This movie is brilliant because it stays with you long after you have watched it. Movies don't all have to be feel good or make you relieved, there are more emotions out there that most movies won't explore, this movie has most of them.
It's still with me! I can't hear Que Sera Sera without tearing up.
I must say that this is one of the most beautiful films I've seen in the past 10 years.
I totally agree!
@@theNewBee agree some kind soul DVD-ed this film for me because the alternative cinema showing was brimming with viewers each time it was shown. Needs to be shown on a BIG screen. Lovely, rare story as is the film.
This movie is one of my favorite movies
same
This film is a masterpiece
Totally agree!

Best Aussie movie ever made.
My favourite.
I don’t usually cry during movies, but I cried like a little bitch when I saw this movie
+liv rose I'm not ashamed to say me too
omg me too i knew the ending but MAN that still got me
I'm always surprised when animated movies are so touching they can make me cry. I once cried on a plane watching Wall-E. I'm sure everyone around me thought I was nuts!
I have a whole list of movies that tear me to shreds. If Robots can make an audience cry, then Pixar did something right!
I even converted this movie to an mp3 audio and listen to them everytime I feel down. This movie gave a huge impact to me and help me endure my life and keep on going on. I identify both mary and max. Amazing review
This movie make me shocked.
This movie make me cried.
This movie make me happy.
And I'm still loved this movie.
I saw the ending and I bald my eyes out 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Great review, Tom. I really enjoy your Riffed Reviews, but this was a lovely one to watch. Cheers! Love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks for such a great review, Tom! I first saw this movie many years ago & was absolutely floored at the honesty & also the innocence (Max is also very innocent, about many topics). I can't help but watch it about once per year, just to remind myself of a few important life issues. You're absolutely correct about the song "Que Sera Sera" never sounding the same again, once you've heard it in this movie (attached to that VERY moving scene)!
I watched this movie back in 2011 when I was 15 on Netflix. It's been in my memory since then. For most indie movies I watch, I remember the premise but forget the title. This one of the few that really stuck with me all these years.
Can you believe it?! This film inspired two teenagers in China to write to each other via letters.
+Yaowen Chan that's so cool!
This film made me sob more than once though I don’t normally,as I don’t really cry at films all that often. The reason why it caused such a strong reaction in me is probably because it was so close to my own experiences of loneliness and self-loathing mostly a product of my Asperger's Syndrome and the social anxiety that comes with it.It was also wonderful to see a more realistic portrayal of Asperger’s as most are either showing all of us as savants/geniuses (though in reality they are quite rare) or are just misinformed and insensitive. I hope I’m not rambling to much, I just think that this film is an underrated gem and it hit me on such a personal level. Love your vids 😊
Had anyone dared to try a chocolate hot dog?
No, but since I saw the movie always wanted to try, i'm going to buy a big chocolate bar this weekend and make one : )
Ps.: another thing that i wanted to try from a movie is the "twinkie hot dog " thing from UHF but we dont have twinkies in Argentina : (
+anducure I can't help but wonder myself what that would taste like... If I ever tried out, I should film it lol
uma vez meu ex namorado colocou no pao de bisnaguinha uns quadradinhos de barra de chocolate porque sabia que eu gostava de mary and max
Watched this movie today and it was so odd and amazing. Thanks for the great review
I cant believe you dont have more viewers with these reviews.
They're funny, well edited, and all in all awesome!
Tbh though, only reason I found them is because Ive been subbed to you for the last 6 years :P
+HarleyAMV Thanks for watching! I've only been at this about 3 months, so maybe views week pick up eventually. But thanks also for being a subscriber! I really appreciate it. :)
I really loved the film but it didn’t make me cry. It was truly amazing and breathtaking but I didn’t properly cry at the film.
The last film that i cried was Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father. It might’ve been because it was real life footage.
I know this is a based on a story and it’s probably one of the best stop motion film that i have seen
Crying is optional to enjoy this movie. I just take that option lol.
theNewBee but either way, it’s still better then most garbage films that i have seen.
I love how clever the script is and how much it talks about.
Asparagus syndrome was such a big opener from me because I didn’t expect them to go into that subject.
I have never cried harder in my life than I did when I watched "Dear Zachary"... Maybe it's because I'm a father, I don't know. As depressing as it is, it's still a beautiful film, that the whole world should see. I feel the same way about this one.
Heath Kish it’s truly a fantastic film
This is my other favorite stop motion film. I fund it quite underrated, and I think it feels grateful to see an animated story that has real issues. This is a true story, by the way.
What is your other favourite one if I may ask? I personally love Wes Anderson's stop motions such as Isle Of Dogs and Fantastic Mr. Fox!
@@kasra.b3316 My first favorite would have to be "Coraline."
