How to open and repair an inoperative Ford EcoSport Tailgate lock

- In this video I shall be diagnosing and repairing a tailgate which will not open on a 2015 Ford EcoSport. The fault is caused by a weak operating solenoid, in this video I show how to test the feed and ground to the solenoid to confirm the fault. I don't show how to remove the tailgate trim but its simply 2 screws and a sharp pull to remove, I aim to make a video of this once i see this fault again. Since making this video Ford have released a repair solenoid so you dont have to replace the whole lock.(part number below).

Must be a common fault with Ecosports, we just got a used one from a ford dealership, it came with a 6 month Ford Gold Warranty, what a waste of time that is, first they want to do diagnostics which costs you £144 before they will tell you the fault and if the repair is covered under warranty, I already told them what the fault was, I told them I can get the part from Amazon for £38.99 and fix it myself thanks to this video.
Fixed my Ecosport today, got a new unit off Amazon £38, great video cheers 👍

hi there ! great video ! , i got a replacement solenoid for 27 pounds off ebay and fitted it in an hour , bit fiddly but not that hard either ! cheers !
yeah, since the video was released, Ford have released a solenoid for some VIN variants. But not all

I got same problem recently... repaired at Ford service center...they replaced the actuator which costs Rs 1700/- after calculating labour charges sgst and cgst , total repair cost Rs 2800 /-
Which Ford center
They should be fixing this for free. Ford dealerships know this tailgate is poor design and they break all the time.

Hello mate, have managed to reach the linkage from the inside and even when pushed all the way up, the boot doesn’t open! Any clue what might be wrong? Cheers!

Changed the actuator and the switch but it’s still not working but both parts are fine, we are only getting 5volts to the switch could this be the reason it’s not releasing the door

I just recently got this issue. I figured it was some type of motor issue on the trunk. My ecosport doesn't have the lock button on the handle. Hopefully, this will not be too costly. If anything. I'll try to fix it myself.
yeah exactly the same with my 2017, solenoid got weak, had to replace it. I've got a feeling that the next thing you would need to look into would be the engine blow by...
Have changed the actuator but the open button isn’t working though the actuator is, have tried wd40 but still not working so I have to change the button

Hi yes of course. There are 2 x T20 torx screws located at the bottom of the panel, once removed, the panel is quite flexible and can be grabbed at the top between the panel and glass. Then with a bit of force it can be pulled away. The solenoid is now available separately. The part number is given in one of the recent replies by myself.....thanks for watching

Hey mate, how did you open the cover from the inside? The clips are very hard and Im afraid the clips will be damage if I force to pull the cover. The pryer tool cant get inside.
remove the two lower screws then pull backwards hard and sharp at the top near the wiper, the panel will flex here to allow a good grip. The solenoid is now available as a separate item, within the comments here somewhere, ive put the part number.

Very helpful video. Have got the tailgate open now thanks to this. Do I really need to check the voltage / solenoid with a meter and bulb? Or can I just replace the unit? Seen them quite cheap on eBay.
Hi, its entirely you're choice, for what it takes i test the wiring as I work in a professional environment, so cant second guess. For you're info', the solenoid is now available separate, so you no longer have to buy the full lock assembly

How did u remove the trim off I've unscrewed the T20 but it not moving one bit
There are 2 screws at the bottom. The you have to grab the top near the wiper motor and sharply pull hard

Same problem here just mine starts to work again for a few weeks thrn back to square1.
My Eco Sport rear door won't open. I believe it has this same problem. It seems to be an on going fault with the Eco Sports and I was wondering would Ford do a recall because of it. No such luck. Ford told me to book it in for an investigation at £89. Then book it in for a repair and they may contribute to it, but then they may not

Cheers for the video,awaiting my replacement part from Amazon.My warranty expired in March this year ,typical,door switch failed yesterday !!.Just a quick question-Do i need some plastic priers to remove the rear plastic panel from the rear door as i presume that the rear panel can be easily damaged during removal....Cheers again.
The panel is quite flexible and I've not damaged one yet. After removing the 2 screws. I then pull sharply outwards at the top near the wiper. I ought to do a follow on video as I've found another way in

This is obviously an issue with the design. I am fully annoyed the dealership knows it happens all the time and still charges to fix their mistake.
If we just replace the cather/activater not the whole lock ?
since the video was made Ford have made the actuator available, but only on a certain VIN range

Thanks for your help on this. The only replacement I can seem to find is from eBay around £40 but all from Hong Kong or China. Would they be ok to use, or would I be wasting my money and time?
Ford now sell the solenoid, but it's finding a dealer open. 2169845 is the part number

It should be in the description or the comments. The part is from Ford but not applicable to all models/ages

I wasn't able to open the door cover, I thought your video will help me but you cut short removing the cover. I unscrew the two screws and pull the plastic board but it won't open and I am afraid if I pull it so hard it will break the something inside. Please help.
remove the two screws and pull outwards from the middle / top around the wiper motor, it will be tight but will come off without damage. Ive never damaged one

mostly he fault is caused by a weak operating solenoid, so you will still hear it operating, but it wont be operating the linkage fully
@@SYDiagnostics yes broh💯. I've opened it yesterday. It's locking hook has been stucked. I've sprayed some contact cleaner and now it's okay 👌. 💓

Why still say boot open after changing the latch?

I think it was warranty or extended warranty
Mine just had new parts just a month ago and now won’t open again just phoned Arnold Clark and waiting for them to phone me back. I’m pleased I’m covered with warenty
Dari model terdahulu, inner door lock selalu rosak, sbb komponen plastik, harap pengeluar model ini ambil perhatian serius dan mengganti bahan utk pengeluaran akan datang, disebabkan juga harga sebiji door lock terlalu mahal....

I guess you are a ford technician as am I. Do you think the quality of ford components and wiring looms are poor . There quality seems to be getting worse .
