    Thank you so much for this much needed explanation Katlyn, to the people entering this world of finding a ghostwriter! It can be tough and there are some shady people out there. I was lucky to have my book written and published through a Houston Based company Writers Of The West and that saved me a great amount of time and hassle!

    This was very informative. I've never really considered doing ghostwriting before but I'm curious about it now, especially as a way to explore other genres and ideas. And I agree with you that ghostwriters shouldn't be credited on the cover as it's not their idea, they were merely the tool to get it written.

    • @Katlyn_Duncan
      @Katlyn_Duncan  5 років тому +5

      Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment, Arnella. It's hard to convince people sometimes that I don't want my name on the cover unless the client does. I wouldn't have had my hand in the book at all unless it was for them choosing me to write it. :0)

    • @ArnellaHobler
      @ArnellaHobler 5 років тому +1

      @@Katlyn_Duncan I suppose it would be different if the client only had a vague idea of the story, and then you as the ghostwriter came up with a masterpiece that becomes a huge bestseller. That's an extreme situation of course, but it's a case where it would be insincere of the client to claim all the credit.

    • @Katlyn_Duncan
      @Katlyn_Duncan  5 років тому +1

      @@ArnellaHobler Admittedly, I've done this! Early on, I had a few clients who gave me a few sentences and the genre of the book and I had to plot it out. I did submit in different milestones to make sure I was on the right track. But again, it might not have existed without the client and working with them, so I'm still okay with it. I learned quickly, though, that I won't work with clients in this way anymore. I prefer an outline or at least a fleshed out synopsis. :0)

I prefer to have you do ghostwriting as documentary about my distintively naive and tragic life, so I could pass on the story to my children and grandchildren to know and to learn from my strength or mistake that I have experienced - "Sin bad or Sin naive". This was really interesting! What are your favorite genres to ghost write? Are they the same as your favorite genres for your own stories? Do you think your tone is consistent in your personal and ghost writing? Or do you sometimes write more serious, comedic, romanticized, or gritty depending on your request? Or do you only write in one style and make sure you fit you client so your style can satisfy them?

    • @Katlyn_Duncan
      @Katlyn_Duncan  5 років тому +1

      So many great questions! Out of all the genres I've written I really enjoyed the contemporary middle grade books. They were a departure from my usual and very fun! I love your question about tone. Usually, when I submit for a job, they require a writing sample. I try to ask them for an example chapter from what they're looking for so we have the opportunity to discuss tone, etc. I don't consciously write "my" tone, I just write how the characters sound to me in my head. I've only come up against one particular client who I worked with to create the voice THEY were looking for. It all depends! I've written heavier heat levels in romance novels than I would ever write under my own name, but that seems to be the stark difference, I think. I tend to take jobs I'm interested in spending a lot of time with so I haven't come up against too many issues with the writing.

    Thanks for the informative video. May I ask a few questions, please? I have ideas I think would make awesome stories. No outlines, just ideas. Who can I bring my ideas to in order to fully flesh out the ideas, to pinpoint theme, to know my story's potential better? Will a ghost writer accommodate that or require that? I need help in that area. Is that a developmental editor or is a developmental editor for fixing drafts? What service, if not a ghostwriter, can I hire or speak with to discover what direction to go with my vague ideas. I am considering hiring a ghostwriter, but I don't know if that's the right step since I don't have much to go on other than my idea(s).
    I'm browsing ghostwriting companies and individuals but they are expensive and I wouldn't want to go through the process nor involve a ghostwriter if what I currently have as an idea isn't possible. Please, help!
    I am especially fond of the possibility of collaborating with the ghost writer, that way I feel, as the 'author,' that my ideas, inspiration and overall feel of the book is my own, even though I am not skilled or talented at writing. Besides, I know that a story should probably be written FOR the reader, whether that be to entertain, inform, inspire, etc, and if I can't achieve those goals because I'm too busy or too unlearned in the craft or differently abled, then a ghostwriter is a phenomenal savior and realistic paid service/trade to consider.
    I just don't know what to do at this point - I have the love and motivation to tell a story, but it can go in any direction and so I need help molding it into something, into the one something it will become, into the one and only thing it can be. What profession offers that?
    I have more specific questions, but they are probably best for whomever I end up working with/hiring, such as how can the ghostwriter match the style, voice, tone, pace, flow, atmosphere, etc, that I feel are important factors in creating my story's experience? Also, theme - while I have ideas that I'm excited about exploring, I need to make sure the theme is clear in my mind and in the mind of the ghostwriter so they can hang the story's elements on it. I feel that with all these gears and puzzle pieces where one can't work without the other, something is sure to get lost or left out or miss the mark when having someone other than me write it - so I feel (as a customer and person unqualified to write) that I am not only relying on an other to spin my tale, but I also feel like I'm settling or choosing a last resort.
    Choosing a last resort is not to offend or sound hard, but look at it from my, the customer's and storekeeper's point of view - I am trusting an individual, as skilled and talented they are, with my deepest essences. It's pretty frightening and there are a lot of concerns and uncertainties handing over my ingredients and utensils to a stranger chef! But, that is all that can be done if the story is to emerge because I can't write it myself. I hope in an interview I can gain a sense as to whether or not the ghostwriter will be thoughtful, patient, understanding and empathetic so that they truly care to write the story as close to what I have in my head and heart. I've never spoken with one, so I don't know how that will go.
    Do ghostwriters charge to contact them? If I wanted to see if they're a good match? I don't want to waste anyone's time, but I can't really afford to interview more than 1-2 ghostwriters.
    What are you thoughts on ghostwriting companies? I feel like I'd get put with whomever they think would best suit my story, which is great but also scary since I have no control.
    Lastly, do the ideas of the 'author' stay between the customer an ghostwriter, during and after the project? What about my discussing story details in the interview stage?
    What I'm worried about is - I need to give details about my ideas: plot, theme, characters, voice, setting, tone, etc, in order to determine if the ghost writer is the best ghostwriter for this story.
    How can I be protected and sure that discussing/divulging details when interviewing a ghostwriter for my story, that all my ideas discussed are safe? NDA for a discussion/interview?
    Do you have recommendations for chapterbook or MG ghost writers?

