This is legit a genius genre crossover tbh. It's so creative and it's amazing that they were able to convert a 90s shoegaze song into a cute 60s pop song and make it sound awesome!! I'm obsessed with it
I think this is what a lot of MBV emulators miss - there are actually strong songs under a lot of the Loveless tracks, shown by the fact they can be recognisably covered in completely different styles
I sheepishly confess, that I always assumed that MBV songs would not hold up without the production, effects and whatnot. I really like being proven wrong, when it results in my mind opening up a bit.
I liked it when they played it live, one evening in 1945, with just a sister at her side, and only weeks before the guns all came and rained on everyone.
yeah I saw them with Isaac Newton, good old times. Then he kind disappeared. Last time I saw him he said he was busy calculting "gravitational force". yeah he was batshit crazy.
This cover is really clever, very fun. Highlights the lyrics too, I think. "When I look at you, I don't know what's real" is such a great lyric. It's over the top yet it so accurately conveys what it is to be completely messed-up on love--it's like the Beach Boys
This is one of the best covers I've heard in a while. I put it up there with Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" in the sense that Shonen Knife gave this song a unique and different vibe. I love when shit like this happens :D
I never thought that could exist a band able to coverize MBV (my favorite band ever) in an original and credible way. Well, it seems there is. Great job guys! Especially with such a beautiful yet complicated song.
How is it I can be a fan of this band since 2011 when I accidentally discovered the Osaka Ramones album. I've been to 3 shows, bought every album available in my country, and even imported Millenium edition from Japan and yet still... STILL I find a new cover when I think I've just about heard all of them (last one I heard was Michie singing Cherry Bomb)
Mind utterly blown. Loveless is my very favorite album of all time and this not only warps my perception of this track, it does the same for me generally about Shonen Knife. *KABOOM*
Saw Shonen Knife in their own full concert, with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee (performing Despacito 1 - 69) as the opener in 1759. The show was totally wonderful!
Intro] [Chorus] When I look at you Oh, I don't know what's real Once in a while And you make me laugh And I'll see you tomorrow And you won't be long Once in a while Then you take me down Then you walk away [Verse 1] When you say "I do" Oh, I don't believe you I can't forget it, no When you sleep tomorrow And it won't be long Once in a while When you make me smile When you lie alone from me Then you walk away Then you walk away Then you walk away [Verse 2] When I look at you Oh, I don’t know what’s real Once in a while And you make me laugh And I’ll see you tomorrow And it won’t be long Once in a while Then you take me down Then you walk away When I look at you Yeah yeah yeah yeah Oh, I don’t know what’s real I don’t know! Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while When you sleep Oh, when you sleep Yeah, yeah, yeah [Outro] Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while Once in a while
After nearly 20 listens in the span of 48 hours or so, I claim this to be the finest rendition of an MBV song EVER. Goodness gracious, this is an infectious gem!
I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Shonen Knife when they played OKC . They opened up for Nirvana and The Breeders. The girls signed a bunch of stuff for me and Atsuko told me I was very handsome. That made my night. Oh...and Nirvana and The Breeders both phoned it in that night. I did chat with Kirst what's-his-name from Nirvana. Cobain was in the Winnebage parked backstage sulking because he saw...gasp...draft beer instead of the good stuff.
Emily Quindlen Hi Emily...yeah you'd think it would have been great but honestly Shonen Knife was the only band that really put out the effort that night. The Breeders were sloppy and had trouble remembering their own songs. Nirvana phoned it in...big time. They were not clicking that night at all. Cobain was hiding in the Winnebago they had parked backstage ( HUGE vehicle by the way ) because he was mad about there being DRAFT beer instead of the good stuff. In fact I heard he almost refused to play at all. Kirst the bass player was really friendly. He came over and talked with me when the Shonen Knife girls were signing my stuff. The guy is really tall. I'm six two and I had to look up at him. I smelled weed on the girls big time. They were giggling and trying to touch my hair ( it was pretty long back then ). Through their interpreter Atsuko, the bass player, told me I was handsome. That was pretty cool.
jerry murphy SK NEVER "phone it in" and with the new girls, they seem to have regenerated Naoko, I love the original band best on CDs, but, live the present band kills it!
When Loveless finally got love.
but it sounds like sad love
nvm
this comment is really cute i love it
Sounds like happy birthday cake and happy love 🥰

I listen to this song so many times every day ❤it’s trust the best

Amazing that Shonen Knife actually makes their lyrics easier to understand.
That's a mindfuck right there
Wen u wake me down, wake me al da way
@@hawthorneaberdson7277 I no da way
Screw depression, this version is good.
this is the cutest thing i've ever heard
Rusty Baumeier - SK has a way to make any cover their own; probably the most underated band there is
I sheepishly confess, that I always assumed that MBV songs would not hold up without the production, effects and whatnot. I really like being proven wrong, when it results in my mind opening up a bit.
hi lev
I love the cute lyrics of MBV songs, well Sueisfine aside. Like Thorn has amazing lyrics imo
SK is known for an ability to make any song their own, when they cover something!
love covers with artistic liberties.. check out boards of canda's cover of beck's broken drum for another example
@@agdgdgwngo Who is Thom?
I got to see Shonen Knife when they opened up for Death Grips and Swans in 1586, and they blew everyone away. Amazing cover!
Christopher Dlouhy sounds like the gig from heaven and nice nick drake pfp
lmao
in 1586?!
I liked it when they played it live, one evening in 1945, with just a sister at her side, and only weeks before the guns all came and rained on everyone.
Yup. I was there! Great show.
Saw Shonen Knife supporting Sonic Youth back in the 17th century. God they're wonderful. Bear up Bison!
heh, no worries man, sounded sincere to me. was a great gig, they're still going as well!
なるほど、素晴らしい解釈だ
"17th century"?
hell yeah beethoven n shit
yeah I saw them with Isaac Newton, good old times. Then he kind disappeared. Last time I saw him he said he was busy calculting "gravitational force". yeah he was batshit crazy.
This is such a cute cover. Its like the music equivalent of teaching bunnies how to hug.
DUCProdt who did the original?
My Bloody Valentine did the original if you're still wondering!
I love this comment
@@nome3795 i do too
Saw Shonen Knife swear fealty to William the Conquer in 1066, they really tore Hastings up, great band, great cover.
If you were there, you know
i believe it but cant remember shit

So true!!!! The lyrics are incredibly simple, even childish in places but the songs verses convey love so perfectly
It’s about transgenders
Totally! Coolest connection
Best cover on the album. One of the best covers ever.
this feels like a happy ending
This is the version of When You Sleep I would play when I wake up
When you wake
literally omg haha
This is one of the best covers I've heard in a while. I put it up there with Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" in the sense that Shonen Knife gave this song a unique and different vibe. I love when shit like this happens :D
Reminds me of Yo La Tengo, this is really good!
🌸My Sunny Valentine🌸
Play this at my funeral.
Joel Hassig wow
Definite closing credits energy.
MBV done in the style of a Phil Spector production? Awesome! The Shoenen Knife have always been great.
Shonen knife is one of the greatest bands of all TIME and they kill every cover they do. The way they breathe new life into classics is unmatched. ❤
Revoltingly happy, yet I simply love it!
Shonen Knife is amazing.
This song is amazing.

cool interpretation. 60's girl group pop

This is one of my favorite MBV songs. Brilliant cover
such a adorable cover
I couldn't help but laugh when this cover came up on the album for the first time. It feels so out of place, but still great.
What an absolute delight!!

What an ingenious, generous and well executed cover! 5 billion thumbs up.

When I look at you
