What you said about " an ugly old piece of wood" is also true about people: "you never know what's inside" Jesus pulls us from the firewood pile. The Holy Spirit, like a bowl gauge and other chisels shapes into vessels tp be filled with God's love, beautiful to behold. I notice you make a LOT of "hero cuts" sweeping from one end to another.
hmmm, yep god so loves us that he took his 'gouge' to the last 10 years of my Dads life (a Christian and a good man by the way), and destroyed them with dementia, maybe he had a catch! ......so yep gotta love that God, he's such a kidder!
I love cedar too and have saved a cut off from the end of a cedar log mantel I made. Someday I’ll find a turner to make some beautiful things for me! Thank you sir for your service and have a blessed Christmas.
First. ThankYou Sir. For your service to our country. Second. What a beautiful piece. I love wood. My friends often ask me if I was a dog in my last life. - I pick up so many sticks to use as walking sticks and drift wood. - just remarkable the way nature gives her best -- and you help the process making it beautiful.
Amazing wood and amazing work. I love your videos and I really like your comments, you have a beautiful voice and I could listen to you for hours, thank you. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I had an old friend who passed on recently and he used to say, because he was a good and charitable person, "never write somebody off altogether." The same is true of most chunks of wood. They can always become something if we put in a bit of work. Thanks again, Rod. Terrific work.
Red cedar is always beautiful, no matter if the timber has flaws. Rescued from the wood heap makes this piece of Red Cedar much more special in my humble opinion. Congratulations on making the stunning bowl.
Wood is amazing, she will always surprise us. You have an awesome voice, so clear and so captive, nature voice overs could be a new line of work. Thanks for sharing
That turned out absolutely gorgeous. I love cedar. Bet your shop smelled heavenly. When you were cutting on the bandsaw, looked like you were cutting a slab of ham. Ha ha :-) I dearly love imperfections in wood, knotholes and all. Try to incorporate them into my design. Wood always has a story, we just need to listen to what it has to say. I take cedar shavings, put them in a small drawstring pouch and put them into drawers. God bless, enjoyed your video. 🙏
Just my opinion.... But there is nothing more beautiful than nature! Thank you, Rod!! It's always a pleasure! Thanks to Chuck Mills for sending the automotive emblems! Too cool! Great places to put them, Rod! We can all repeatedly enjoy them!
Hi Rod. Could not help but think that a Cedar bowl of similar size would be the perfect safe home for your Marine Dress White Gloves (assuming your still have them) with the Marine Seal that you received embedded in the lid. An honorary home for remembering your most honourable service to your country. Semper Fi - Canadian Brother Dennis
It is such a pleasure watching you make a piece of wood come alive and listening to your mindful measured commentary - such beautiful colours, wonderful patience and skill - and insight. Thank you Thank you.
I watched this video entirely for the title. What you did with that ugly piece of fire wood is amazing. You saved it and made it into some beautiful. I could tell it was a labor of love. If only life was that straightforward. Semper Fi
How beautiful....I am glad I found this channel. I wanted to take "shop" in high school 50 years ago and was laughed out of the office and put into home Ec.... I did not get the opportunity to do anything in wood but I have a deep appreciation for the skill and artistry.
Wow, wow, wow! What a stunner, it's absolutely gorgeous!! You have an amazing ability to see the beauty in something that most would consider was an ugly piece of garbage firewood. I'm so glad you rescued it. The pink/raspberry tones that were brought out are simply breathtaking! Thank you for showing us your handy work.
Cricket, the colour variance and grain pattern in that cedar is amazing. What a beautiful turning. Very well done and thanks yet again for sharing with us, mate. Cheers.
You really have an eye for beautiful pieces of wood and what to turn them into. The wood grain is quite stunning. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful!
I like the way you allowed the irregularities guide the final shape. Fow a while there I had hoped for a near perfect round bowl. But no, the bowl would not allow that. Thank you. It is beautiful!
Thank you for your 1 o’clock 3 o’clock technique. So instructive and so clear. 🙏🏽 Such a beautiful piece and awe inspiring as to the wonder given to us all with these beautiful creations. You are a channel.
I love watching your videos. Our shop has been closed until this past Monday, and I am anxiously awaiting the time I can get back on the lathe. Thank you and God bless you. I am an Air Force veteran, and thank you for your service.
Well said, my friend. I couldn't agree more. I don't tend to go deeper than 3/8" but more often I'll go 1/4". Just deep enough for the teeth or ridges on my chuck jaws to grab and hold securely.
You have the God given ability to see beauty in just about any piece of wood and get that beauty out for all to see... and make us grateful for seeing it with you. Blessings. Semper Fi.
Kind of you to say, and much appreciated. I do feel blessed, not because I think I'm good...I'm very self critical, but because of what others see in my work. I appreciate your comment. Semper Fi
I always enjoy watching your videos. Even though you do not say much on them, I find them highly informative just by watching how you turn wood. Also, I get many great wood turning ideas while watching what you do. This bowl is another really nice wood turning that was saved from the fire pit! Semper Fi, MSGT Humphrey!!
Have to admit, watching you turn this gorgeous piece of wood made me a lot jealous. It has been ungodly hot here so I haven't been able to get into my wood shop for over a month (no ac out there) and you turned my favorite kind of wood. Thanks, now I've got the turning bug again and it's too hot to go out into my shop. Thanks for sharing this journey with us anyway. I love watching your videos.
That turned out beautifully, the flaws are what makes this bowl so “perfect” because nothing and no one is perfect, we all have flaws. I have only been turning for 5 months, am addicted and hope someday to be half as talented as you are. I can’t wait to turn some cedar so I can hopefully reveal some beauty and improve the scent of my shop
Such a beautiful piece of cedar wood. The smell alone must have been awesome. Not to talk about that wood grain with its stunning colors reminding me of icecream. Beautiful, piece a d work Rod. Thanks for sharing. Please stay safe and take care. Semper Fi.
Hi Mr Humphrey I have call you Mr as I do not know your first name. God has given you beautiful talent and you show it off very well. A tree is not just a tree it is a nice piece of beauty, that has died and you are able to bring it back to life in a different form,
I like the way you cut a piece of wood to a circular shape before you start shaping it. So many other turners don't cut the corners off. That's not an efficient way to do things I worry that the corners will hurt them. It's much safer. Thank you! I don't have to worry as much when I watch you!
The depth of color was striking as it was revealed! It really adds to the already great turning experience...each piece is so full of potential. Thanks very much
You are my "go to" turner for learning! I got my lathe a month ago and your videos have been such a valuable learning tool for me. This was a great video! Keep up the great work!
Turning cedar is always something special. It's the wood that always makes your heart sing. Slightly biased, YES. Thanks for sharing. A real beauty from a piece of firewood. Keep safe and well.👍

