I mean the craziness is what makes Dream Theater. Their 2nd album and Scenes from a Memory makes that obvious that complexity is their skill. Octavarium, especially the title track, is a masterpiece of complex playing, as well as telling an interesting story about their influences and how life is one big circle; The harder we try to be our own person is when we end up the most like our predecessors. No Dream Theater album is bad by any means.

Believe me there's much more bands that do technical stuff just to showoff, but Dream Theater is not one of them. Yes they make technical and complex songs but in a musical way, every element has its own role.. You just need to listen to the melody and forget about the calculator

i understand your point about the complexity... but at the same time, that's the flexibility of music, to extend the possibilities of writting. I love Dream Theater's complexity because I discover something new un every listening and it's fun for me to put attention on the details... What I didn't like sometimes and they have corrected lately, is that sometimes the song goes all over the place forgetting the main melodic theme and never come back to It, and a lots of prog bands have that problem, that's what I love of Octavarium, the main theme was well developed. they have improve their writting since then. I love your reactions btw, keep Up the amazing work :3 sorry if my english is bad, i'm Mexican xD

I enjoyed hearing your opinions about the constant changing of time signatures, even though I don't share the same feelings. With songs that have rapid-fire meter changes into odd meter, do you find that you can come to enjoy them after you've listened a few times and figured out the pattern? Or does it just lose you immediately?
For me personally, once I mathed out (scientific calculator, I know...) the section that alternates between 7/16, 5/16, and 9/16, I found that for me it became so much easier to really dig into what's going on, and made me appreciate the section more (I already loved the rapidfire meter changes, don't get me wrong)
I REALLY enjoy hearing people's opinions when they differ from my own, because it opens doors to understanding that maybe weren't there before. I applaud you for giving your honest opinions!
Last thing I'll say, is that when you ranted as Jordan came downstage with the keytar, the thing that I appreciated most was the PASSION in your voice. Media, whether it be visual or aural, having the ability to evoke such a profound response (whether positive OR negative), really shows both passion as a consumer but also the depth of the media itself.
(ps. I bought my Bongo 6 in 2013 and have never looked back.. except for a fretless Bongo :-) )

Frankly, I think they enjoy playing the crazy stuff and do it for their enjoyment. Not to prove any point. For me, it keeps me from getting bored. You are missing out. The Count of Tuscany, In the Presence of Enemies, Breaking All Illusions, and more. To each his own though. You seem to be way to focused on how many time changes there are. I can't even tell, when and what they are, but I can head-bang with ease to all Dream Theater. Oh, and Falling into Infinity is awesome too. Variety and different. Yet, still Dream Theater.

Awesome review. I love this track so much. It's probably my favorite of the long-form epics behind ACoS and Count of Tuscany. Slides into 3rd place just ahead of Octavarium. Not the most explosive in terms of instrumentality but it's definitely one of their best arranged long-form songs. It just flows...WELL. And the orchestral break in the middle is just so tasteful and appropriate.

distance over time is a good place to start. Black clouds and silver linings I love, but there are a few of the impress songs but off that album The Count of Tuscany tells a great story and is a journey with a nice slow Floyd style middle section.

Great reaction as always David! Distance Over Time is a good return to form for DT in IMO, as neither technicality or musicality is at odds with each other, it just seamlessly blends well. Untethered Angel is a great song to start from. Also in that album, Mike Mangini seems to finally lock into the rest of the band that, being a Portnoy fan, had me giving the nod to Mangini's delivery.

Given what you have said that you don’t like then I would say jump to ‘A dramatic turn of events’. Its still Dream Theater but IMHO has a more coherent SONG focussed writing and less flash for flash sake. Try the opener ‘On the backs of Angels’ and see what you think.

When they change time signatures it's a time to take a break and just listen and not think about it. If you can. Dream Theater just do that and It's a signature sound of theirs. You have to just let it go at this point. Back in the 90's when I discovered them I loved that they did that and I still love it today. Because I am a musician and they make some music especially for musicians. Which I appreciate.

I gave up on them about the same time for the same reasons. But a few years ago - i think 2019 - i heard the albumb "distance over time" and thats all i listened to for about a month. Most the songs are 5 minutes and could almost make it to radio...which i know some people might hate, but it was refreshing to me. Short, hard rocking songs, killer melodies and chops, beautiful guitar tone with short clean solos. Especially the songs: At Wits End and Barstool Warrior.
That got me back into dream theater a bit and i went back and found some great songs from other albums. Check out The Best of Times - its awesome. The last 2 cd's after Distance kinda went back to the spazy crazy boring stuff though...in my opinion. I dont want to have to work at listening to music.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the album, in Octavarium's defense, it doesn't have nearly as many time signature changes or complexities as most of the albums before it. My main issue with it is hard to put into words, I guess it just feels kind of sterile. When Dream Theater are at their best, I don't mind if the time signature changes every measure, cause if the song is good, I'll keep coming back and eventually I'll be headbanging without a thought of what time signature we're in.

