This is one of those maintenance items that if you do it yourself it can save you some money. The filters aren't that expensive and you can see that it's not too hard to swap out, it doesn't even require anything beyond a pocket screwdriver.

OMG! Thank you! I have been getting charged $60 every time they change this filter! A friend of mine told me it was very simple, but I am one of (those) folks that has teck issues. I think even I can do this one.... HUGS to you !
I changed filters at 182,xxx miles. Honda dealer kept wanted $50 but I wouldn't give in and ordered filters from Amazon and thanks to your video I was able to change them. Not as dirty as video filters. I better go back and check the air flow arrow next week. :D
It is a good video. Many ppl don't even know these filters exist. Some ppl have nothing better to do than go around giving negative responses.
Just got mine swapped. Absolutely horrendously dirty ! Thanks to your tutorials I am cruising with brand new Wix filters & breathing easier:-)
Got yourself a new subscriber
Cool Beans Eric! Just cleaned my 2007 Corolla cabin filter and sprayed Febreze all over it! It was full of leaves and bugs...gonna get a new 1 ASAP. You rock! Screw dealerships.
Perfect timing for this video. All 1.7 01-05 are so helpful for me.
Nice! I wish you had more videos on the 2001-2005 Civics, they're one of my favorite Hondas.
Honda dealers try to get me to dish out $100 bucks for this filter change. I haven't done it yet at 170,000 miles. Looks like my filters will be nasty by now. Maybe, I can buy filters and try to change myself. Great, simple video.
Easy on the Civic. Changed mine a month ago on a S40. I'm still recovering from the procedure!
Thank you Eric, you got one of the most usefull UA-cam channels at all.
well I just learned that cars have a cabin air-filter...I never knew they existed till this video. Thanks Eric!
Have you done a video on killing window air noise leaks? Just replaced my regulator on driver side door and came out of it with noise out of that window when driving high speeds. Also, any videos on places you want to put some white lithium grease or silicone spray to keep the car lubricated? like anything for the glass guides or the regulator?
thanks for the info i just bought my first Honda, a 2003 Civic Type-R thats due for a service and this vid help't me locate the cabin filters, cheers Eric
cabin air filters: source of most mystery stinkiness and weird noises. This video IS worth a look.
Some vehicles don't even have a filter, but if your car has one I would not leave the filter out. That filter traps organic debris that mold feeds on, and having a removable part to trap debris is a good thing. My truck doesn't have one and I have to treat the air ducts with lysol spray to cut down odor.
I love watching your videos, getting smarter every video!
Excellent and detailed review. You covered all the essentials.
Yep, just did mine last month. Not hard mind you but a lot more work that this Honda was and much more time. Mine weren't that dirty though.
Very well done; the best of the Honda Civic filter replacement videos.
To see if your car has this, simply check your owners manual, some vehicles such as Subaru will even have replacement instructions. The replacement interval also varies from make to make. Subaru for example is 15k miles, not 30k.
On most VW/Audi, Skoda models from 07 on are placed underneath the glove compartment. Pretty simple to remove. On older models it's right under the window on the right side under the plastic cover. Even simpler. Intervals are 30k km/2 years.
wow, no mechanic ever mentioned this in 135,000 mis, til just now, it's not in the owners manual either, thanks much~~~!!
"your prize" 😄educational and entertaining!
Eric, can you do a video on adding refrigerant...if possible on a 2000 mercury villager/Nissan quest
$70/hour at a cheap place. Keep in mind a lot of these businesses have insane overhead costs to keep them in business, so when their cost of business goes up, so does the labor rate.
And this cabin filter job takes 0.2-0.5 hours, so it's not that bad. The real killer is the price of these filters, which can go up to $50/filter on some models.
But generally, easy stuff like this can be done by anybody and everybody. Sure saves a ton of money doing car repair yourself.
hahah 30k mile service. my sis just gave me her 01 civic with 240k miles i dont think the cabin filter have been changed since she's had it
Hi , my 2000 honda civic VP had dust coming out and i went to remove glove box and as i open the tab, there was alot of leaves and dust nasty stuff but no filter, are these specific year civics supposed to include one? What are alternates? Thank you so much
Yes, Eric finally worked on my model Civic lol hooray!
I have to do this on my 06 VW GTI. Buddy said it was simple, same location too.
NP. This was one of the first things I wanted to do when I bought mine used. Maybe RSXs have these, but I'm not sure.
Thanks, real clear. going to change filters on my daughter's car.
lol agreed, i remember turning on my 84's defrost on high after like a year and a ton of crap flying out of it hitting me in the face.
thanks man! great video, have a good one!
Can you possibly show us how to do spark plugs on those 4.7 Fords? Expedition, Explorer, it doesn't matter. It's always a pain in the ass getting to the last spark plug on the passenger side. I haven't found an easier way to do it other than blood, sweat, and tears.
Great Video Eric. but does this only need to be changed on cars with AC?
Eric this doesn't apply to this video, but could you do a video showing how to clean or fix GM's passlock sensor to avoid having the car to constantly relearn the code just to start the car. This would be an excellent video to everyone with this issue
Like with any filter, if its clogged it will reduce flow. This cabin air filter is used by the AC and heater
Unfort we don't have these on our tegs :( I already checked & asked Acura about this. My vents are always getting dirt trapped in them. Only way to really clean it is to remove the dash, take out the duct work, wash the whole thing down and reinstall.
haters who cant be as good as eric
Love your content buddy!!! Keep it coming!!!
