      Realistically, when people moved away from their smaller towns in past decades, people would lose contact all the time. There were probably many circumstances of breakups and get togethers that caused drifts in communications among the 4 of them. I bet in the early 80’s maybe Donna and Eric went to Kelso and Jackie’s wedding, but after that life might of caught up with both parties not expecting the kids to ever really meet. Now a days with social media it seems more common for us to return to our home towns more often and to text our old friends from high school, but back then it was probably a bitch.

    Most series made for a streaming service, even great shows, will likely face the same problem, as these services seek to grow user numbers,but a third or fourth season of a show, that you’ve never seen, won’t get you to give them a shot, but a new series might.
    Of course on top of that is the short seasons, some as low as six episodes, that make every episode even more important. For example in Next Gen had a few silly or poorly written episodes, it was just 3 out of 20+ in that season, which is vastly different than if it was 3 of 8 or 10.
    Then finally the extended period between seasons drive even more potential fans away.

    The show has some other issues. That '70s Show felt like cartoons and satire I saw of the '70s as a kid. I was born in '79, so I don't remember them personally, exactly. And yes, it had a sitcom coat of paint. But it had things that matched what I knew of the decade, and the older people watching with me felt was right.
    That '90s show does not. The friend group is weird for small town Midwest (which is where I grew up). It's too racially diverse (for modern audiences). When I was in high school there were 3 black kids in a school of 1,800 kids. There were 2 Asian kids (one was an elementary school friend of mine and the other was her sister). There were probably more Latinos than I realized, Maybe about 10 per grade for a grand total of 40. We did have another ethnic group in large numbers that's not represented here, but that was more my specific locale and wouldn't have made sense for the show. Maybe they should have have had more Native American rep. Anyway, everyone else was white.
    I don't have issue with the kids being accepting of each other. Most of us didn't really care, or we had people who ran around trying (and failing) to collect different races like Pokemon because they felt they had something to prove about being good people. I have issue with why they would want to be with each other in the first place. In that kind of structure, the much smaller racial divisions just hung out with people that they liked,. They didn't all hang out together because other than being minorities, they didn't really have anything in common as people.
    And so we're presented this racially diverse group of people who have nothing in common as individual people, and it just feels so off because there's no reason for them to want to hang out together. It feels immensely forced because of the diversity, whereas if it were somewhere like New York, it would seem normal.
    Then you have the gay kid. And again, it's not that they accept him. Heck, at this point in my life, half my friends are GLBT. It's that in that time period, being a teenager, well, someone needs to explain to the rest of the cast what gay is. They're missing this foundational bit of knowledge and it is not covered in sex ed. I'm not sure when Gen Z learned gay people exist. But I did not know until high school that this was an option. There was no "And Tango Makes Three" when I was a kid. And while I loved Hollywood in Mannequin, it took me a while to really pay attention to the fact that he was dating a man. Oh, and there was the Bird Cage. Let's see, that came out when I was a Junior in high school, 1996.
    Basically, it's not that I want them to hate on the gay kid. It's just that a normal reaction from a sheltered Midwestern kid of the '90s was confusion due to lack of knowledge. Which means there should be questions asked and conversations had if they're going to actually be friends.
    Speaking of friends, Leia has this weird thing where it feels like she has no friends during the school year in the area that she actually lives. Why is her only life living with her grandparents? Why does it feel like she gets boxed up and put on the shelf for the rest of the year? Where is her actual life?
    I suppose these issues all go back to poorly thought out characters. Part of the problem is basically both how the character fit together and how the characters fit in the setting (both time and place). Gen X was very individualistic, and what I mean by that is we had tight knit friend groups and we would accept all kinds of different behavior (depending on the friend group, not going to pretend there weren't haters out there), but we accepted you based on who you were as a person. So the writing of the relationships being so bad is particularly aggravating and makes the whole thing weird.

    If you think That 70s Show didn't have Disney Channel-level acting, you are watching it through rose-tinted glasses. And its first two seasons were some of its worst for the same reasons you listed here. That 90s Show had potential and easily could've lived up to its parent show if given enough time to find its footing.

