Here I am, 6 years after you've posted this, just learning about unlinking time selection from the loop points. I've been so hobbled all this time. Thank you, Kenny!!! 🤯
kenny you are freakin awesome. looping in just the time selection has been the bain of my life. but once again you have made life so much easier. keep up the goodwork man . you are helping alot of musicians reach their creative goals. love it
How did I not know about this? I was recording each take individually (and stopping after each one to delete it and start over) instead of using this loop trick. Thanks a lot for these tutorials man, huge time saver for me.
Thanks a bunch, Kenny! Just checking out your videos is faster and more comprehensive than trying to learn something from the user's manual. I'm in the middle of a project and I'm learning new Reaper features as I go. EXACTLY what I need right now. Thanks again!
Once again Kenny you are amazing!! THANK YOU for providing these incredibly helpful tutorials. I recommend you to everyone I know. Hands down the best tutorials anywhere on the net. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great, thank you. Exactly the info I needed, as I self-engineer and want to start doing continuous recording of vocal retakes over problem sections (without breaking between takes). Anything new in regards these features since 2016?
The ability to separate the loop and punch ranges is one of my favorite features in Reaper! I noticed that the remaining take is purple. Is there a setting that controls take colors? Some way to ensure that the remaining take is uniform with the rest of the events on the track? Great vid!
I can't get Auto Punch to work right anymore. I got the record parameter set to Auto Punch and Monitoring set to Tape Auto, but my track always punches in from the Playhead rather than the time selection. It will work if I select from within the tracks window. Also, many times it will still record from the play head. I stop, select Undo, and then start it again and then it will work without doing anything different but hitting Undo. Also, many times the track will not show that anything is recording until I hit stop. This is problematic as I might record a lengthy section unsure I am even recording it - very distracting. I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and still the same result. Windows 10 on an I7 Intel CPU.
Hi there. I totally dig your tutorials! I'm excited about using this technique, but I seem to be missing a key piece of information. I don't understand how to actually Punch In. What action is one required to do for recording to take place at the specific spot you want, like you do in the tutorial? I understand that with Monitor Input (Tape Auto Style) you can hear playback of the previous take while waiting to punch in, and that you won't hear your input until you Punch In. What activated the Punch In action? You demonstrated not being able to hear your guitar input until you punched in and I see the words Play and Punch In appear on the screen, but can't see how you told Reaper to record your input if you're doing this hands-free. The manual says you need to make a time selection when punching in, but don't see any time selection in the video. It would great if you could share that one tidbit of info because I'm losing my mind trying to understand. Thanks so much!
no action, time selection does it for you, as soon as the playhead arrives at its starting point recording turns on automatically time selection is the whiteish area he's creating over the item
I'm using my audio interface's zero latency monitoring feature when recording. Can I continue to do so and do hands-free punching as shown? Looks like I may need a monitoring mode that doesn't exist. E.g. Similar to tape auto style, but instead of monitoring the input on punch in, it turns off monitoring until punch out.

Unlinking the time selection and using the pre/post role features will be so useful. Thanks!

More than helpful. Thank you so very much!!!
Punch in on selected items gives a few more options sometimes.
Perfectly explained. Thanks!
My version of Reaper (6.32) does not have this 'monitoring input - tape auto style' or this button (next to 'In' at all ....
Thanks again Kenny, great video I'll be using this ✋️

Sorry if this stated in the video or in the comments already but, once I have a tale I like how do I get rid of all the other ones?

great jobs 👍
Thanks Bro !
I was really struggling until I unchecked the loop timeline Behavior in options. It won't work unless you do.

I dont undertand How you pounch in or pounch out, what botton you use? the example in the min 2:00 - 2:08
You don't have to punch in or out. Hit record from the beginning and it punches in and out for you.
My reaper doesnt do that
Yes it does. Watch the video again.
for example, when I push Start, I record with ctrl + r, but when I stop recording I cant record in the same track secunds later

hi kenny, how do you create multiple auto punch selections inside of one loop roll?
great)
anyone knows how to start recording when i start playing on my midi controller?