In my civic 04, last year when I bought it, the car still got the factory cabin filters from Honda and they did 273k, they where dirty as hell, I replaced them last October
So much simpler than replacing the cabin filter in an '04 Pilot!
As a e36 m3 owner, I am very jealous of the simplicity of this compared to mine.
hey eric just wondering if you know about any problems about this generations civic (7th Gen 2001-2005), mainly about engine oil, do these cars usually burn alot of oil or does the oil pan gasket need to be replaced, im usually missing about a quart of oil after every oil change????
Great Job Eric!
Do I need the plastic housings
If you don't mind old and/or mildew in your AC system, no.
(Eric mentioned that in another video IIRC)
Sound like the drain for the evaporator may be plugged... Which would cause stagnate water to pool inside the box rather then running out the drain and/or also be leaking into the car... So check under your car and see how much water is dripping while the a/c is running on a humid day... If there is little or none, look up where the drain line for it is and fine something like a large pipe cleaner, or some compressed air to blow back through it and clear it out... Should fix the issue...
my 2003 civic ex had no tab in fromt of the filters. is this a problem, usual or do i need the covering?
I have a 95 Integra..one time I was cleaning my car and wondering where it was didn't seem to find it or know what it looked like..so there's no filter at all ? Have to remove the whole dashboard?? Thanks for the tip :)
Hey, love your videos man, why dont you do any videos with german cars?
A vast majority of car owners are unaware these even exist. When I bought my Mazda I pulled this filter out to change it, it was packed with so many dead bugs and debris, I had to destroy the filter to get it out.
@ericthecarguy, one quick question. Does a 09 Mazda5 has a cabin filter?
Eric can u do a video there u show what to do about squeeling windows, my windown does this noise when they goes down and its really enoying any tips how to fix it maybe a video ? :D
is it possible to get to the cabin air filter in a 2000 toyota camry? i've looked it up but can't find anything for a 2000. i've also read that the 2000 model doesn't even have a cabin air filter??
No wonder my car was so dusty when I blew it with air compressor..I sure could use a newer use car..would like a rsx/brz..just fixed my tegra star stalling issues..plus no ac..nut from pully came of plus ac hose had hole..also cleaned my injectors and leaked a bit of gas.fixed it.
hey eric, is it a bad idea to reuse the filter by cleaning it and flipping it on the other side?
even easier on 07-2010 accords. open the glove box, squeeze in the sides and pull down...voila there is the filter you pull out with two tabs
When you have your AC or air on, it goes through the filters, or so I assume... to clean it.
Love all your videos. Especially simple ones like these. Keep it up. And please once again I'd like to see some work on european vehicles if you can. =]
i bought one of these for my nissan, it was $20. at the same time i bought a engine intake filter it was $10. the funny thing is that they look identical, same size and everything. i wonder whats the difference
These are a pain to change on a newer VW beetle but once you figure it out it goes fairly quick.
i got a honda delsol should i check my filters for the heluv it
thank god i found this. my cabin started to smell like a grilled cheese sandwich
Why would you want to change it?
I did mine recently... 130k miles on the clock and it was the original CAF. It was gross lol
Actually with filters that dirty, I think glasses are totally appropriate!
He already has one. Search his channelpage and you'll find it.
Thanks bro 🙌 💯
Thank you so much brother this helped me out
You're awesome Eric
I never heard of a cabin air filter, what are they used for?
Does a 2000 chevy malibu have a cabon air filter?
Great video Eric. Thanks!!
Great video thanks for sharing.
Aloha
Great pal☝️🥂
I wonder if there are any medical studies on what is typically found within these old filters. That thing appeared way past its "prime."
nice, air filters that are easy to get to :-)
Thanks eric :-)
i lost one air filter and tray . what happen if i dont have one ?
Thanx- ( A drop light would be great!) :)
Thanks alot, took me no more than 5 minutes
This procedure is the EXACT same thing for the Acura RSX (2002-2006)
Is this the same for a 2006 dodge charger?
How much different is this from an 8th generation civic?
hes not only an Ase certified master tech, but also a Acura certified master tech. Meaning he specializes in Honda's and Acura's.
I wish GM still used these in full size trucks and SUV's
good job tnks for the video appreciate ..
Thanks man !
To save space i guess. I work with Audi's mostly, and all but the 05-11 A6 have 1 filter.
thanks for the tip
Another nice vid
It's curious that the Civic uses 2 cabin filters. I've done this on Lexus and Infiniti vehicles, and they only use 1.
Do all cars have two?
overlooked service item!!!
Thank you !
Man those filters are dirty! And to think my car doesn't even have one... O.o
Awesome, thx so much!
OH MY GOD!!!!!!! That old filter was nasty! Now I have to check the filter in my car, I am sure it is even more disgusting because I doubt the person I bought the car from ever got that changed
Ay I have a Chevy silverado 02 I Could'ent find the filter????? We're can it be
It doesnt have (need) one.
those filters must be pretty ripe in a smokers car,,
Now show them the filters for the 4th/5th gen Accord!
