Comedian Patton Oswalt, author of Silver Screen Fiend, describes how he broke his movie addiction and stopped 'heckling' Hollywood.
Love the Coronet shoutout
Vader: "I am your father!"
C3PO: "Oh my...!"
Ha, I also saw it the first midnight. Then I cycled back home and on the way some cops stopped me on the highway and asked me what I am doing cycling at 3 am.
He be spitttin
People give critics a hard time, but if you look at RT scores and Metacritic, most of the time, they pretty much agree with audiences. Sometimes they do get films wildly wrong, or do things like give 'good' ratings to films that become classics and 'great' ratings to films that fade quickly, but those are unusual. It's interesting watching old Siskel and Ebert reviews to see the films they completely failed at, which are usually films they trashed.
Take notes modern-day critics, studios, and fan boys. Not every piece of criticism is whining.
I got three of the best hours of sleep in my life in the theater during my viewing of Phantom Menace.
Hates TPM, but references AoTC within the first minute lol
I went to the premiere in NY Times Square party after was at Mars 2112 such a deflated atmosphere
People are too hard on the prequels.
I'm glad I don't hate the prequels as much as so many people do. I just don't care for them and thus I can move on much more easily.
I watched Phantom Menace FOUR TIMES at the theater before I finally admitted to myself that it was shit. Then I went out and bought the DVD 6 months later because it had EXTRA SCENES!
Nerd habits are hard to break.
Is that Dan Kois interviewing Patton?
not anti criticism i'm anti heckling and whining.
I remember coming out of the theater and I was with a group of friends at the time, and it was as if we were all raped but having been traumatized so hard we turned to each and in blatant denial made comments like, "That was really good right?". As if trying to convince ourselves that we wanted to be raped in the first place. "Yeah i liked it a lot, it was really good. I mean, it had the theme song in it." "The CGI was really good". It was an easy translation to something like, "we really deserved to be anally probed didn't we?"
Raped and surprised by disappointment are on polar opposites of scale.
The prequels are good movies, idc what anyone says 😂
He can be very funny, but their isn't enough of the book to justify paying for it.
The prequels *never happened*! Counting on JJ to do 7,8,9 right.
Unfortunately, the prequels are technically still canon
Don't worry. In a few decades, there'll be a rest home circle where you will find many like-minded persons, and can yell at your Grandchildren: "Hey, you want 5 dollars? Tell Grandpa...who shot first?-and it better be Han Solo or you're out of the will!!"
Chris Pollitt haha... oh dear. 7 - yes. 8 - The Last Jedi: A Star Wars Parody. What’s worse, JJ is going to polish the turd he’s been left with, rather than wipe the shit away first.
This post didn’t age well
@wespozo
Never temp fate.
Unless you said it ironically that is. Then you'll totally be fine.
I am so sick of hearing this!!! I love Patton, but the movie was entertaining as shit!!! Plus it was like two movies in one!!! I've never described another film like that! I've watched it more than the originals...so...
What actually sucked, and/or what ruined the film for them, was their expectations of it!!!
It's like any movie, that you were expecting to be just like the book...It's always going to disappoint you!!!
Timothius Zamora Glad you liked it but even Lucas has publicly stated the prequels were atrocious.
I am not a big fan of star wars, I don't even like the originals that much, and I still thing Phantom Menace was terrible. My younger brother, a teenager, hated it.
I like more the Force Awakens.
TPM is flawed. George Lucas & ILM had 20 years, 20! They could have created a better crafted film. Anakin(Jake Lloyd) was way too young. The Jar Jar sidekick was awful & ruined the first act. 🎬📽👎. The CGI & SFX were impressive. The pod race scene makes it worth viewing but the final battle & the acting fell way flat...
I waited in line for 13 hours to get the tickets (internet existed but they were not selling movie tickets online yet). No reserved seating yet. I remember being completely open to whatever was about to happen onscreen and just being let down, thinking "WTF?". Years later I saw a 90 minute review of Phantom Menace that truly goes deep into what's wrong with this movie, and it's done in a dark comedic way. I highly recommend it: ua-cam.com/video/FxKtZmQgxrI/v-deo.html Although it's comedy, all the points made are 100% valid.
