    Awesome vid, always chill vibe. What are the ankle bands with the number, or who are they for? I found someone's dead bird the other day while running. It had ankle bracelets and a # band. I dug into it some, as I'd wanna know if I'd lost an animal, but I didn't find anything. Just curious if there's a registry or something.

    • @MeganTheFalconer
      @MeganTheFalconer  2 роки тому +3

      Thank you! Birds of prey are federally regulated and captive-bred raptors are required to have these bands for identification. Pigeon racers also band their birds for ID purposes but it is not required by the government. If the bird you found was a raptor, and you still have the band number, send it to me and I will post it in some falconry groups online that will likely be able to locate the owner. If you have any photos or know what kind of raptor it was, that will also be helpful.

Peregrine x prairie hybrids were actually a natural occurrence that was a result of the u.s. breeding population of peregrine diminishing due to the dichlordiphonyltrichloethane pesticide and was an evolutionary adaptation which enabled the peregrine to still pass on their genes to the next generation in a mixed brood.

    Megan, good morning. Can you help me out with a few questions?

  • @freedominusfriends
    @freedominusfriends 2 роки тому +1

    How do you keep them from attacking the birds and treating them as quarry?

    • @MeganTheFalconer
      @MeganTheFalconer  2 роки тому

      Although they are encouraged to chase birds if they choose to, my falcons have been trained to receive their reward on the lure from very early on in training. They know that when the lure drops to the ground, that's where the food is. They will often leave a chase to come back to the garnished lure because it is an easier meal than trying to kill something. Quite a different training method from what is done with the gamehawks.

    • @freedominusfriends
      @freedominusfriends 2 роки тому +1

      @@MeganTheFalconer Thank you, that makes a lot of sense that they are trained primarily as an abatement bird. I was hoping to get my Red-Tail into abatement but my concern is that it's too far along in her training to try and switch things up. There doesn't seem to be much for literature on bird abatement and the training process; but based off of your response the key is just to never enter her on actual quarry. Thanks again for the response, this should help during the training of my second bird if I can manage to find one.
      Respectfully,
      Chris

    • @MeganTheFalconer
      @MeganTheFalconer  2 роки тому

      @@freedominusfriends I'll also add that some brids are just made for abatement, and others are made to be gamehawks. My female peregrine started out as an abatement bird but her prey drive was too strong, she just kept killing stuff so I switched her over to being a gamehawk exclusively and she has excelled. Other birds, like Odin, love to chase...but don't really care if they catch or not. Birds like that obviously make better abatement birds. They are all so different. If you decide to get into abatement make sure you get a captive bred bird, as birds trapped from the wild cannot legally be used for abatement. Best of luck this season!

    • @freedominusfriends
      @freedominusfriends 2 роки тому

      @@MeganTheFalconer I was not aware that a wild caught bird could not be used for bird abatement. Thank you for that information, otherwise I probably would have found myself in some trouble. Like I said before, there doesn't seem to be much for literature on bird abatement but you seem to have all the knowledge necessary for people like me looking to get into this aspect of Falconry. I greatly appreciate you sharing your insights with me. Just curious, what is your experience with Merlins in bird abatement? During our time trying to trap one for falconry we witnessed them run off everything from crows to Bald Eagles and everything in between. Their small size implies that they would struggle with abatement but again we have witnessed them handle larger birds with ease. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience with me.
