I'm more curious whether the candidates get the questions ahead of time. I simply can't see JB's handlers accepting the debate unless they can write the answer out on que cards for Joe. I'm guessing that "officially" they don't get the questions, but CNN will pass it on to JB's team and not Trump's....CNN has done it before.

If I were Trump, my counter claim would be "in front of a live audience and NEVER any mute buttons, plus no teleprompters".
I would add plus a truly neutral arbitrator (i think that´s what they are called) maybe someone like Joe Rogan or someone akin to that.
Someone who will hold both candidates feet under the fire and not let either one get away with their version of "Come on man." someone who will actually demand that they ANSWER the question their opponent asks.
Plus at the same time calling BOTH of them out on lies told.
My guess is while Trump might accept such terms neither Biden nor the democrats would EVER want to accept those terms, as that would more or less show Biden´s weakened mental state infront of the whole nation.

Trump's a fool to "accept" such a debate. Trump should demand an audience, the allowence of 3rd party candidates from the major minor parties, and moderators who aren't BIAS for Biden, also no Mic cuts
Trump should definitely demand that Kennedy be allowed to participate. He should also make it clear that by excluding Kennedy, Joe Biden is being in-American by not including a viable candidate.

trump would be a fool to NOT accept any debate format with a doddering old fool.... the more they handicap it, the more they expose Biden's ineptitude.... this is a no brainer.... to decline would play into every media narrative that makes the claim Biden is actually a competent human being. I am more inclined they are offering the debate, and then adding stipulations to make trump decline JUST SO they can say he's afraid. Declining this would be the worst mistake he could make.... Biden needs to be forced to talk publicly as much as humanly possible.

No one changes their mind about anything with a debate, that's not the point of them. Debates are solely to demonstrate how quickly you can react and respond, how you deal with pressure, how well you formulate responses. It's basically a cognitive stress test.

Because they're the ones in power. It's sort of like kids playing Make Believe Superheroes and one of them just declares that they're immune to everyone else's power while their powers are auto hitting or some nonsense. They're only allowed to get away with it if other people shut them down. However, if everyone is playing at that kid's house and their parents are there, and everything is in their favor, shutting them down is going to be less likely.
It's sort of the same deal. Joe's side makes all these rules of engagement, basically being as favorable to him as possible while hamstringing Trump with them. If he backs out, the media will run stories about Trump fearing Biden or some nonsense.

The reason they want no audience and a mute button is because Joe can’t hear his earpiece when Trump is talking or the crowd is reacting. His handlers are screaming clever comebacks and Joe can’t hear them before the moment passes.

Have you seen the polls regarding conservatives and independents opinion of the media? The only people that do not absolutely detest the media are never going to vote for Trump anyway. The more the moderators interfere with Trump the more support Trump will get from it.

These Debates are pointless! It is a total waste of time. People are going to vote for their favorite candidates no matter what.
If I was the one setting up the debates (presuming a more or less free for all with some degree of basic decorum expected is off the table) then I would give each candidate a reasonable amount of time to talk about a topic, a chance for the other candidates to respond with an equal amount of time and then a shorter response to the response and a response to the response to the response. You then alternate who gets to go first with the opening question being determined by a coin toss. In addition if the mics are cut during their opponents time, I would give the speakers a button which turns their mic back on and is connected to a timer with like five or ten minutes on it. When you push your button both Mics are live, your timer start running down but the time your opponent has to speak during the current period stops. If you run out of time on your button you can't cut in anymore and your opponent is still guaranteed to have their full uninterrupted time. If nothing else it gamifies the debates a little and might make them more interesting. :P