Renae Bettenhausen Love this! ❤️✝️🕊
Amen
Well said, Renae! A beautiful comment that I appreciate very much! PS lol, hero cuts 😊
Beautifully said Renae!

Very beautiful grain and color, great,👍👍
a beautiful bowl. Just a piece of wood put in the right hands turns that wood into an artistic beauty.
Beautiful bowl. Thank you for your service 👍👊👊
A true work of art. Beautiful, thank you for sharing. 🌈🙏🌞
I love cedar too and have saved a cut off from the end of a cedar log mantel I made. Someday I’ll find a turner to make some beautiful things for me! Thank you sir for your service and have a blessed Christmas.

It looks fabulous well done
Outstanding very beautiful piece of cedar love it
a keen eye saw the bowl in the hunk of firewood and voila!...truly beautiful 💜
What a beautiful bowl
Turned out amazing, tones in the wood are beautiful.
Stunning great bowl
Red cedar is always beautiful, no matter if the timber has flaws. Rescued from the wood heap makes this piece of Red Cedar much more special in my humble opinion. Congratulations on making the stunning bowl.
The fact that it isn't perfect I think is what gives it it's beauty.
Nice find, great job!
Very nice save, old pieces of firewood can sometimes surprise us to see whats hidden!!
The eyes of a Pro saved such a beauty from burning!
Thank you for the beautiful work. You let that tree continue life in its new lovely shape.
Such a beautiful bowl
Idk when or where you served, but thank you for your service. 🙏🏅
12:49 When you said "waves of grain", I immediately thought, "Oh beautiful for spacious skies...". Beautiful turnout on this project!
I love that thought! Thank you!
Wow! You got all philosophical there sir! Now you know why I rockhound. The beauty on the inside.....amazing!

I was like, "Looks like prosciutto!". 😂
Lol, it did look like a slab of meat! A great idea for the shavings, and well said. Thank you!
That wood smells great!

Beautiful bowl. I love the way the color came through as you were hollowing it out.
You bring to live old pieces of wood to absolutely beautiful pieces of Art. Thank you very much for doing these for all of us.
So beautiful, saved from the fire. Gorgeous!

I do love the sound of chisel cutting wood, simply takes the place of all the worlds issues and troubles. Well done as always Rod!
How deep do you usually cut the mortise for final turning?
Well said, my friend. I couldn't agree more. I don't tend to go deeper than 3/8" but more often I'll go 1/4". Just deep enough for the teeth or ridges on my chuck jaws to grab and hold securely.
@@RHumphrey thanks!

Have found in my short month of turning how much fun it is to pick stuff out of the wood pile. Love your stuff.
Have to admit, watching you turn this gorgeous piece of wood made me a lot jealous. An amazing piece. Recognizing the hidden form is a lot more than spinning a lathe!
The artist turns a beautiful piece of art!
That piece of firewood is now a very beautiful bowl. I now know what Cedar looks like and can appreciate its beauty.
I like the way you cut a piece of wood to a circular shape before you start shaping it. So many other turners don't cut the corners off. That's not an efficient way to do things I worry that the corners will hurt them. It's much safer. Thank you! I don't have to worry as much when I watch you!
