@@hazardlake4203 that's a beautiful comment on how if we didn't have these experiences in the past we can hopefully provide them to someone today or in the future. it gives me hope, thanks for the words.
When you strip away all the wacky and impenetrable compressed production, the post-J Mascis guitar whammy fuzz, and the overarching hyperbole that is attached to those said aesthetics for the last 3 decades, you'll find that MBV is basically a twee folk -pop band with beautiful melodies. And you guys pretty much nailed that. Well done
‘Twee’ is an interesting term which applies to many c86 bands (eg The Field Mice) but not late-period MBV. Folky, definitely but I think their true power came in burying their traditional folk melodies under all that hardcore sludge. The marriage of sweet/gnarly, masculine/feminine and gentle/raucous is why people have raved about them, not either component. The Jesus and Mary Chain and Velvet Underground before that are definite precursors, but MBV also brought a dancey groove, and when they rock, I really want to move!
@@MrMusicbyMartin I meant "twee" as a signifier of "simple, melodic, and naive," not in any genre-specific sense, and although I do know of the C86 stuff, I have heard very little. And while I may agree with you about their post VU/MaryChain perfection of the noise/melody dichotomy, I think most people (especially here in the US, and MOST especially 20 somethings who weren't privy to this stuff when it came out) are more obsessed with their actual sonic signature than their pop sensibilities. Hell, there are guitar effect that have come out in the last ten years that are specifically peddled (pun intended) to give you a "MBV sound."
