    I am a land surveyor and I have been using the one handed version. I have beat the hell out of it. I absolutely love it. I might have to get the two handed version.

    These guys that are using these weapons are indeed experts by how much force they put in their swings. Epic.

    • @Divine_Serpent_Geh
      @Divine_Serpent_Geh 5 років тому +3

      God's Child 84 I think the one who does the most ineffective swings is that bald guy. Those turning or flip swings or whatever the hell they are, are ridiculous. He has no edge alignment whatsoever. Look at how much the machete flops during his cuts.
      He’s purely relying on muscling it out and the sharpness of the blade. Easy way to get hurt.
      At least Lynn Thompson has admitted lately that he had terrible form in these older videos. He has gotten a lot better.

    I used to own the 18” Latin machete. I’m a bow maker and I’ve used it for rough shaping of the stave and felling smaller diameter trees and saplings. Holds an edge well and is extremely durable. One of the best machetes I’ve ever used. I plan on buying another one here soon.

    You know, these blades are amazing. I have a two-handed latin machete myself, but I have a big problem with it. The fact that it comes unsharpened is a real big no no. I mean the ones they are using in this video are probably razor sharp. But mine came with a partially sharpened edge, and a tip that had no edge. I was very disappointed. It performs outstandingly, but the fact that it came unsharpened was not nice.

    • @jellerosendal2697
      @jellerosendal2697 10 років тому

      How did you sharpen it?(sorry if spelled wrong)

    • @hunterduncan1078
      @hunterduncan1078 10 років тому +2

      Jelle Rosendal Well, what I ended up doing was first taking it to the local hardware store and just having them put a rough bench grind on it (about 10 bucks) then I took a grinding stone and just honed it by hand at a 50 degree angle.Then after I got the edge worked out I took a diamond sharpening stick and did a little fine work, then once I got the edge as fine as I could go with the diamond stick, I took the knife sharpener that we use for our kitchen knives and honed it the best I could. It took some time, but I got it right where I want it.

    • @50centpb7
      @50centpb7 9 років тому +1

      I had the same problem. It's a bit odd, I've bought several of the Cold Steel machete line, and they've all had a fairly decent factory edge on them. Only the two-handed latin machete came unsharpened.
      Has Cold Steel offered any sort of explanation for this?

    • @hunterduncan1078
      @hunterduncan1078 9 років тому

      twiddle Dee No, I haven't tried to ask them yet. I figured, whatever. I can always get it professionally sharpened if I want.

    • @50centpb7
      @50centpb7 9 років тому +2

      Hunter Duncan Of course, but don't you think it's a bit, well, unacceptable for them to advertise their machetes with sharpened blades in these demonstration videos, when their actual delivered products have the cutting capacity of butter knives? I think an explanation is in order.
      By the way, I was going to have mine sharpened at the local hardware store as well, but I was too insecure to be seen in public with a big ass machete. So instead, I resorted to going over the entire 21 inches with the Lanskys' sharpening system. It took me like two days :D

      Zoltan Csikos: Yes, he is sure. My Cold Steel Latin had the worst edge I've ever seen on a factory machete. It wasn't just dull. The grind was terrible. It was not even from end to end or from side to side. Looked like someone with Parkinsons ground the edge. Be prepared to not just sharpen the thing, but to completely re-profile the grind before you can begin to sharpen it.

      Asertix357 Well of course, his movements and technique are awful. Who the hell swings a machete like like?
      His edge alignment was way off leading to the bad cut, and the insane bending and flopping of the blade during the cut. Just muscling it out, no technique at all.

    Sawback machetes are no good

    • @Divine_Serpent_Geh
      @Divine_Serpent_Geh 4 роки тому +1

      What would really be the use of that? Besides, sawbacks on machetes are not such a good idea. They may look neat, but it will cause problems down the road.
      I had a friend snap his Ontario 18” sawback while chopping a small dead pine. Second half of the blade somehow ricochet back up and nailed him square in the abdomen. Luckily he wasn’t too hurt. But it hurt like hell, I could see it.
      The point is, in between every saw tooth on the spine, there is a sharp angle joining them. If a knife maker knows anything is that very sharp/acute plunge lines on hardened steel is not a good idea. These little joints are very acute and when the machete is used to chop, as shock is sent through the blade, guess where it also goes? Yes, those sharp little grooves. You may not be able to see it, but with impact work, that stress begins to form tiny microscopic cracks there. Eventually these propagate into the blade, similar to how a small crack on your windshield eventually turns into a long breakage. At that point failure is only a matter of time. One day on a hard chop, your machete is just going to snap into to pieces.
      So I urge you to stay away from a sawback machete from any brand. Stay safe 👍

      Diswazzi No problem. People underestimate just how quickly things can go wrong when your swinging a large blade. Especially one that is of risk of breaking.
      If you’re looking to use it for what it’s made for, get one of the regular latin machetes. The two handed variant is just awkward (Note: that’s my opinion, you might like it), but the way a machete is used, the long handle will just cause problems for me. You’ll have to finish the sharpening yourself, but once you do it, it will be a good, tough tool. CS makes pretty strong stuff, and have no complains about their 1050 steel.
