22:15 as a bilingual who learned English purely to just share my character stories, she’s very wrong about the fact that people of a language are locked into one place! I am an Arabian Muslim, many of us learned English to watch the movies without subs, because the language is much less complex than Arabic, and the media has much variety, it’s not too difficult lol
I was raised in a home where no one speaks English and I, after learning, find myself thinking in English most of the time instead of my own language. I didn't even notice how much I spoke English out loud until I started dating my boyfriend and he was like 'you sure you weren't raised abroad?'
@@letterborneVods I dunno if I'd say it's the easiest. It has a lot of nonsense pronunciation rules and letters we don't properly use. I found Japanese very easy because what is written is what you say (in Hiragana anyway). Lot's of people have good reasons to struggle with English and there are other languages with more consistent written and speech rules that are probably easier. Don't downplay the skill of learning a language, just because you found it easy, or it suited you. (Although it being easier than your own language is valid, obviously.) :)
@@qwandary good point. I just thought it was easier to learn compared to all others I learned, but there’s definitely easier languages and it’s all subjective anyway. (Edit accidentally wrote ‘harder’)
If I was to write book two, I'd go for the double-whammy of plot twists: this "Anti-Christ" bringing peace to the world *would* actually be the Second Coming. Ironically, the cult this book is centered around would eventually be left behind at the Rapture, specifically because they're so arrogant as to believe God favors them especially...and because they're awful people. The book would end with them being literally the last people on earth--they finally are free of the heathens and infidels and false Christians, and they are all alone.
@@RFEM520 I’m no good at writing fiction-but unlike Debi, I know that and act accordingly. Feel free to use the above framework, anyone who has more talent and interest than I and is reading this.
as a german, I can confirm Debbie's theory that it's definitely the lack of availability of christian content on the internet in my native language that is the only thing in the world keeping me from joining their cult. That's a very accurate assessment on their part. yup.
You mean the internet doesn’t automatically translate the words into your language? The outrage. Seriously though, people like Debbie can’t see beyond their noses.
As a Christian, it really weirds me out that they wrote their own version of the Bible and are touting it as more important and better than the actual bible. There are tons of Bibles out there that include simpler versions of the language to help you understand what is going on, but I’m kind of horrified imagining what the Pearls added or took out of it.
Its so invalidating when people make comments like "but its your family" like we haven't agonized enough with the decision to not have them in our lives. I havent spoken to my mom in 3 years and it hurts every day but not as much as having her in my life did. You don't have to keep people in your life who make you feel less than, thank you for saying that. I appreciate your takes on these books and enjoy your content 💜
Agreed the best thing I ever did was cut my mother out of my life. I haven’t seen her in over twenty years and I am better for it. The last strew was when she cleaned out out family’s bank account during my parent’s divorce when I was 16.
I also can relate. My brother was very emotionally abusive to me but my Mom especially wants me to reconcile with him because he's my brother. I refuse to do this since I don't need that toxicity in my life.
As someone who also doesn’t talk to their parents as much as possible, I HATE HATE HATE when people try to shame those who choose to distance themselves from their toxic families. We do not owe anything to the people who abuse us. We DO deserve happiness. People never consider how much guilt and mixed feelings we already feel after having been forced to cut off the people who were supposed to protect us and love us unconditionally. Blood is worth nothing, it’s relationships that matter.

