      I still remember when I first saw Sonic as a keychain in the arcade game Red Mobile, and was intrigued by it. My favorite game in the series is still the original Sonic the Hedgehog. I rented the game back in '91 and was immediately blown away by the game's fast gameplay, colorful & bright graphics, the character's edgy design/personality, and amazing soundtrack. I later bought the game and took my Genesis to a friend's house who had an Amiga 500 computer that was known for its amazing graphics and even him, his brothers and cousins were in awe of the game. It's really hard to explain and express to a younger audience how fresh this game was in the early 90s; you did a great job with this video.

    I hit one of the worst depressions of my entire life in high school because I was severely bullied for my stuttering. So badly, that I would refuse to talk. I got back into Sonic because of the nostalgia my sophomore year and I used Sonic as a coping mechanism for my depression. Because Sonic made me think of my happy childhood instead of the pain I was dealing with. I downloaded Sonic on my iPod touch at that time and Sonic helped me deal with my depression. I will always appreciate Sonic for that.

      That name, "Mr. Needlemouse", is an american invention and a mistranslation of what he was called, which was Mr. "Harinezumi", which in full is just..."hedgehog". This is so pervasive that even the Sega 60th anniversary test had it as an answer, but Naka-san himself confirmed it was always just Mr. Hedgehog (so, Mr. Harinezumi). It's interesting to look back and see how quickly Sega rose and fell. In only 5 years Sega was already on the decline and got pushed out by the playstation.
    Microsoft and Sony which were the "newcomers" have been around many times as long as Sega was a big player, but Sega still has so much nostalgia power.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  3 роки тому +9

      Yep it’s interesting to think about! I remember that very few people had faith in PlayStation until it was finally released. A lot of people I know felt that it would be like the 3do. Filled with FMV games but with a billion dollars behind it. Meaning you can’t ignore it. In the end I think it all worked out for the best. Sony and others spends money building hardware and Sega appears on everything. Thank you for watching 🦔

      His flawed thinking was based on the common strategy implemented in japan where you make something high quality and overcharge for it but because it’s made in japan people buy it up then that money makes it to employees in the form of bonuses that are used to buy other overpriced things made in japan so that those industries can then send its employment base out to buy the next round of things made in japan the next year.

    Great documentary. I feel like unless you were there in 1991 it's hard to convey just how perfectly Sonic seemed to be timed to be just the thing everyone was looking for. I'm not even sure what to compare it to.. Wii Bowling maybe? I was an SNES kid but even I knew Sonic was impossible to ignore.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  3 роки тому +16

      Yeah exactly. Even though Sonic 1 is an awesome game the marketing push that helped wouldn’t have worked except for a million things lining up at once. It had to be 91. 90 would be too early and 92 too late and the snes had to be delayed, the price cut, gen X getting older and the culture changing and of course the long shadow cast by Mario as a challenge to take on. That scenario can never be repeated ever again. Thanks for watching as always!! 🦔

      @@_sparrowhawk Like he said, you had to be there. Really doesn't have anything the current state Sonic is in right now. Sega made a lot of bad decisions afterwards, which put an end to their days as a console manufacturer. And the over saturation of games these days, as made it tough for all 'mascots' of gaming.
      Sonic games may have gone downhill the last decade or so (with some exceptions like Generations for example), but Sonic himself is still an icon, especially to those who grew up with it.

      Sounds like a lot of mainstream UA-camr talking points (haha no offense) I don’t focus on those things and more on the experience each game delivers. I can certainly speak from experience that I was of the "one of the one system or the other" childhood, which gives me a weird personal history with the character. Sure, if you had parents with enough money you could have BOTH a Nintendo and a Genesis, and my cousin and my friend both seemed to have both, which are the only two places I was able to play Genesis at the time. Anyway, I was a BIG Mario kid when I was little, and frankly the marketing of Sonic basically taking Mario down instead of just building Sonic up turned me off of the character when he first appeared. But what made me love Sonic was the fact he had those cartoon series and comic books. Sure, Mario had those things too, and I loved them as well, Sonic just had a better media presentation. Look at how long that Archie comic series lasted vs. Mario and Nintendo's short lived Valiant comics line. And Sega, at least at the time, embraced Sonic's media presence when Nintendo saw theirs as essentially a commercial they didn't need to care about and nothing more. But because I enjoyed both franchises beyond the games, I learned that even if you only have an NES, you certainly don't have to chose between the two, you just enjoy them differently.

    The real reason the NES did so well is they monopolized the American market. They signed all developers to exclusive deals forbidding them from developing on other consoles and they bought up all the marketing to make sure American gamers didn't even know about the master system.
    They spent so much money on it that it most countries outside of the US and Japan you couldn't even get an NES. So in a lot of countries the Master System was the no. 1 console.
    In the end the NES had the most global sales this is true but it isn't an accurate description of the global gaming scene.