I've yet to watch Mary & Max in its entirety, mainly because I fear the emotional gut punch. I have too many films that make me cry, but the one that stands out the most in my mind is The Land Before Time. I cry in the first 10 minutes at the moment Littlefoot recognizes his mother and the music swells as she nuzzles him. It's something about the purity and warmth of their instant bond and mother and child that pulls it out of me. Many scenes of that film make me cry for different reasons, but that is the first scene to get that reaction out of me because it's just so beautiful. The animation, the music, the soothing voice of Littlefoot's mother creates a torrent of emotion in me that I can never hold back.
It’s my all time favourite movie . It’s a very heavy artwork about the “confuzzled “world in which only a few people can think straight. Thanks for posting a very nice review. People with mallow hearts will always remember it.
This one, this is the one that makes me cry. Another one would be The fireflies Graveyard (I believe thats what is called in english)
I've heard of that. I could always use another tear-jerker in my movie life. :)
yeah, i've watched both in one day and now i'm in need of antidepressants ...tones of'em
This is my all time favourite movie with heavy artwork. It just fully portrays the “confuzzled” world.
Isn't "confuzzled" the best word ever?
@@theNewBee Absolutely !!
Such a beautiful movie. And a beautiful review, thank you
Thank you for watching!
I forgot I watched this movie years ago.. and I just remembered the end 😢....... the feels............. right ......in..... the .......feels.............
I thought this movie was a fever dream from my childhood. extremely well produced film though
I cried several time.watching Creed 2.
This movie brought me close, tho
I feel so conflicted about this movie. I don't know what I should feel. 😂
+Miss Bill Cipher I think the important thing is that this movie makes you FEEL :)
TheNewBee
Pretty much. Throughout the entire movie, for me personally, I honestly couldn't believe my eyes. Every. Single. Fucking. Character. Was either dead, dying, went through a horrible tragedy, or just left. There was no "ending" for me. It was as if the script writer was like "here it is, I don't know what to do now but take it or leave it".
LMAO and I was going to watch this for the first time with my younger siblings. Thank goodness I checked it out first 😂💀💯😂
Just goes to show that animated movies don't have to be for kids. I'm in my 40's and I could barely handle it LOL!
I just saw this film for a Film Studies class, and this became my favorite stop motion film
Great to see other people enjoyed this movie same as me. Thank you.
I loved this movie, it helped me realize the importance of self-acceptance and loving yourself, "warts and all" 😊😊😊.
the ending got me guys.it is really emotional man.(ready to cry now)
A friend begged me to watch this years ago, still not forgiven him over the ending I used a whole box of tissues, one of the best films I have ever seen though, 3 other films that always reduce me to tears are, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, Grave Of The Fireflies & Any Day Now.
I loved it and i cryed so much
I watch an awful lot if films with my husband, and I still feel bad crying infront if him. I'm getting better but still, I've been avoiding this because I know it will wreck me. 😆 The three movies I cried at hardest were, The Whole Wide World, Ink and SLC punk. Matthew Lillard doesn't get enough credit for his work.
Oh and Deadpool 2, ughhh in Stevo from SLC Punk's words: "I wasn't ready."
Yeah Phillip S. Hoffman RIP
When you get older it hits different watching a movie where a 40 year old man writes letters to an 8 year old girl. Still an AWSOME movie
This is really true , I watched this movie back in elementary but I didn't really understand it but was still sad , watching it now as I'm in 11th grade in highschool , I fucken understand it and cry at the ending :,)
I fell in love with this movie quickly. It is the most genuine movie I have ever seen.
This movie hit feels I didn't even know I had. I Loved it, and your review.
O sometimes Cry when i See grave of Fireflies. Ans sometimes at the last Unicorn.
Only thing that makes me cry is cutting onions.
Guess which movie almost makes me cry. (not that it's the only one)
+The Ignorant Philosopher a documentary about onions?
Not quite. I suspect you'll get it if you watch Mary and Max again. ;)
Muriel's Wedding?
Mary & Max obviously. Max only cries when cutting onion, though that doesn't count, he says.
That was my second guess!
Did you know that Bobby Cronin has made this GORGEOUS film into a musical??
I had no idea! Now i want to see that, and risk crying in front of strangers...
That ending was depressing.
No argument here.
not really, spoilers
He died peacefully, looking at all the letters he had received. And he was going to die from obesity eventually, but it is sad they never met.
Moving
Mary and Max didn't make me cry but it did touch me,.Very few movies actually make me cry but the number one movie that always makes me cry is The Lion King.... just that one scene with Mufasa and I'm not talking about the live action/cgi remake, I'm talking about the original remake.
When I was young, the movie that made me cry was this one, and The Odd Life Of Timothy Green
It still gets me!
