  • How To Reduce The Engine Noise & Heat In Your Smart 453 Using Dynamat Xtreme. Works In Any Smart Car!

So over on the Smart 453 Forum (Link above) we were asked how can we improve the engine noise and prevent excess heat coming through. We looked at a few different options and the Dynamat Xtreme can help solve this as well as not breaking the bank. It's also pretty simple and fun to install yourself!
At the end of the video (Around the 7min 30sec mark) we quickly show the sound difference between the two! When you're driving it does sound different too.
It's a great way to show how to sound proof / dynamat your car too.
This retrofit is available to purchase on the below link:

With new bluetooth dynamat, it sends the excess heat to the car behind you.

Has anyone done "Full Metal Jacket?" Is there a difference?

I covered the whole panel with Dynamat (using the kit from Advanced In-Car which is identical to the panel's size, shorter by a couple inches maybe). While it does reduce the engine's noise level, I'd recommend to keep your expectations low so you don't get disappointed. It trims some high pitch notes coming from the engine and overall makes it lower-tone inside the cabin. I can't compare results with the 5-panel layout displayed in the video, but I find no reason to go through this process when you can simply stick the whole Dynamat sheet over the engine cover and probably get slightly better results as well - except that it looks cooler and more "professional" the way demonstrated here. For a 40 pound upgrade, it is worth it, but don't expect it to up the comfort level of the car.

You will get a slightly better noise reduction if you go “Full Metal Jacket”. Mine was more for aesthetics but still offers a good noise reduction as the Dynamat helps prevent vibration on the panel.
You can go further and install Dynamat Heat protection on top which gives an additional layer of noise reduction as well as preventing heat from the engine to rise through. I think they say it provides 95% reduction in heat.

I noticed that the heat reduction with my full-on approach is actually great. The engine cover used to get real hot, now it only gets only slightly warm even after a 50km route.
As a next step for reducing engine noise, I am going to try (ordered already) a layer of Dynapad over the existing Dynamat. I will update here when I get it.

So, I've layered a sheet of Dynapad on top of the Dynamat, which covers the whole engine compartment, not just the metal cover but the whole surface under the boot, and it does make a very noticeable difference. Also reduced the tire-roll noise coming from the rear end of the cabin. Dynapad is not specialized to hot environments though so to make sure that it doesn't heat up I am also going to install a layer of Dynaliner between mat and pad. Maybe I'm going too far. Will probably post a video when all is done.