The way the women in this book get so envious and insecure when one of them "gets a man" is really telling of the way Debi sees other women. They're just competition to her. I once took a horrible job editing a book about fasting/cleansing in which the author tried to claim that fasting could "cure" homosexuality [which is caused by demons, btw /s]).
It's really strange to think that people like Debbie are more than happy to write racial slurs in their books but feel like they have to censor out words like hell and dam. Debbie: “People in Latin America don’t know Christianity enough” Me, from Latin America and an atheist for the past half of my life: *Sometimes caught myself involuntarily making the sign of the cross when driving past a church as to not disrespect the god, which I don’t believe in, because that’s how ironclad the grasp of christianity is on people’s consciousness and on the overall culture due to - to call a spade a spade - how psychotic the degree of the indoctrination is since early childhood* American evangelicals DREAM that they could have the widespread influence and overall weight over society as churches - mainly, The Roman Catholic one - have down south. If they knew, I don’t think they would cope with the envy. The ones who do use the “syncretism excuse” to say that actually, that’s still paganism - Which is just adorable. Unlike, of course, their version of christianism that famously never capitulated to European paganism and adapted some of its costumes. That never happened. If your Christmas is on December 25th, guess that’s the same as Sun Worship, buddy. No. Nobody would sincerely make that argument, specially fundamentalist christians. Well, unless if you are LDS I suppose. So can’t my grandma have some Santería on the side? She’s still a huge fan of JC, she loves the guy. Frankly, I think even more than you Debbie, you grifting heartless ghoul.
Panicking at barely 20, that no one will ever love them sounds like a person, who was never loved, not even by their parents. It's quite tragic to think about it, and with an early marriage they probably will continue the cycle of abuse. Truly sad.
What always baffles me is how these people think if they came face-to-face with this God that they all worship, they really think that it would be happy with/reward their behavior even though their behavior completely ignores everything this God is supposedly trying to teach them through The Bible. I'd kill to be a fly on the wall for the Pearl's final judgments.

Several things: 1. I noticed that the cover looks terribly edited. That or my eyes are worn out 2. If these women in the book are so worried about babies and fertility, just store the eggs. Or adopt. 3. I remember family guy making fun of the "you don't have to be a good person to get into heaven," which that phrase is stupid since, I think, there are stories that have the good person get a better life then the bad ones, no matter if they're Christian or not (but it's been about a bit since I last read the Bible) 4. Every bad Christian media is making me want to write a good story about God, just to prove it's possible.
Calvinism is the "you don't have to be a good person to get into heaven" sect of Christianity. The main difference between Calvinists and even other Protestants is just that: they extremely believe in "grace by faith"; it doesn't matter how bad a person you are and what you do, so long as you believe! They're the Disney villain "redemption" of religions.
30:32: thank you for speaking this truth. Kids don’t owe parents a darn thing. Just to live their best lives, if anything. Not at all surprising that Debi thinks hating Jews is a character flaw IF THEY'VE CONVERTED TO CHRISTIANITY, but there's nothing wrong with hating Jews who are perfectly happy being Jewish. Bigotry is only bad if it's against "one of the good ones."

This is one this is what happens when narcissists become famous in their own right. They have a bunch of yes men around them, Which makes them feel like they are experts in everything. Even writing a book.
I've been a professional translator for many years. I'm only 20 minutes in and I have a feeling this book will manage to offend translators as well... Which would be quite the achievement because we're cool people too!
This book reminded me exactly why I did not like Christianity as a child. I did not want to go thru the first communion (is that the right word? Had to translate it) I was really adamant on not going. I thought that it's weird that people are fearing someone who's supposed to be good. Why would we need to get through so many rituals just to be acknowledged by someone who's supposed to love everyone. Thankfully my mom was really cool with it and did not force me to do anything. Honestly my mom is probably why I don't have any religious trauma. If I was left with my gramma I'd definitely HATE Christianity lol
Exactly, this is the thing that has always boggled my mind about so many forms of christianity, so often the god they depict seems like a manipulative narcissistic asshole so even if I believed god existed why on earth would I choose to dedicate my life to a being with such ridiculous expectations of it's followers and such a willingness to inflict cruelty on people for not somehow knowing they are the one true god.
The mixed up words really are hilarious. There's another one I've spotted in one of the pages you showed. In the text it refers to "Arians". No doubt, Pearl wanted to write "Aryans"; Arians on the other hand are (or rather, were) adherents of Arianism, one strand of Christianity in the early church.
I used to be apart of the Christian church, Methodist to be specific. But I have no idea why so many Christians have became so…materialistic. Isn’t greed and pride like two of the seven deadly sins? In fact, I am taken back by how sinful this couple is. No joke, they both display all of the deadly sins: -Greed, for intentionally hobbling their products’ availability just to make them profitable. -Sloth, expands off of Greed, has the potential to give out free bibles for accessibility, but doesn’t because it doesn’t benefit them. They only help people when they feel like it. -Lust, from the “love story.” -Wrath, they blow up on anyone for very minuscule nitpicks and just act outright abusive towards Cheyenne. -Gluttony, they indulge in their wealth and high status, not sharing basic things with people. -Envy, they judge everyone with prejudice and judgement, just for the things the Couple don’t have. -Pride, the failure of both to recognize their faults and condemns both to the cycle of the seven deadly sins. Debi Pearl says that this is the ideal Christian family. But in reality, it’s the opposite. This all but ensures them a park bench in Hell.
as someone else already pointed out it's because they stem from the swiss-stemming christian sect of Calvinists who think that their fate is predetermined and that God shows his favour to you in life by bestowing material wealth onto you. That system is the very embodiment of the american dream in a "it doesn't matter how you got wealthy, but if you are, you must be one of God's favoured" way. Thus creating an Ouroboros of "I preach, so I make money - if I have money, I must be right" self-asserting feedback loop. No matter if the message is moral or even consistent with the actual christian faith they claim to represent.
It's literally because Rich Conservatives intentionally started paying for preachers to teach their believers than rich people and laissez faire politics are more Godly. Also, as could be seen in the Bible, all power structures - religion included - have a tendency to lionize the rich and powerful.
Taking a UI/UX design class and holy pascal that sword searcher just made me recoil away from the screen in my seat! A search engine shouldn’t be making you go cross eyed! Also…if I’m using a databank called “sword searcher” it’d be used for buying cosplay swords.