When I used to go and see my dad in Melbourne, he'd give me money to go and play games in the local video ezy. I always picked the Mega Drive because it was the only place I could experience a 16 bit sonic game. Those memories will always be with me. Years later on the Gamecube I was overjoyed to find and pick up sonic adventure 1 and 2 and was so happy to see the two rivals finally working together. The underdog rose to sit side by side together with the best, and that is an inspiration to all us underdogs out in the world :) Thanks for an amazing video mate

      @@protospy9597 This comment's a comical coincidence because I just watched both GTV and Gaming Historian's Super Mario Bros 3 videos recently. They're both good, both similar in structure, and both have a section discussing the methods Nintendo used to hype up Mario 3 in America. Both bring up the film The Wizard, a film that prominently featured Mario 3. In the GTV video, there's just a couple sentences acknowledging the film. GTV then discusses some in-game details & secrets of Mario 3 not in the Gaming Historian video. In Gaming Historian's video, for whatever reason he dedicates 5-minutes to the Wizard. Goes over the plot, the characters, the critical reception. It's all pointless filler only tangentially related to Super Mario Bros 3.
      I don't have much of a point, other than it's strange Gaming Historian is so popular when he's not even the best at what he does.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  3 роки тому +3

      I can’t comment on something I didn’t make but I usually go light on copyrighted clips to avoid trouble but what was the wizard but an announcement for Mario 3? Actually in September/October 18 when I was making that one I had to stop because I had too much going on at work. Way too much. So it’s kind of unfinished. But anyway if you watch the Mario 3, Mario world and this video you can see they connect and kind of make a trilogy. At least that was the plan!

    This has so much interesting information as expected from your content. • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  3 роки тому +2

      Yes. Exactly! Though the bubble is long over, some people still get 1 bonus a year. Not me. I’m poor! But like I said in 2013 the Wii was still 19800¥ and still selling! Hard to believe. The pricing plans also apply to TVs, rice cookers etc. you can’t get a bargain in Japan and people spend whatever the price is without blinking! There are price cuts now but that only happens when a new model or slim or S comes out. So technically each version keeps the same price for as long as it’s on sale. 2ds xl or whatever is still the same price it was when it was new even though it’s discontinued and stores just keep the price till eventually they’re all gone. Thanks for watching friend! 🦔

The fast gameplay with getting suddenly stopped by touching something I could often not react to in time was just frustrating for the 12/13 old me in 99-01. Growing up in rural Germany,, Nintendo was the natural choice and since buddies of my older brother had an adapter for Murican games, I even played FF6 although my English was mediocre at best during SNES times and learned through games and listening in on my mom asking my bro his English vocabularies.At age 12-14, it was good enough to enjoy fan translation of Jp games. And the fact that Sega of today is trying to turn Sonic into blue Mario and appeal to Mario's players is just sad, considering that Sonic's birth and success was possible precisely because Sonic tried to be not Mario. I was a Nintendo kid, but I remember being at my neighbor's house the day they got a Genesis in '91. Prior to that, the only time I'd played one was at my cousin's back when Altered Beast was the pack in. Still remember us all sitting around, the TV being turned up too loud and "SEGA!" on the start up startled us lol I ended up getting a SNES, and we'd go back and forth to play stuff at my place and theirs, but man, it was a lot of fun playing Sonic for the first time, and me, my brother and my friends all taking turns.

    Fun fact: the final boss of Space Harrier was actually named after Hayao Nakayama. It’s name is “Haya-Oh” and was originally exclusive to the home console ports (the arcade version lacked a true final boss and just ended after 8 rematches with previous bosses), but the arcade version was eventually retrofitted with the Haya-Oh boss fight when it was released in emulated form as part of the Sega Ages line.

    Greatest Memory was playing sonic for the 1st time on a original Sega Gen 1 for my birthday. It was a present from my uncle and by that time I was a bit older and can play it a lot better than when I was super young (maybe 6-7)
    But it was legendary experience and stayed up most the night to beat it. It’s my fondest memory of Sonic 1. From there I kinda jumped around (due to financial reasons) played Sonic and Knuckles then Sonic Heros then Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 , then eventually walked backwards and play Sonic 3D blast and Sonic 3.
    This is probably showing my age but between 2003-2007 I played a lot of Genesis , GameCube , N64 and SNES. Being from a small town and really had no interest in newer games besides Metal Gear, Splinter Cell and John Madden, that’s all I played was Sonic and Mario.
    Just experiencing all the generations at one time in the store was a amazing experience as well. Kinda going off into a tangent but Sonic 1 has a huge spot in my heart.

It's so wild to see it in a Sonic 1 promo, even in Sonic 2 it still didn't have an outer design, just the name and some interiors. Yet another great video!
    My first encounter with Sonic came with the Sonic Mega Collection (Lots of kids born in the early 2000s probably remember this one). I didn’t own it but my older cousin did and I would play a ton of it. When I got the Wii, I got almost all the classic games on the virtual console.
    I liked all of them but I played S&K the most. To this day, I still consider it to be a near perfect game. I also spent WAY too much time messing around in debug mode. I haven’t played a ton of the more modern games (I did not have Adventure or Heroes though I did have Colors and the Secret Rings) but I would like to get to those one day.
    Also, I cannot wait for that Phantasy Star 4 video. It’s such a joy to play. Ok I’m done now. Sorry for writing a lot. :/