  • @amaranthus4206

I would actually just start where you left off and listen to Systematic Chaos, the album that followed Octavarium.
The album for sure has some moments where they, as you would put it, try to be impressive. But I'd argue that Scenes from a Memory has The Dance of Eternity, and you love that album too. Systematic Chaos also has some great songwriting though. Forsaken is one their shorter, most memorable songs. I'm pretty sure you'll love The Ministry of Lost Souls, a very melodic tune. And the two parts of In The Presence of Enemies are some of the best I've heard from DT, although they have their lengths.
Systematic Chaos is actually my first bought and probably second most listened (after Scenes from a Memory of course) album from DT. Since I mostly share your assessment of their previous albums, I thought I might just as well put it out there. Probably not a suggestion you'll hear a lot, since I get the feeling it's a rather overlooked album.
Another suggestion might be The Astonishing. It's basically a Rock opera and I know you're not a lyrics guy and might therefore not care for the story, but you still might enjoy the format, which is much more focused on storytelling rather than technicality.

Wasn't really a fan of that album. They had some good songs on it (Lines In The Sand being my favorite, along with New Millennium) I just found the album to be very ballad heavy, and I was never a fan of Sherinian in the band. He just didn't fit, and he tried to hard to shape DT into his vision of what DT should have been. Luckily they dumped him and got Rudess, and went on to record their best album ever afterwards.

When I first saw that you were going to do a reaction to this I was like "hey I really want him to do this song so I'm really glad someone requested it and it won the poll". And then I heard the requestor's name and said... "OH MY GOD THAT WAS ME?!?" hahahahhaha
Thank you David, really good reaction there. The song is mostly played as is from the album (orchestral parts and all) so nothing was cut there.
On complexity, I respect your opinion, and it's probably the opinion of a lot of people that get put off from Dream Theater. That said, I think it's now an integral part of the band's identity, and some of us do thrive in that complexity. Now I do not claim to understand everything that they do, but when it comes to these complex parts, I try to understand the "why" of it. Often times, I find these complex sections of their songs as meant to take you through a journey of themes through the songs.
About their current drummer Mike Mangini, as a drummer I find him to be one of the most technical drummers out there. Even more so than Portnoy. He was a professor at Berklee so I guess that speaks volumes.
Mangini's kit is meant to be played ambidextrously (he plays both as a lefty and righty) and is laid out so he can follow melodic runs and plays either left or right side of his kit depending on key changes. He has a knack of making complex things sound simpler or as you picked up on, subdividing one time signature to give the impression of changing time.
Some people don't like Mangini and I honestly think it's because of his technical proficiency. He plays so accurately to the time that he can seem robotic at times. Also, I won't deny that on the studio albums at least, the drum sounds Petrucci (he took over Portnoy's role when it comes to the mix here) chose for Mike Mangini brings him towards the back, making him seem more lifeless. But on live shows, he absolutely rocks.
Now if you are going back to Dream Theater, you cannot escape the complexities in their songs. Mike Mangini has certainly pushed the envelope here IMO. That said, they do let their music breathe a bit more. A Dramatic Turn Of Events is a good place to start (their first album without Mike Portnoy). Probably an unpopular opinion, but The Astonishing (another concept album with a story just like Metropolis Pt 2) is way underrated, but musically it was a fun listen.
I do think their latest 2 releases, Distance Over Time and A View From The Top Of The World are some of their best works IMO. Maybe leaning on the complex side. The opening track for example of A View From The Top Of The World is mostly in 17/16, but the drums and guitars work their subdivisions making the illusion of changing time. There are sections for example where the drums would play on 4/4 under the guitar's 17/16 riff resulting in a weird 17/4 mashup that is just rhythmically wonderful.
Again thank you for doing this reaction. Cheers David!

    • @siredwardThe3rd
      @siredwardThe3rd Рік тому

Mike Mangini is in my opinion one of the greatest drummers of all time and the band was very lucky to get him to join the band (I mean, they had to do something since Portnoy wanted the band to go on a indefinite hiatus while he was playing with Avenged Sevenfold.) I really don´t get why so many people dislike having Mangini in the band but to each their own I guess. But That being said, although I love Mangini (he´s one of my all time favourites) and I´m really happy that he Joined the band when they needed a new drummer I´ll just have to admit that I think Portnoy (who is also one of my favourites) is a better fit for Dream Theater.

Great reaction, but from what I can gather from it one could think that you´re not a big fan of bands like Liquid Tension Experiment 😅but to be fair, their music is not for everyone. About the album you dare not speak of, Falling into Infinity 🤫 The band was not happy with the outcome of that album (even though they have spoken more positively about it in recent years) They were pressured by their record label to write more "radio friendly" songs and forced to work with a producer they did not want to work with (they wanted to produce the album themselves) They even wrote a double album with a 20 min song called "Scenes from a memory pt. 2" but were forced to cut it and bunch of other songs do to budget reasons and so the album could fit on 1 disc. From what I can gather, they were so miserable writing that album that they even considered retiring at one point, at least according to what Portnoy supposedly said in an interview once 😅
