So the official teaching of the Catholic church on intercession is that we are connected as the body of christ (the church) on earth and in heaven as 1 body. The way we connect is through the sacraments, specifically the Holy Eucharist.
Sin hurts out connection with others in the body of Christ, and sin makes our prayers weaker.
This is why we ask saints to pray for us, because since they're alive in heaven and have been perfectly sanctified and are pure of sin, their prayers are as effective as a prayer can be.
Intercession is NOT mandatory in Catholicism or even orthodox

I do not see why so many have such trouble with the Trinity. Having many consciousnesses is the way we are, and did not God say let's make man in our own image? Some may think that means that God has a head and two arms and two legs etc. I think that what he was talking about was that he is a being that is not a single cell but has more than a single consciousness.
You are not a single thing. There are trillions of cells that make up the human body. These cells communicate with each other and are in full cooperation at all times. Even the brain itself is not a singularity but a collective consciousness. Each hemisphere of the brain operates both separately and in conjunction with the other hemisphere as well as the brain stem. Despite each part of you having its own ability to think and sense of self, there are no arguments among the different persons of you. You can survive with a hemisphere gone.
It seems that God has more than one person and yet has harmony among all the persons and he created a creature, man, with the same sort of collective consciousness. If you want a true singularity, look to the amoeba. It is a single cell with no collectivity at all. I do not imagine God as an amoeba.