  • @Edge50199
    @Edge50199 15 годин тому +6

    Honestly, it wasn't suppose to exist so it was DOA. Laurie's actress was dead, Danny Masterson is in prison. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are too expensive to participate in this show. The new cast was either copying old characters and had to fill the shoes of old actors instead of being their own show. And all the times we had member berries in the show from the 70s show.

      Also don't forget Tanya Roberts, who played Midge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but do they ever even address their absence? I only got to the first 4 episodes of season 1, and dropped it after that. But yes, the show was DOA, none of the characters were interesting and the actors and actresses felt like 2020s kids trying to play 90s teenagers, but know nothing about the decade. None of them felt remotely interesting at all.

    Not particularly interested in watching a show that makes me go "Heh that joke was funnier in That 70s Show". And judging by the numerous clips you showed, that happened a lot.
    If a show can't stand on it's own without relying on the property it's based on, it doesn't deserve more seasons.

    Considering how outright gross and disgusting 75% of the cast ended up being, all my interest in That 70s Show and spin-offs is just completely dead at this point. It feels gross watching the original and seeing so many POS people.

    It looked like 2010 kids emulating the 90s. Where are the baggy clothes? The big logos on the back of shirts? The hats/beanies? How is not one of them a skater boi or girl?

    • @greenrobot5
      @greenrobot5 15 годин тому +3

      Baggy pants were worn by either people into hip hop or people into nu metal, not everyone used them. And they couldn't wear big logos because they can't show real logos on a show unless they are paid advertisers

    • @zeekay9941
      @zeekay9941 13 годин тому

      @greenrobot5 back in the day, media used to make up fake brands and logos satirizing their real life counters since parody is legal to use. They could have gone that route. Baggy clothes was not a hip hop thing. It was a style. Have you seen athletes on draft night back then? They wore big suits and stuff. Also, if you're going to nostalgia bait, you should be leaning into the 90s trends. It doesn't have to be a 1-to-1 accuracy. That's actually not good for a show/movie to attract an audience.

    • @greenrobot5
      @greenrobot5 11 годин тому

      I agree that the haircuts and fashion was kind of off in the first season, but the second season was better. But the writers of this show knew more about 70's teen trends than 90's, I agree with that

  • @tonichan89

    In terms of character consistency, Kitty still having a 70's hairstyle is also kinda bullshit. Despite her age in the 70's, she seemed to adapt her hair to the decade at the time. Also, in season 8 she updated her hairstyle to a more modern look, a more 90's look even... which she and Red loved... and then, twenty years later, she's gone BACK to her old hairstyle from the 70's? It seems out of character.

    With the exception of Fuller House Netflix gives up on reboots or spin-offs after 2 or 3 seasons. I think Netflix tightening down on what it thinks was password sharing along with raising plan cost is also a partial downfall I think a number of reboots or original series would last a season or more longer if some decent project ideas weren't on Netflix, If it launched on network or a different streaming service, Seeing the show without the character of Hyde is also hard because of how integral of a character he was on the original series which might've hurt the reboot. and Just my opinion I don't believe Danny Masterson is guilty of the crimes he was accused of he's guilty of Making the Church of Scientology look bad and he's in prison to shut him up.

    Hyde missing was not even close to the problem. The kids were awful and as someone that was a teenager in the 90's.......they acted nothing like 90's kids. It was just awful. Like you said, it was basically a nickelodeon show.

  • @billzco6137

    Its vibe was like a nickelodeon show. In 70s show other than Mia Kunis...they were portraying teens but the actor was older. This success in formula goes back to Shakespeare plays.this formula is even mentioned in Freaks and Geeks which that show in itself followed that formula. Now in 90s show they look like teens acting like kids. Maybe casting was more focused back in that 70s show but for 90s show it felt like an after thought thinking the legacy alone would hold it up.

As a 90s kid who was a fan of the original I felt this show was done pretty good, it gave me a trip down memory lane (with the characters being similar to the original) wrapped in a trip down memory lane with all the 90s references.
