Wow Roger. I can definitely see that this combination birthed several devices afterwards. For lovers of DAWless setups, this would do wonders. The only real limit is creativity. I believe this evolved into an edirol device later on, and was paired to the MV. But, I can still see lots of uses for this rare bird. Thanks for the research as always. ✌🏾👍🏾

thank you for sharing, nice video as always! you say that sp 808 doesn't have a sequencer(step mode is not available in sp 808, but sp 808ex has) i right get you?i want to buy sp 808 not for beats but for techno (direction with : ambient, loops, drones ) and if it not have step mode i should choose sp 808ex? can you suggest me what to buy? thank you, peace!
Alex Ask Thanks for your comment ✌🏽 Regarding your question I can say the following. The original 808 is upgradable to 808ex so buy the cheapest one. Regarding sequencing I can say that the original 808 also has step mode so you can use it anyway to create techno beats. I always advice to upgrade to ex because of the extra effects + synthesizer. It isn’t necessary to change the drive to 250MB. Look for the cheapest working 808 and you’re good to go! Grtzzz, Roger

Hi there! So I've spent a fairly large amount of time trying to find an answer to this, but I can't seem to find really any info at all. How is the A6 as a multitrack recorder? I was thinking about using one as my main recording device, but I can't find really anything on how it performs in that area.
The A6 as a multi track recorder is pretty basic. It has 4 tracks and you can bounce tracks. It also has virtual tracks. But bet to look for a cheap VS-recorder which can do much more than the A6.
Hey I just picked up a a6 at a second hand store it powers up but says in display looking for hard disk. Any idea? Is the internal drive dead? I have a usb I might try to put in
@@stefan1024 Hi! Yes, there is. Here the link: themidimaniac.com/download-page/ Choose the SP-808 upgrade to SP-808ex download. Bare in mind that you'll need an internal zip drive. Hello MIDI Maniac, I really appreciate how you stand up for the SP-808 community! I started making music with hardware after watching a great SP-808-Performance on YT 10 years ago. But my first gear was a sp-404 and then. Now i am looking for a sp-808, because i love the combination of sampler + multitrack recorder in one unit. In my area i could buy a roland a6 in good condition for 200 euros, but i'm wondering if the os is really similar. Is it possible to sync bpm of samples on a6? can i timestrech samples to a specific bpm? and is the sequencer the same? You affirm that it is possible to transfer the sp-808-os to an a6. Does this make sense? The internal HD would then be useless and I would still need a zip drive, right? Is it that easy to connect? Thank you in advance for your answer! And again: respect for your work for the community!
Hi! Thanks a lot for reaching out. Well, 200€ for the A6 is a reasonable price. And yes, the OS is quite different because all work with Timecode and not with BPM. It is possible to stretch but it is not accurate enough. The best way is to change to OS to SP-808eMix and then you have to switch the HDD for a Zip Drive, unfortunately. I've never had the luck to have the original HDD for the A6. Perhaps it does work with the SP-808, but I doubt that. Check out the manual on my website to see it yourself. themidimaniac.com/roland-a-6-videocanvas/ Connecting a Zip Drive is super easy because the motherboard of the A6 is the one of the SP-808 so it's just an IDE cable and a power cable (but they should be there for the HDD already) Be aware that the layout is different and that there's no D-Beam but you can arrange a new layout on StyleFlip. www.styleflip.com/roland-sp-808-skins-custom-sticker-covers Thanks again and I hope this helps!
@@theMIDImaniac Hey Roger, after a lot of researching i found somebody who wants to sell me his sp-808 in very good condition with op1-board and the 2000xl- cf-card-reader installed. So i pass the a6 and go for the 808. But it's gonna be not cheap, of course.
Yes, you can. You need to upload the EX-firmware into the A6. Also you will need a Zip drive if you want to sample with the SP-808 because the hard drive will not be recognised. Perhaps it doesn’t even have a hard disk.
USB-disks won’t work. You’ll need 2.5” IDE drives. Those ones from old laptops.
Good luck!