On the topic of slurs being uncensored, Ben Shapiro does the same thing in his books. But it feels more angry and desperate with how he justifies it. Personally I think it's a venting thing. They need to say these words and it's the only way they can justify it.
it's baffling, isn't it? After all the Bible is available for free in countless text file variants and you don't even have to use their edited version.
i know exactly what you mean, the small bits i have shared with people, i have been told to stop playing the victim. That i'm an adult, i should get over it and not speak of family that way when i have barely said a thing. And going into adulthood it had made my choices in relationships with friends and partners not good choices. i'm learning now at the age of 37 what kind of life i was truly missing. i have a wonderful friend and partner and if i never met a single other person i would be okay. i find you such a strong, sensible, smart and talented young woman and i thank you for sharing your greatness with me.
Calvinism is also sometimes referred to as the "Reformed" faith or church because it came after the initial Reformation, instead splitting from the Catholic Church directly instead of being an off-shoot of Lutheranism as most other Protestant creeds are. It started in part as a reaction to early forms of Protestant movements that “didn’t go far enough.” John Calvin basically considered having fun as inherently sinful, a slippery slope to eternal damnation. The Puritans of England were essentially Calvinist in ideology, for example; the Pearls and Duggars merely represent the survival of the sect into the modern age. It is through the Puritan connection that we have the Evangelicals, Baptists, and other "New World" sects popular in the Bible Belt of America. Calvinists believe in predestination-basically, God’s already laid your fate for you; you can’t make your way into the kingdom of heaven, only lose that privilege. Faith is the only part that matters, good works are completely irrelevant (in constant, the Catholic Church espouses faith and good deeds in tandem, while many other forms of Protestantism just emphasize the first without writing off the latter). Free will exists, but we are all inherently sinful. They also have the whole "the Lord works in mysterious ways" thing, where every single act on earth is some representation of God's will. Following from these fundamental beliefs, it makes sense as to why the Duggars and Pearls are so "forgiving" (ie, don't care about being held responsible for their actions); the only thing that matters is Faith, you can be literally the worst person who ever lived but can still get into heaven by belief in Christ. If that sounds contradictory with the whole obsession with sinfulness, that's because it is; but these people already believe they have a free ticket to heaven just by believing, and you don't. Thus, they tend to espouse a "sins for thee, not for me" attitude.
@@raydgreenwald7788 You’re thinking about this too critically-to the Duggars, there’s no question they’re already part of the Elect. To doubt this would be to doubt their entire view of the world.
A decent summary, but I think it misses out on a lot of the issues regarding "Total Depravity," "Limited Election," and "Perseverance of the Saints" which are all essential to understanding where these things come from.
23:15 I don't think mention of internet cafés in 2009 is very surprising. When I visited the Czech Republic in 2005, I used an internet café every day to keep in touch with family. It might be slightly anachronistic by 2009, but if so, not by much. (Shoutout to Milk internet café in Prague. Sadly, they seem to have gone the way of the dodo. Or perhaps their website isn't in English, so my search can't find it.) That said, I have never heard one called a "web café."
I don't think you can overstate the level of Islamophobia in the USA during this time. A lot of the conversations in the book remind me of conversations I legitimately remember hearing when I was a kid. For instance, when Obama was first elected in 2008 there was a widespread conspiracy theory that he was secretly Muslim and would usher in Sharia Law. I can't say I abstained completely, but I wasn't quite as bad about it as some people I knew. I remember being disgusted and calling out a friend for joking about whether we'd be safe getting on the same rollercoaster as a Muslim family who was in line behind us. The grocery store scene is basically the someone's imagining of comments like that being well founded
Can we have a moment of thanks for Kyra. Breaking up the insanity of Debbie with her adorbs so we, and especially Rachel, don't get as overwhelmed by the awful.
If i were to make a sequel, I eould probably make the twist that God was actually testing to see if humans would be kind and generous to eachother without his intervention, and that the anti-christ is actually the good guy while the characters we've been following fail the test
"They attempt to supplant Christ by presenting the world with a counterfeit Christ. [...] People will believe [the Antichrist] is truly Christ because of his great kindness, generous heart, and ability to bring peace to so many nations." Well, now the actions of the Christian characters in this book make a lot of sense. They're trying to make sure they don't act like an antichrist.

