Hi again everyone! Ready for another too long description?
Okay, so first off: Sorry for the quality of the speedpaint footage! I ended up using the Clip Studio canvas record feature for this, despite the fact that I ALSO recorded all ~15 hours of this illustration, myself, with Streamlabs, too.
I didn’t use that better quality footage because, despite being more crisp to look at, 15 hours is still 15 hours. And that DOES NOT look good when sped up to the degree that I need it to be while still being watchable. Plus, with the way that I draw, I zoom in and out a lot, and flicker between layers, and it just creates a visual mess that I worry may be dangerous or at least unpleasant for some viewers.
So I sacrificed the quality of that version, and tried to just zoom in on the areas I was working on manually with the Clip Studio recorded version.
Let me know what you think of THAT if you have any sort of opinion on it. Maybe even suggestions, or if you would prefer to have the Streamlabs recorded versions instead, and maybe just… dealing with the longer length that it would cause the videos to be.
This was ALSO a first for me doing a video completely unscripted. I did try to script this at first, but I always end up feeling more stiff than I'd like when I do that. I DO like to script things, but I always end up making it too long and then when I have to read it outloud, I'm not having fun anymore. But, by doing it THIS way, I finally DID have fun during the recording part! I love to script, and I love to talk, but I'm still not good at merging the two together just yet, you know?
I'll keep trying my best so I can keep things purely fun!

Awh, I love hearing bakudeku discussions and theories like this! If you're ever up for doing more of these types of videos, I'd definitely check them out. As for the topic of how bakudeku could get together, I also like the theory that Izuku might have realized his feelings for Katsuki at this point in the manga-- specifically when he thought his Kacchan was dead. Of course they're still fighting so Izuku hasn't had time to sit down and process his feelings, but I'd imagine seeing Katsuki dead was his "oh" moment. It seems Shigaraki recognized Izuku's feelings during the Kamino arc which is why he targeted Katsuki again in the war, and that's something Izuku would have to stew about.

This is my theory for how I think it could be cannon but not rlly at the same time but anyways 😂: I feel like they both have liked eachother since childhood but then when Izuku was labelled as quirkless Bakugou felt that he always thought that if Izuku ever got into UA that he would hurt himself or be put in danger and Bakugou didn’t want to risk loosing him because he couldn’t defend himself, but at the same time he couldn’t handle his own feelings and he was already friends with some Bully’s and they guilt tripped him into bullying him but he never knew it could affect him so much, but when he got into UA with a quirk Bakugou was shocked and surprised and a little mad because he had to cause him all this trouble just so he wouldn’t get hurt and now he can defend himself more efficiently

