From other channels, the purpose of the tube is that it removed a few days later after some settling. The hole it created after removing would aerate the middle .

This is an awesome idea that is small and neat. I happen to have a constant supply of food scraps and rabbit poo that I will have to try this system out with.

Walk around the neighborhood and find leaf mold and cut branches that people just leave on those side roads. Brown will never be a problem for me, and green just comes right from my kitchen ^_^ trust me, no one's ganna be mad that you're cleaning up the neighborhood.
Compost availability can still be an issue if you use a lot even when it is readily available. I have a 30 ton truckload arriving today, and another on Monday. I do need to talk to the neighbor about if I can have some of their manure though so I can hopefully make enough compost for my own use...
For those wondering where to get enough compost material. If you live in the city like me grass clippings and leaves are overflowing. If you don't have enough hit up a couple of your neighbors that's what I do.

Doing mine but don't have center pipe yet. They are barely warm (40F) when it is 32F outside. I do have air holes (about 1") in the sides too. About every 2 weeks I rotate between the cans, fluffing up and aerating the soil. STILL not heating up after 4 months. I need that compost in about another 6 weeks or so. Not sure it will be ready in time.
Ive always thought that you need a big pile to get the insulation for the bacteria temp sweet spot. I have two mesh rings, they are about 1200mm wide, 900mm tall. I turned one of them into a johnson-su bioreactor in September. The other one im filling with a mix of kitchen scraps and lucerne hay/garden weeds. Im hoping I can get away with just 2 big piles, i think ill have to leave the maturing pile for another 8 months or so. Would be great to see an experiment on the trade off between a bigger bioreactor vs one of these trash bin ones you are using Diego. Does a larger pile decompose faster? Love your work A
What temperatures do they reach? I tried this a few years back and they hardly warmed up. I need them to kill the seeds under them. My pile is currently at 138F under the snow.
I can get all the horse manure I want from a local stable. Works great and they are happy for me to take it. :) I do need to setup additional bins this spring once winter starts to break and temps get back into the low 40s.
Before you get the manure, I recommend you ask the stable owners if the pastures are sprayed with aminopyralid (aminopyrlid is a broad leaf herbicide). If the answer is yes, then you don't want that manure in your garden. OAG

Free sources. The local grocery store produce department. Most Produce Managers are willing to let you have the trimmings. Believe me your local hog farmer is already way ahead of you..
I use a 55 gal. drum with holes drilled everywhere. It takes some work to roll it around every week or two, but it's good for me. I can get compost every three months. One month to build, and two months to cook (approx.).
@@nickieserdyn1111 I just drilled 1/4” holes every six inches or so. Does not need to be perfect. Top and bottom, as well as the round sides. I used a poly drum I got from work. Clean of course. The top of the drum is removable. That is where I fill with shredded paper, grass clippings, kitchen scraps, plant trimmings, etc.
Did you do a follow-up video on this method yet? I am curious to find out if it is necessary to turn the compost over every month or so. I was originally going to buy a compost tumbler or make a compost tumbler out of barrels, then I was going to build a large johnson-su bioreactor like in your videos, but now I think I should definitely start with this method because I have lots of cheap trash cans that I bought at Lowe's laying around. I mainly use the cheap trash cans to put my leaves out by the road to be picked up by the town during the fall. I might as well use them to start composting some grass clippings this summer and expand into composting leaves this fall. I will still probably end up building a few large 5 foot tall johnson-su bioreactors this fall to handle my large volume of leaves.
Diego our subscriber I’m trying to make as much compost as possible what I don’t understand about this method is why not take all of my manure pile it up create a big hot pile and let it all finish all at once - and then just take as I need as the time goes on?
You could. I think a lot of people struggle getting that much biomass at once and managing the pile. You are still going to need a series of piles because eventually the big pile runs out. So space might be an issue of managing multiple big piles.
Horse manure has a lot of weed seeds in it that will sprout. For some reason, cow manure does not. If your compost doesn't hit 150 degrees, it won't kill the seeds and you will introduce a ton of weeds to whatever you decide to use the compost for.
It will work. The composting process would slow down a lot below freezing but it will start right again once it's warm enough. So you won't get compost every month and have to be very patient but it will work😊
Man I wish I had room to make more than just one pile. I might see if I can at least have two. I all so have a composter that is a bear you turn it works great.

I think this one has been as high as 120. If you were going for heat, that may tough in such a small volume.

Is there a minimal size of bin that can be used? I’m looking to use three or four 50L food safe bins
I've had stuff compost in a 1 gal counter bin, there is no too small. Just stir shake or flip occasionally so it aerates.
@@ferrous719 I ended up using 80l bins with plastic tubing, the bins and tubing have a bunch of holes. I used a drill and soldering iron.

There are a lot of broad leaf herbicides in the horse feed and it ends up in their manure and will kill your plants. It is a big problem.
I building my chicken coop. I plan on composting in garbage cans. And in place in the run.
How long before one could use the contents of the trashcan, do you know?
Depends on what goes into it and the outside temperature. I would think at least 3 months.