It honestly gives me vibes of a little kid in America thinking all of Europe is still in the medieval era.
True, English really is the easiest language, I find myself also using it quite a lot in many different places to avoid other languages I know.
(Although it being easier than your own language is valid, obviously.)

And then the world they're left behind in actually turns out to be hell because they're all terrible
I’d read that.

Debbie: “People in Latin America don’t know Christianity enough”
Me, from Latin America and an atheist for the past half of my life: *Sometimes caught myself involuntarily making the sign of the cross when driving past a church as to not disrespect the god, which I don’t believe in, because that’s how ironclad the grasp of christianity is on people’s consciousness and on the overall culture due to - to call a spade a spade - how psychotic the degree of the indoctrination is since early childhood*
American evangelicals DREAM that they could have the widespread influence and overall weight over society as churches - mainly, The Roman Catholic one - have down south.

1. I noticed that the cover looks terribly edited. That or my eyes are worn out
2. If these women in the book are so worried about babies and fertility, just store the eggs. Or adopt.

They have a bunch of yes men around them,
Which makes them feel like they are experts in everything.
Even writing a book.
I've been a professional translator for many years. I'm only 20 minutes in and I have a feeling this book will manage to offend translators as well... Which would be quite the achievement because we're cool people too!
You couldn't pay me enough to translate this, it's an abomination of a book and an assault on human decency.
I put more work into my fictional worlds in my fantasy novels than Debi bothers to do about people in the real world, lol.
No joke, they both display all of the deadly sins:
-Greed, for intentionally hobbling their products’ availability just to make them profitable.
-Sloth, expands off of Greed, has the potential to give out free bibles for accessibility, but doesn’t because it doesn’t benefit them. They only help people when they feel like it.
-Lust, from the “love story.”
-Wrath, they blow up on anyone for very minuscule nitpicks and just act outright abusive towards Cheyenne.
Does Debbie Pearl's awfulness come naturally or does she work on it?

But what if Gid already decided to send the duggers to hell? If god already decides then it you're on the hell list it won't matter if you're faithful
@@raydgreenwald7788
You’re thinking about this too critically-to the Duggars, there’s no question they’re already part of the Elect. To doubt this would be to doubt their entire view of the world.
A decent summary, but I think it misses out on a lot of the issues regarding "Total Depravity," "Limited Election," and "Perseverance of the Saints" which are all essential to understanding where these things come from.

why does this have MenWritingWomen vibes to it, even though it was supposedly written by a woman?
“MenWritingWomen” is really just “MisogynistWritingWomen” but catchier
Oh my yes. The internalized misogyny runs DEEP in Evangelical circles.

