
For EU airlines, carbon taxes are also buried in the fuel surcharges when not the ticket price itself.

Mostly supply and demand, with a mixture of corporate greed, for example JFK - LAX or SFO under 300 USD RT, vs JFK - LIS around 700 USD, about the same distance , they can charge more just because less airlines fly the Lisbon route
