  • Hello swimmers! Have you ever wondered how the hip can be the main motor in propulsion of the front crawl? In this video, I will answer all your questions. Join me in this video and I explain how, despite not having obvious paddles like the arms, the hips can propel forward and increase swimming speed.
Discover how each movement is connected and works as part of a single integrated movement, similar to walking. Through practical examples and analogies, I will explain the importance of maintaining a connection between the arms, hips and body to maximize efficiency in the water.
Additionally, we will explore the concept of proper grip and how to seek support with the entire arm to generate effective propulsion from the hip. We will see how tools such as side fins help to better understand the importance of rotation and muscle connection in freestyle swimming.
Don't miss this video full of valuable information to improve your swimming technique and increase your speed in the water.

Interesting video, lots of info and food for thought. At 68 I think I might need to adjust a few things. For the record I liked English dub it made it easier to follow the physical demonstration you gave and with the students in the water. I don't speak Spanish, just English and Norwegian.

I would like to highlight one concern here Coach Rafa....
imagine a hand hold one support... and try to push body... the maximum movement will happen in one case only... if support will not move.... in this case the hand will not move.... the shoulder will move forward to direction of support....
Now let us convert this example to swimming....
the crawling hand should work almost same as the above mentioned example.... proper anchorage of arm will lead to maximize the shoulder moving forward and then the whole body will move forward... any slipping of arm will lead to useless crawling by arm...
    Million Thanks Coach Rafa... ❤❤

Rafa, you are wonderful. I am now much closer to understanding how hip rotation works.

Great video. I was wondering if you could explain what the legs are supposed to be doing while the hips are rotating. I don't think we can achieve a proper "hip driven" stroke without coupling hip rotation with kicks? Thank you.

Raffa, I like your explanations. But please explain why the hips rotate so little in the TI technique.

It doesn’t. That method is bolshet and its over rotating. All these methods are basic principles of freestyle “repackaging” differently.

I prefer your videos to be in Spanish, with sub titles rather than English dubbed over the Spanish.
As for the hips being the drivers, land based sports that use rotation to generate energy are exact opposites of long axis swimming strokes. It is mechanically and physically impossible for the lower body to generate any rotational forces because there is NOTHING for the feet and lower body to anchor on to generate any force at all. Land sports generate their rotational forces either with feet at shoulder width apart like golf or a karate punch (check out Bruce Lee's 1 inch punch). With the batter, or a pitcher, they step into the action which generates the force. In all of these land based examples, the spiral goes from the feet through the hips, and out the finger tips to hit, throw, or swing. With swimming, we are pulling, not pushing or throwing. Without exception, any swimmer who is properly connected from finger tips to toes, the pulling arm is the anchor for generating the rotational energy. The shoulders rotate independently from each other, not as a unit like the hips do. The pulling arm starts the rotation, the down kick on the same side happens, and then the recover arm completes the body rotation. The rotation in swimming does 2 things. One is that it makes for a longer lever to apply to the pulling action, so you go from your spine to your finger tips rather than just from your shoulder. It also gets the top side shoulder out of the water for less drag. If you don't believe me, swim some catch up style freestyle. Every thing anchors on the pulling arm, and nothing comes up from the hips.

All the top elite coaches will tell you that there is shoulder driven freestyle and also HIP driven freestyle. The dry land examples are good for novices to comprehend what their hips are supposed to be doing horizontally in the water. People inherit shoulder issues when they only allow their shoulders to do all the work. If they allow their shoulders AND their hips to rotate in tandem, they can generate more power and then the speed naturally follows.
But to imply that the hips are unimportant in the freestyle form is really incorrect, because the hips absolutely can help with the long axis strokes. 😊

Well, I have chatted with Gary Hall Sr. of the Race Club about this same topic. He responded some thing like 'hmm, even in the 50 meter sprint the pulling arm starts to move just before the recover arm enters the water'. Yes, if you try to do every thing with just the shoulders, you will have shoulder problems and be much slower in the water. In order for the hips to be able to generate rotation forces, the feet have to be anchored to some thing, and the water does not allow you to do this. Recently Fares Ksebati did a video with Rowdy Gaines and he finally made the comment that the rotation comes from the shoulders and pulling arm. I have argued with this about him for some time. As I said above, swim the catch up drill for a bit and notice how the rotation comes from the shoulders first, and then the hips rotate. The shoulders do not rotate at the same time like the hips do. About the only exception to this is with back stroke where the arms rotate opposite of each other, and with the 50 meter sprint, again the arms are opposite of each other.

Let me explain what you are saying from principal of Mechanics ....
the swimmer add energy to his front part = Shoulders and two arms by hip rotation ...
now adding rotational energy is not enough to move forward Why ??!!
Because we need to convert rotational energy to translational energy so swimmer can move forward ....
So How to Do That ??!!
    By Arm Movement .......
    Raise Elbow Up ...
When Hand insert to the water ...full rotational energy transfer to the arm ...
Now extend the Arm by 30 Degrees with Water this will produce force on the arm ....
part of this arm in motion direction so the swimmer will move forward ...
another component of this force push arm down ...this will make down hill and gliding ....
More clever swimmer who can transfer the maximum amount of rotation to translational energy same As greatest Coach Shinji Takeuchi (if spelling is correct)
so Here I would like to say another observation ...your higher Arm High Elbow .. raising your hand ... all of these things to arrange the side of body that out of water
to be ready to absorb rotational motion and convert to translational motion....
That is Why Coach Terry Laughlin he is one of the genius man in swimming ...because this man who was discovered this issue ....
roll your body by core muscles ...transfer this energy to move forward ...very comfort ....
the fatal mistake if swimmer could not convert this rotation to translational motion ... so the swimmer will roll only , slow motion , body will roll not move forward ...
1000 Million Thanks to Coach Rafa .. Your videos are impressive
    All the Best

I love the way you explain this, Mecheil! Are you an expert in mechanics or physics? The precision of your explanation is impressive and perfectly describes the process of converting rotational energy into forward motion.
As one of Terry Laughlin’s disciples, I’m thrilled to receive such intelligent comments like yours. I truly appreciate you sharing these insights here; it’s an approach that certainly enriches the knowledge of our community.
A million thanks again, and warm regards!
