  • My Customer dropped this 20 hp Mercury after he tried to repair the pull start himself. He bought many new parts to replace the worn out components. After several unsuccessful attempts he asked me to see if I could get it to work correctly. These can be a little tricky to get them right so watch this video and maybe it will help you get yours working again.

    Thanks for the help! My rebuild was a success. This 1974 merc shall be water bound once more. Amazingly we can still find parts and rebuild these great motors.

    Thank you for the video. I inherited my dad's 1974 mercury 200 20 horse outboard. I tried several hours getting the pull cord right. I could get it to grab but not retract. Then made adjustments and it would retract but not grab. I finally gave up. My son eventually got it right but I wasn't there to see how he did it. That thing is frustrating to say the least

    In the effort of avoiding trial and error, do you know if there is a complete setup sold (with the new spring, plates, bolt, etc) that is already assembled and ready to go?

      You could try eBay to buy a complete used one. You could also try www.marineengine.com and buy each piece individually. If you purchase the spring separately it will come bound using some sort of zip tie in order to assemble it the same way I show you in the video. I hope this helps good luck

    Hello.. thanks for this video . HOWEVER, i need to know how you attached to the rope to the plate. My existing rope is attached on the side ring portion before exiting ( i have pictures) the rope is very stiff and I don't know how i would get the new rope to follow the same path. Can't find any specific videos.

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  2 роки тому

      The rope must be the same diameter as the old. Also a new rope should come with a metal pin at one end that ties off with a figure eight knot. A Mercury Seloc Service Manual shows the ropes path in good detail. I would suggest purchasing one on-line at www.marineengine.com or eBay.

    My 2016 mercury 9.9 pro kicker pull cord will not pull out of the engine. The electric start works just fine, but the pull cord will not budge. I just wanna make sure that it works in case my electric is ever not working. If you have any tips, post them here. I think this video will help me get a sense of how this works and I will investigate very soon.

    I have a question. I have a Mercury 110 9.8hp that I have to replace the pull rope on Stupid me already took it apart and now I have to try to wind it back up. It’s exactly like this one your doing here except mine had the groove in the bolt with a washer that fits INS’s groin and then has a tab that sits down it too of assembly. So mine won’t wind like
    This one. I need help bad. I already got the top. When I try to rewind it I end up losing it and it spins back out on me. Pls help! 🙏🏼

      What direction are you turning the screw to wind it? You should be turning it counterclockwise to tighten it. You need to wind it until you feel it is about to spin back and lock it down . You just need enough tension on the spring to pull the rope back in. I hope this helps.

I realize how difficult it is filming but have someone help in the process. @@LivetofishOutboardRepair Thank you. I just picked up what looks like the same outboard and the recoil was jammed up. I took it apart and the spring has a tear in it and was all jacked up. From what I can tell from your video, someone had this apart and put it together wrong. I can't tell where the large wavy washer and "dished out" part you show at 4:05 goes (and a larger bushing). Mine had it mounted on the spring side. It certainly looks like yours is on the dogs side, but when I try it in that position, the d bolt won't seat right. • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  2 роки тому

      Goats Bee… the teeth are called dogs and they come out from centrifugal forces when pulling the rope. The dogs retract by via a small spring when you release the rope. They are held in using bow washers that allow the dogs to pivot. The bow washers are supposed to be replaced with new ones when servicing the starter.

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  3 місяці тому

      It's not a secret but you could purchase a Solac service manual and it will show you how to insert it for your particular model. Most of them use a stainless steel pin that holds the end of the pull rope inside the sheath.

    Thanks for the video, you make it look easy, I worked on mine for 2 hr and still not right, mine has a small return spring on one of the pawls (dogs) what a pain in the ass, thought I had it together and then I dropped the tab washer on the floor and cant find it, will have to get another, did you have two of the tabs on that washer going in the housing (down) and fold two (up) on the nut to lock the nut? also did you use the "pin" in the rope or just tied a knot? thanks again, maybe there is hope for mine and won't end up on the bottom of the lake. lol

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  3 роки тому

      Sorry to hear your having such a hard time with it. I know they can be frustrating at times. Both tabs should be down and at least one tab up to secure the nut. The pin was already installed on the new rope so I left it on. This particular model didn’t have a provision for the pin but it seemed to me to leave it as the last line of defense just in case the knot failed. Good luck!

    ok. I have the rope attached, I'm confused on how to tighten the spring. The "lock" washer won't allow the bolt to turn. your video (except for the elbow) made it look too easy.

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  2 роки тому +1

      Sorry about the elbow. You need to turn the nut and the bolt counterclockwise to wind the rope inside, then continue to turn the bolt counterclockwise but also turn the nut periodically in the same direction to keep tension on the spring. As you turn the bolt counterclockwise the nut will want to loosen so keep tightening the nut and you should begin to feel more and more tension on the spring. Once you have as much tension as you can hold with the screwdriver tighten the nut securely and lock it down with the lock washer. The lock washer tabs should be flat until you are ready to bend the tabs down and up into position.

    • @sbeckett1980
      @sbeckett1980 2 роки тому +1

      @@LivetofishOutboardRepair You can only do all that without the locking washer. The washer has that notch into the screw and latches to the top of the motor. Did you not use that washer? thanks

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  2 роки тому +2

      @@sbeckett1980 I use the locking washer but you must flatten it out first then re-install it. It should spin as you turn the bolt. Once you have adequate tension on the spring tighten down the nut and position the locking washer over the notches. Use a hammer and punch to set the locking tabs.