“Internalized”
Lowkey I was kind of expecting the twist to be that she was pregnant with a miracle fetus… but no… it’s AIDS 🥴 the hell
What bits I hated: the whole thing
What bits I liked: Rachel roasting the whole thing
30:59 if you’re not familiar with Orla Gartland, you absolutely need to listen to her song “Bloodline.” That whole album is wonderful but I found that song in particular to be a good reckoning with these kinds of issues
Oh my word. This book is a spectacle. I can't believe an adult wrote it.
The Pearls are convinced that they're smarter than almost everybody else. That's why they can use the actual botanical names for the jam ingredients and assume it's foolproof; most people are too ignorant to understand them. You know what would have been more fun? If they'd made up their own names for the ingredients and used THAT. "We'll need some purple thumbs, sour-smacked mushballs, and at least a bushel of sawtoothed coughers."
@RiaJaize
You said - "If they'd made up their own names for the ingredients and used THAT. "We'll need some purple thumbs, sour-smacked mushballs, and at least a bushel of sawtoothed coughers.""
That would have been a great idea, but unfortunately that would take something too close to creativity for Debbie Pearl to manage.
parents are merely the vehicles of your existence. if they are rotten they are rotten. if they are good, lucky you.
Debbie thinking that there aren't many websites in other languages is one thing, but she makes it seem like there are no multilingual people that would visit websites in foreign languages, so I guess, as a German, I can't continue watching your content?? Or that I'm just pretending to understand English, and it has *nothing* to do with the fact that I've had English classes since 3rd grade??Like, that's ridiculous...
I might be overreacting but as someone who adores languages and learning languages, it always really annoys me when people discredit the accomplishments of multilingual people...
...or disregard how being bilingual is REALLY common in non english speaking countries...
Ok, Debbie Pearl is absolute garbage, but how could anyone think "You're So Vain" is a love song? Just no. Did that guy ever listen to the lyrics?
I actually got an ad for Sword Search on this video. It looks like something I made in 2009 for my IT SAT level.
"It was like looking from space, except the map was spread out flat."
So she acknowledges that the Earth is round?
This book is very insightful as to how the Pearls and their ilk see the world. I'm not sure that Debi meant it to be QUITE this insightful.
From now on, I'll always have some fresh plants on hand, never know when I need to drop someone XD
Not me realizing where my fear about my fertility fading at 26 comes from. I don’t want to have a partner (asexual) so I probably won’t get pregnant so i never really knew why I get anxiety about it. Thanks created to be a helpmeet. 😔✌️
Some things in this book sound a lot like beliefs/practices held by the LDS Church. I grew up in Salt Lake City but only recently learned about things like the huge food storage facilities the LDS Church has in preparation for some kind of apocalypse. They also have immense wealth and power but don't use it to do good. I had four (female) Mormon roommates one year in college and three of them were only there to find a husband and then drop out. 🤨
22:25 Wow... Just wow... It's so stupid. I am from Poland, country in Middle Europe. At some point in my house we had 3 copies of Bible in our language. We have churches like every 5 streets. 90% of population identity as Christians. We have religions lessons exclusively about Christianity at schools and even preschools. Literally only 6-7 years ago explicitly told that patents can sign off kids from that lessons, and only 3 years ago it actually most students used it. Every conservative political and half political, polish media talk about "Christian view". It's some much and forcefully pushed down the throat, that current generation massively started to go away from religion.
I'm not Polish myself and I'm no expert, but I know exactly what you mean. From what I understand, there were serious discussions there about whether or not Corona was "God's punishment for gender ideology"
So many things but the funniest for me is her not knowing Jesus is literally in the Quran
😂 I can’t get over the names Debbie’s picked for these characters.
I have been listening to this and thinking, I should take up writing lol
Can't be that bad