    • @Katlyn_Duncan
      @Katlyn_Duncan  3 роки тому

      Hi Daniel. It looks like you've thought a lot about this. For most of your questions, I would direct them to the ghostwriter you choose to work with, since working styles vary. A ghostwriter I would recommend personally is Cyn Balog. I did an interview with her on my channel if you wanted to check that out: ua-cam.com/video/tFarGdbayKc/v-deo.html. Also, you can check out Upwork and Reedsy for other opportunities to reach out to potential ghostwriters.
      That said, if you are unsure about using a ghostwriter, I wonder if you might want to reach out to a Story Coach versus a ghost, since they can advise you better on future options for your project. I hope that helped!

    I have a 200 page fantasy/sci fi novel, which is been written in a straight to point narrative format, i would love to find a ghost writer to stretch it out and put a lot of poetic detail to it all, expand on it like you said with subplots and character struggles, its a project i recently finished but worked on for years in a handwritten 200 page book, i personally would credit the ghost writer as they would be just as esstential to the final form as i would be for giving them the material to work on, im not a very rich person but i would put what i could to develop something to be psyically released, im also an artist whom paints moments from the story as well as character portraits, do you think things like that would help the ghostwriter?

      Hey Tony! I am not currently taking on clients at the moment, but some ghostwriters do help you fix your work. Maybe search on Upwork.com for ghostwriters to help? That is the website I'm most familiar with.
      As to your second question: There is no way to prevent anyone from taking your work once you give it to them, but this doesn't really happen. Once you write something, the copyright is yours and you would have email correspondence, etc if someone tried to claim it as their own. This seems to be a common worry among amateur writers, but it shouldn't be, since everyone has their own author voice and for someone to edit, upload, promote, etc your book as their own is an arduous process and just doesn't happen. I hope I've eased your mind a little? Best of luck on your story.

      Depending on if by a synopsis you mean a blurb or pitch to “sell” to companies OR a professionally laid proposal to send to companies, you will likely want to find a ghostwriter who states they specialize or are experienced in such proposals, just like people who already have their book written but want to submit it to publishing companies often look for ghostwriters to write their proposals.

      Ghostwriters pay rates are wildly different based on experience levels and projects. I would take a look on Upwork or any other freelance sites to see what others are charging and find one within a budget you can afford.

      @@Katlyn_Duncan a lot of sites require several forms of ID, such as driver's license, SS number, TIN number, so I'm just wondering where I can find other sites that aren't so regulated.

    This is really cool! I'd love to try ghostwriting at some point. I know a lot of celebrities have ghostwritten books, and I know a lot of the Sweet Valley books were ghostwritten, but I didn't know the Babysitters Club had ghostwritten books too! haha i went to a panel with Ann M Martin at BookCon one year and she never mentioned that -- though I guess she mostly focused on her process for the first few in the series, probably before that happened. I have a teacher who ghostwrote for a few celebrities and our class was always trying to figure out who t hey were, but she was unbreakable! Those NDAs are powerful!

    • @Katlyn_Duncan
      @Katlyn_Duncan  5 років тому

      From what I read, she did write like 30-40 of them herself and the rest were ghostwritten/co-written. So Ann definitely put herself into the series for sure!
      And yes, NDAs are powerful. I always get questioned by my family and friends about it but my lips are sealed. It's probably more fun for me than them LOL

      In my experience, yes. Either before the job is contracted, or after, I've had conversations about the vision for the project. Ultimately, the ghostwriter will try and fulfill what you are looking for so I would say transparency is key.
