  • Bakwan means vegetable fritter snack, while jagung is corn or in this case, sweet corn. Bakwan jagung is a delicious indonesian corn fritter recipe that is both crispy and light. It is one of those recipes that is vegetarian friendly and easy to make, one of the popular fried street snacks collectively known as gorengan in indonesia. Locals may also consider bakwan jagung a staple, often referring to the term masakan sederhana sehari hari meaning simple daily food.

    The full recipe is below

    450g corn kernels
    2 red chilli, sliced thinly
    1 shallot, sliced thinly
    5 cloves garlic, chopped finely
    1 stalk spring onion green, sliced thinly
    1 cup plain flour
    ⅓ cup corn starch
    1 tsp baking powder
    ½ tbs salt
    1 tsp sugar
    ¼ tsp white pepper
    ½ tsp msg (optional)
    300ml water
    Vegetable oil
    In a bowl, mix plain flour, corn starch, baking powder, salt, sugar, white pepper, and msg until well combined.
    Add water and mix until well combined.
    The consistency should be slightly thick but not too thick.
    Add corn kernels, chilli, shallot, garlic, and spring onion and mix well.
    In a pan, heat some vegetable oil to medium high heat.
    Scoop 2-3 tbs of the mixture into the oil and fry for around 5 mins until crispy and golden brown.
    Remove and drain well before serving.

      Hi there, you may use fresh or canned corn (as long as it's not creamed corn), even frozen corn.
