Oh my God thank you this is the first time I happily laughed in a whole week after my sister passed. I love you channel I just subscribed. F****** Banger you are awesome!!! 😎🤟☘️
Nearby is the abandoned* Patarei prison which is a cool place. Unfortunately, they don't make tours anymore because it will be renovated and turned into a fancy place. * not so abondoned anymore since it got a new daddy who will renovate it.
I thought the structure was awesome when I visited last year, the locals were using the space to play disc golf, an event that was being played across the city that day. I have never seen anything like it, in all its spacious brutalism.
YES MY MAN..!!! Always a good when another BANGER DROPS 😜 What a DRERY TOWN THAT IS...🤔I bet it looks better at night 🌙 😊Appreciate the SHOUT OUT BOI...👍😁👍🫶🇬🇧
Also once known as Reval, reverting back to the older name of Tallinn during the 20th century. Name Tallinn is from Taani Linn literally Danish Town. Which is something in common with Dublin which was also a Danish town at one stage. Although Linn does not mean the same thing Linn being Town in Estonian whereas Lin in old norse meant bay. Estonia has a very interesting history going back to the middle ages. It was also governed by two Irish men one after the other throughout the entire 18th century.
Yes the Lin in Dublin ( Dyflin in old Norse ) did mean pool , but since it is we often refer to Dublin Bay I felt it would be less confusing to refer to lin as bay. I also avoided confusing things further, for non Irish people, by referring Dyflin as BlackPool. Even though the city's name in the English Language : Dublin comes from the Old Norse it is not called that in the Irish Language : Baile Ath Cliath or Town of the Hurdles. And of course I did not to confuse things even further that Duff is Black in Irish and the Dyf part of the old norse name may have have had some influence on the Norse men when choosing the name. Thanks for pointing that out Peter.
@KohaAlbert So Danish Fort echoes the original name in Eesti Keel whereas the Danish name for Dublin is echoed in the English language name but not in Gaelge. Names of places and families carry a lot of History. The two 18th Century Governors of the Province of Livonia ( which eventually came to include the Northern part of Estonia along with Southern Estonia and Northern Latvia) also have misleading names respectively in Russian : Field Marshal Pyotr Pyotrovich Lasy and in German language Reichgraf Georg Von Braun which completely conceals the fact that they were Irish Catholic lads born and reared in Ireland. German language also confused it further when they needed to clarify their roots referring to them ( not incorrectly in old German ) as being from Scotland leading to incorrect twentieth century refererences in Estonian and English language. The name of Scotland (Alba in Gaelic and Scotimaa in Eesti keel and Suomi Keel ) was called Caledonia by the Romans and was renamed by the Vikings and Angles to what evolved into Scotland after the Romans left what they called Brittania. The Romans never could conquer Scotland , settliing on erecting a wall bevause the Pictish people of Scotland were fierce fighters against the Romans. After the Romans left a tribe from Ireland named the Scoti moved into Alba/Scotland and so in the German language for many centuries the Irish were called Scots until presumably some German speakers went over to that part of the world and spotted the difference. The norsemen knew the difference calling Ireland Ierne but alsi knowing the Scoti tribe had moved into Alba/Caledonia. Meanwhile the Spanish and Portiguese continued to call Ireland something like Iernia melding the Old Norse name and the Roman name Hibernia. Interestingly Estonia was known by the Romans as the land of the Aesti and German language just adapted into EstLand which just meant the same. Of course Finns called Estonia Virumaa and Estonians called Finand Suomi.
fun facts: about Linnahall 1) it was used in some shitty Nolan movie opening scene (the one with reverse time) 2) part of it was also in constant use less than 10 years ago - there was a night club on the seaside end of it. it was burned down because of some crime business. 3) it has been depicted in an anime
Lol I was in Tallinn about a year ago and found this place, the snow covered the stairs and people were sliding down it on their asses and it was awesome, I had no idea what the place was when I was there. Cheers from Co. Derry
That graffiti at 2:30 freaked me the hell out. I still have nightmares of the first time a knight started trying to joust me on one of those robots in Tallinn. Obviously I had no chance against that professional and died, but thankfully I got better.
Honestly sham, go into the Estonian / Latvian countryside, the amount of giant abandoned infrastructure you will find, beggars belief, and trees, lots of trees
@@OileabhearMacAodh Yes the forests are wonderful and I often think it gives a good idea what Ireland was like back in the 16th and 17th centuries. Or England was like back when Robin Hood ,Marian , the Fat Friar and the rest of the lads were being merry and annoying the Sheriff
The future of the building has been in limbo for years. The city wants to tear it right down but i believe since it’s a listed building they’re not allowed to (for now at least).
Monument to evil. Estonian old man told me a story of how he build a secret radio to listen to finnish radio, risking it all for some tunes. He scaped as soon as the soviets fell.
GDP per capita of Estonia 31000 usd approaching average for the EU every year . One of only three western countries in the top ten list of education standard of 16 year olds. In 6th or 7th place just behind the asian leaders. Highest standard of maths of all western countries . EU average per capita 40000 usd. Not bad for a " toilet " which only emerged from Soviet paradise 30 years ago.
Any building that isn't serviced in any way for 30+ years is going to start falling apart - but it's more fun to lean into "Soviet engineering bad" am i right
Legendary stuff!

If you want to know what the inside of this building looks like, it features in the opening of Christopher Nolan's Tenet.

Shite guide to Talinn, not disappointed

Cool! This sounds like something to explore when I go back again for a comedy show in March!
"Linn" originally meant fort (now "linnus", and related to Finnish "linna"). Word "linn" got the meaning of a town/city later in time.
The Lin in Dublin means Pool, as in the body of water where the Liffey and Poddle rivers meet.
Yes the Lin in Dublin ( Dyflin in old Norse ) did mean pool , but since it is we often refer to Dublin Bay I felt it would be less confusing to refer to lin as bay.
