  • Fitzpatrick opened the 2022 season by intercepting Joe Burrow for a pick-six in Week 1, an indication of what was to come the rest of the year. He finished the year tied for the league lead with six total INTs, along with 11 passes defensed, and his skills as a ballhawk earned him first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors after a year off.

That falcons pick six the game was about to be over. If he was to score the falcons had a chance to get the ball back and win it with a couple of seconds. By going out of bounds he allowed the Steelers to end the game by taking one knee. One of the smartest plays you’ll see.

Occasionally, in the best interest of a win, a player will intentionally down himself or run out of bounds before scoring. Some circumstances dictate it would be better to hold onto the ball with a 1st down and run out the clock to end the game, rather then give the opposition a chance to score. These are thy type of players you want to call a teammate, sacrifice personal glory for the good of the team.

Coach ‘em up time for Jacob. 5:22 is not about Minkah’s 40yd speed - it’s a combination of things: (1) Footwork - he opens up his hips & gets a good drop/backpedal over the route which means he has the route in front of him & gets a good break in the ball. You can run fast as hell but it won’t mean much as a DB if you can’t backpedal & have the right footwork to break on the ball. (2) His responsibility on the play seems to be either a bracket coverage with him on top or some kind of cover 1 or 2 zone. It seems he’s seen this in his game film work, & is less about making a gamble & “backing himself” & more a decision based on that information. Safeties don’t have the luxury of gambling because if they whiff then it’s usually 6 points for the other team. Corners can sometimes gamble a bit more when they’ve got deep help with a safety.
    (3) the read by Burrow is pretty horrible & the throw a bit behind where it should be, affected by Watt’s pressure, & Fitzpatrick also seems to have baited the throw with giving what @ 1st seems like a lot of room to the route underneath him.
If you’re thinking a rugby fullback would be suitable to play safety - other than the fact that they are both back there as the last line of defence - you’d be absolutely wrong. I’ve coached plenty of DBs and fullbacks who have come over from rugby & the pursuit angles, responsibilities, & what they’ve got to read - are vastly different

He didn’t go for the touchdown for a good reason. He personally would’ve benefited from it, but he secured a win for the team by doing that.

10:01 It had nothing to do with protecting his body. That’s actually showing how selfless he is. He could have gotten himself a touchdown, but it was near the end of the game, and stepping out of bounds made it so we could just run the clock out & finish the game with a win.