I definitely see this kind of idea go around every once in a while. I can see how it would appeal to some, but I don't personally like the idea of trying to sugar-coat Katsuki's past behavior or mindset. I don't remember if I said in the video or not, but from what I gather from the text/Katsuki's own words (particularly during his apology), I do think that Katsuki genuinely DIDN'T like Izuku all that much during some point of their shared childhood. I don't believe his dislike was ever BECAUSE of Izuku's quirklessness, but that DESPITE Izuku being quirkless he still had clearly heroic aspects of himself (determination, kindness, etc) that threatened Katsuki's worldview of 'powerful quirk = societal worth/ability to be a hero'. Despite his perceived lower status, Izuku still viewed someone of a more powerful status like Katsuki as someone who could still be in NEED of saving sometimes (Katsuki falling into the river and Izuku making a big deal about it being such a point of contention in his mind makes sense when you realize what Izuku's action of 'being the hero' of the situation implied to him).
Because Izuku still wanted to be a hero despite society telling him repeatedly that he couldn't be one, those combined traits made Izuku notably DIFFERENT from the rest of the people in Katsuki's life. Because Izuku thought of Katsuki as an equal, Katsuki (falsely) interpreted his kindness, admiration, and worry as contempt or trickery. Katsuki says himself that he didn't like how Izuku made him FEEL, and 'couldn't look at him for who he was' during their childhood, because that meant he would have to see the truth that Katsuki's quirk alone did not make him better than anyone. They were clearly able to be friends/playmates early on in life, but once they started to feel the effects of societal expectations start to weigh on them in similar but very different ways, the cracks began to form in their relationship. Katsuki got a quirk and Izuku didn't. Katsuki was praised and got a lot of high expectations put upon him, and Izuku was rejected by society at large and thus any attempts at following his dreams were met with mockery and scorn. The same system failed them both, just in different ways, and because they didn't talk out their issues with one another for so long, they continued to misinterpret and misunderstand one another until Katsuki finally understood that Izuku was never a threat to him, and that Katsuki was the one in the wrong.
Personally, I LIKE the complicated nature of Katsuki and Izuku's relationship! I like that their history is fraught and strange. It's more interesting to learn about and move forward from to me, because it feels like a bigger narrative payoff than Katsuki secretly always having good intentions but showing them in poor ways. It feels like it brushes off the most interesting and unique parts of their story by almost pretending that they never happened. Katsuki atoned for a reason! His story is majorly about learning to grow and change and really start to CARE about the people he is saving, and not just do things for glory or fame. He learns to get along with his peers, both by leading and listening in equal parts. He changed his behavior to be kinder and more understanding, but he is still the confident, loud, and honest person he's been since the start of the series. He's so much more reflective and open now, and he GOT that way because he realized that what he was doing before was not the person he wanted to be. Yes, he was influenced by society to have his old middle school mindset, but he still made those decisions in middle school on his own volition. He didn't mistreat Izuku because anyone else told him to- back then, he didn't do what ANYONE told him to! He LEARNED to listen and collaborate since then, but middle school Katsuki wouldn't let anyone tell him how to act (Just like Izuku wouldn't, either, including not letting Katsuki scare him into not going to UA).
I will say I agree that Katsuki clearly does worry about Izuku dying/getting majorly hurt due to his own recklessness. I definitely think that his whole "I want to keep him at arm's length" thing has to do with the idea that it will hurt less to LOSE Izuku if he doesn't let himself get as close to him. Sure, he'll train with him and help him with his quirk! But he still keeps his distance emotionally because of that fear of losing someone so important to him. He's been warring with that since he's begun to atone and change his behavior/mindset. But I don't think it was ALWAYS the thing that kept him from getting too close to Izuku, as his middle school self I think feared the idea of Izuku being BETTER than him in certain ways, and Katsuki not wanting to see/acknowledge that at the time. NOW Katsuki clearly has openly surrendered to the idea of letting Izuku into his life and outwardly caring about him, despite the risks of loving someone and one day having to lose them (Hell, he did it first! This whole time he was so worried about Izuku getting killed, and here we are now. He loves him so clearly and honestly at this point in the story, and I think it's so rewarding to see that open admiration and affection on him after the struggle to get to this point. Truly cannot wait till he gets back up and BKDK can FINALLY reunite and TALK!).
Oh my gosh, this is so long! Sorry for the wall of text! But I wanted to respond because I do think it's nice to see other interpretations of their relationship, even if I don't agree completely. I DO see the appeal of a more sweet, fluffy version of BKDK's history. A more easy, lifelong love is romantic in a lot of ways! But I can't get BKDK's dynamic anywhere else BECAUSE of the murkier details and misunderstandings that they have in the actual text. Headcanons and re-imaginings can be fun to explore though! Almost a 'what-if' situation with them. What IF they were just regular friends their whole lives? What does an uncomplicated BKDK dynamic look like? We could certainly achieve that in canon NOW, but what would that change if it were that way from the start? I'm sure there are plenty of fics that have explored it, but each one could have its own aspects to focus on for sure!

CURIOSITY: BKDK CANON!!! Horikoshi (the creator if MHA) posted an Oficcial art with Deku and Bakugo laughing and with sakura petals falling, what is a symbol of love of romance. And he CONFIRMED that Deku and Bakugo have a crush on eachother. I think he did it on an interview of smth, Idk, but there’s what he said:
“They are the main couple since the beggining of my series”
So it actually confirms your theory that Deku had a crush on Bakugo during their whole lifes.
Horikoshi most certainly did not say that, I know that for sure haha. But I appreciate the comment! I'm assuming that the art you're referring to is the Jump GIGA magazine cover, which, yes! Is very very cute and made my jaw drop when I first saw it because of how romantically it read. I'm so glad to see so many soft and sweet expressions on Katsuki lately, especially directed towards/around Izuku!
I'll always HOPE that they become canon, but whether it actually happens or is just a daydream, I'll always love the ship and enjoy my own interpretations on their dynamic.