Hi, Tom! Great review. I've never heard of this movie before and now I really want to see it! It looks like it's one that will hit me right in the feels. Keep up the good work- love your thoughtful analysis! :-)
Let me know how you like Mary and Max once you see it.
I watched it yesterday! It was so good. I loved the soundtrack it made me cry. I also really enjoyed the theme of friends being the family we choose.
i've watched this movie when i was little and i really wanted to rewatch it even though the only memory i had of it was Mary's brown mark on the forehead and that poop in the sand... yeah i didn't really get the movie all that much but now that 've watched it twice a week, i'm not ashamed one bit of crying twice this week!
I watched this as I was recommended as it was about Asperger's. It this point i normally cringe and think what crap have film makers come up with now about autistics? So i felt a moral obligation to watch it if only to destroy it's narrative. Not this time, Max's character in particular is a profoundly good, probably one of the best depictions of a autistic I've seen. Some of his dialogue includes things that only autistics will really understand. "I don't show emotion but i am in my head" "I'm fine i don't need curing" i can understand it being upsetting for some. It doesn't sidestep anything. A real classic although I couldn't help thinking Barry Humphreys was trying desperately to sound like Stephen Fry
=)
It didn't make me cry but it definitely gets sad towards the end. It's an odd movie, it left me feeling satisfied but not like I'd want to watch it again, at least anytime soon. I kinda felt the same way about My Life as a Zucchini
I cried for at least an hour after watching King Kong 😭😭😭
This is one of the best animations.
I thought I imagined this movie...
Being a person with Asperger’s myself-
this movie hits a little too close to home...
As a guy living with Asperger's, Max sums it up pretty well
You did a great job. Now i wanna it again
I can't do it at home , work is the only place I can watch a movie in peace
Boss : stop watching movies at work
Me : I'm doing research on a project
Boss : you're an accountant, what kind of research are you doing watching 'Up' ? and beside , it scared the clients when they saw you stare at the computer crying
Me : fine , no more drama , I'll watch comedy from now on , I suppose it would be better if they think I was laughing at their account
Boss : 😑
Me : remember , if you kill me , you would never heard the end of it from HR .............. again
This movie is EPIC!!!!!!!
Fabulous review
I have to admit that i cried watching this. I think harvey crumpet is a good one by the same people too.
This movie kicked my feels in the teeth when I was 8 ;-;
What year does Max die at the end ?
A very good review!
What year does Mary parents die ?
good Review man
This movie depressed the shit outta me
Me too but i love it
ALWAYS A GOOD REVIEW :)

Oh whats mu move that makes me cry fox and the hound defntly fox and the hound.
Where can i watch the film?
Last I saw it was on Amazon prime
@@theNewBee thanks!!
F... No, this aint for kids! This is for adults 😁😉👍
Wait Mary is the same Toni as in hereditary?!
So...When you tryin that chocolate hotdog
He dies at the end and it's really sad so I never watched it again
+Chels Kreucher I know it kills me every time too
It was already spoiled in the comments, so I figured the cat was out of the bag. I don't usually remove comments, but I don't like to see people attack each other here. It's a movie, for goodness sake.
The list of the movies that make me cry is very long - I am a softy
Tbh, I haven't seen the movie, but, what movie does make me cry like a little bitch is Rain Man
I watched this when I was seven 😂
Honestly it was a bit disturbing watching Mary a young and innocent child, turn into a confident adult/sex machine, and then into a suicidal minded person
A path so many take unfortunately
theNewBee Reviews true dat
Love this movie. Even if it kicks my feelings in the crotch with every rewatch.
Doesn't look like my type, but my type might have to change.🤣
Too much spoilers, people who look for this reviews, will see the movie anyways, we como for comments for experties only.
Do u know anyone with aspergers yourself?
Well fuck I'm never gonna see this movie.
It's not that sad, everyone in the comments is acting like it's the most sad movie ever created. It's just a depressing movie more than one that's gonna make you cry
@@thecookj454 it's not that it is the fact I can't get this movie anywhere and sometimes they don't show the ending in UA-cam 🤣
the movie is sad and black too much i think at the end, what did u think od the colors, the food, the extraordinary events, and thats its based o a real pen pal
+cupfcoffee it is so sad, yet strangely uplifting... I guess that would be a
Bittersweet ending. Max was happy in the end, we was finally able to cry and I think he found peace with
His only true friend. And Mary was finally at peace knowing she was there for Max.
Review? Think you better look up the difference between review and explanation
Welcome to UA-cam
Ok did you say ass burgers or Asperger's
I laughed through the whole thing. Lmao!
My favorite movie,I've seen this like at least 50 times no kidding
I don't know how many times I've seen this movie, and I cry every time!