My main problem with BKDK is the ideology behind dating your trauma, but I do understand and respect your point of view
I have to disagree with referring to Katsuki as "trauma" to Deku, to be honest. Deku has never referred to Katsuki as someone who traumatized him, and aside from flinching a few times in early middle school chapters, he's only ever been directly inspired and invigorated by Katsuki's presence, both directly and indirectly. Literally, from a storytelling standpoint, every time Deku has 'chosen' Katsuki in some way, he has only benefitted from it.
Choosing to save him from the sludge villain rewards him with a quirk. Choosing to imitate his moves makes him a stronger, more well-rounded hero. Choosing to tell him his secret about OFA has made him grow closer to Katsuki like he's always wanted when they were younger, and, again, made him a better hero through their joint training together. Deku caring as much as he does for Katsuki made him unlock two different quirks (Blackwhip and Danger Sense).
All this to say that, where one person may find it traumatic to date someone who used to bully them, another person may be able to fully forgive them and even grow to be their friend/partner. It all depends on the people involved, and Deku just happens to be a person who is very forgiving, while Katsuki is someone who is very willing to admit to his faults and step up when he realizes he's in the wrong. It makes for a perfect combination in this instance.
Katsuki also very clearly puts the ball in Deku's court about HOW Deku wants to handle Katsuki apologizing and atoning for the past, saying directly that he doesn't expect his apology to change anything between them. He's not expecting ANYTHING from Deku. He just apologized because he knew it was the right thing to do. Deku is the one who decides how they move forward from this point on, and he's STILL just as happy to have Katsuki talk with him and train with him as he was before. He doesn’t even mind if Katsuki were to still refer to him as ‘Deku’, despite Katsuki being the one insisting on calling him his real name now.
He's clearly and dramatically affected by seeing Katsuki seemingly dead on the ground, nearly losing control entirely and only calming down when he's told that Katsuki ISN'T actually dead and that they're working on saving him. Shigaraki specifically targeted Katsuki BECAUSE he knows that he is the closest person to Deku. It's clear that Deku has chosen to keep Katsuki in his life regardless of their past, and that he loves him very much, whether someone chooses to interpret that love as romantic or platonic.
Another thing I find important to note about Deku is how he very clearly sees Katsuki's positive traits more than his negative ones. And not by IGNORING his negative traits, either. Because he has made it clear several times, both directly to Katsuki’s face and otherwise, that Katsuki can be a jerk sometimes. He KNOWS that Katsuki can and has been wrong in his words and actions, and that he is not infallible. He just admires Katsuki completely, and I think that his admiration INCLUDES the 'bad' stuff. Because Deku says things about how he "runs his mouth more" when he's imitating Katsuki, and how he DOESN'T hate those things about himself despite knowing them to be technically 'negative' traits to have. He doesn't hate those Katsuki-like traits in himself, because he doesn't hate them in Katsuki, either.
He imitates every part of Katsuki because he loves him for who he is.
Overall, I think it’s just a matter of... Deku, as a character, chooses to forgive people. He chooses to see the good in them. He chooses to admire, imitate, and support Katsuki. Whatever their past was like, it's in the past, and Deku very clearly is the kind of guy who keeps his chin up and keeps moving forward.
If anything, I think that their past would be harder for KATSUKI to get over, rather than Deku. Katsuki may still feel guilty for a while, even though Deku forgives him. I completely believe that he’ll be able to get over it, too, and just keep it as a reminder of his progress, but I digress.
Either way, I don't see anything being able to stop these two from doing what they truly want, including loving and supporting one another. Their past can't hold them back because it's just not who they are to let anything stop them, and it's not what the overall narrative of BNHA is trying to get across, either.
Because in a story with such heavy emphasis on portraying different instances of characters atoning for past actions, as well as the many different instances of how people RESPOND to that atonement, it only makes sense that we see how some people choose to forgive, others choose not to, and others are somewhere in-between. You get pretty much every kind of reaction to responding to an apology/atonement through the Todoroki family storyline, and the nuance you see in the family’s varied emotional responses to Endeavor’s atonement is helpful in highlighting how Deku responds to Katsuki’s atonement. Deku even SAYS to Shoto that he believes that Shoto wants to forgive his dad. I believe Deku feels this way because he ALSO wants to forgive KACCHAN and is speaking from experience, or at least some form of understanding. He wants a better relationship with Katsuki, and if Katsuki is willing to offer him just that, then it makes complete sense for him to accept it with open arms. Katsuki wanting to apologize, atone, and simply be in Deku’s life is a blessing to Deku.
I can’t overlook all of that love and admiration just because of their rocky past as children, which they’ve spent the whole story working to fix.
... Man, I seriously didn’t mean to type this much of a response, but once I get talking sometimes the thoughts just don’t stop! Sorry about that! And hey, even if you still don’t vibe with my perspective on BKDK, that’s totally cool. I respect your opinion too.
