CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Mouse alters the factory to make string cheese.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Gore Verbinski, the TV-commercials director responsible for the Budweiser frogs, directed this Adam Rifkin screenplay about two brothers (Nathan Lane and Lee Evans) who inherit a string factory and a decaying country home after the death of their father (the late William Hickey, in his last role). After moving in, they learn that the house has historical architectural importance and is valued in the millions. However, they are constantly tormented by a mouse within the walls. They engage in cartoon-like combat against the rodent, but it manages to outwit the brothers in successive situations. Both live and animatronic mice portray the title role, and some scenes assume the mouse's point of view. The film is dedicated to William Hickey.

A criminally underrated movie...one of the best things I watched as a child
omg same❤
Same!!!!
Agreed
You are absolutely right.
I can remember in December of 1997 when I was 5 my parents taking me to see this at the movies. My eyes were glued to it throughout the whole movie. Seems like just yesterday.
This ending rocks; Lars met a woman that actually appreciates him for who he is, Ernie got to be a chef again, and the factory stays in the family.
And in the end, that mouse became the string to bring them close together.
And ALso im sure with how the factory now look's, All shiny and stuff and Far more Clean, I'm also sure its now making a LOT MORE Money. Which is Great.
The mouse was probably trying to tell them that there was a way to save the factory
@@Blizzard-kf3qm Smuntz Sr did not understand that children should choose their own path. But one can’t help but feel sorry for Ernie and Lars for the fact that one could not win the respect of his father, no matter how hard he tried, and the second for the fact that he sacrificed his dreams because of his father and also because he was unlucky with his wife. Because of these circumstances, both of them were in pain and agony all their lives
@@christopherjohnson5236 The mouse also did this as a token of gratitude for the fact that Ernie and Lars did not kill it. Yes, they were given the opportunity to get even with the mouse for everything that it had done, but the brothers never did this, because it became a pity to beat a living creature with a shovel plus they realized that finishing off a living creature with a shovel while it is unconscious is too cruel. Everything is clear with Lars, but Ernie... I didn't expect that he wouldn't be able to finish off the mouse, because that's what he wanted most
A short and simple ending to one of my favourite childhood films with a very deep meaning behind it. Throughout the entire movie, the brothers were bickering at one another while trying to get rid of the mouse, so nothing worked because they were focused on themselves rather on one another, which caused everything to derail into one big mess, but when they started to collaborate together, they saw how good it feels to succeed in life with someone else helping you out by your side, knowing you're not alone.
Without something to tie you to others and connect you to family or friends, you'll always end up in trouble. "A world without string is chaos".
Wow I didn't connect that line to the friendship. Is it a real quote by the way or was it made for this movie?
@@helenarichard I would like to know that as well.
@@timeforgottenprince8271 I think it was partly in the movie the qoute I mean.
Came here just for the epic shot of the mouse looking down on the brothers.
Figuring out the true meaning behind a movie is the most challenging and fun to some people. Heck, from what I've seen, it made sense. They've both struggled with their respective careers and have found themselves bickering amongst each other due to their past as brothers. They wanted to secure their future financially, but have made questionable means to do so. By trying to sell the house financially, and there was the fact of the string factory they've inherited. The mouse became a foil because it lived in that house where their father used to live in. I don't know about the mice behind the reincarnation of the brothers' father, as I've didn't even know if their dad was that smart. I just assumed that it was a highly intelligent mouse that probably bore witness to the old man's final days and became only a foil to make the brothers realize something that's really important.
I love the part when Ernie discusses business with the mouse. So cute. :-)
Same here
I find it cute that the mouse decided to give Ernie and Lars a happy ending by opening up a cheese string ball factory for them after flooding their house considering that it shows that the mouse wasn't heartless and did an act of kindness after realizing that Ernie and Lars were miserable without a home! =)
They may have rebuilt the house at some point, although we never see it.
Doubt it. The house had no real sentimental value to them. It’s whole purpose was to be sold so Lars would have money to invest in keeping the factory running and Ernie to open a new restraunt. With the string cheese business both brothers get what they want so it would be pointless to spend an astronomical sum to rebuild it
All the mouse wanted was to survive . It was the brothers insane mission to kill it that caused all the problems.
it was returning the favor when they refused to kill it once they had accidentally knock in unconscious and instead just tried to send it somewhere else
I like that they hired the former employees who were all older gentlemen.
Lesser men would have filled the factory with dumb blondes just to be pervs.
A Truce. A Draw. Still better than Victory or Defeat. In the end, they all get to do something they love. The mouse gets to eat, Ernie gets to cook and Lars can make string.
Evil Gopher that's the best thing
And Lars is seemingly happy with Hilde. Instead of his golddigger ex-wife.
TokkesF yeah, if I were him, I’d rather be with someone who’s not greedy
And his ex-wife is happy too - she landed herself one of the rich guys from the auction. @@killermachinemaggot
I still prefer Victory and defeat Complete with looting the loser's home and possessions to vent my frustrations in hotheaded anger out on one for injuries suffered in the effort of the victorious skirmish and war prizes, and booty as a final blow destroy everything that is left or useful of said enemy according to the William T Sherman doctrine with no quarter given
That mouse wearing a mini chef's hat is everything
It's a very cute detail and is very adorable.
It reminds me of the Disney Pixar film, Ratatouille
@@nicosy282They probably got the idea from this movie IMO
This movie was dedicated to William Hickey whom the painting is based on. To see a painting of him smiling is such a nice tribute to a wonderful, talented actor.
He was ALSO on Seinfeld during the 4th season finale episode "The Pilot"
@@noelanderson969 During the filming of “Mouse Hunt,” William Hickey was already ill, but all his scenes were filmed, so the script did not have to be changed
I miss movies like this. mouse hunt, anastasia, hook, jumanji, the indian in the cupboard, the pebble and the penguin, all dogs go to heaven, small soldiers, paulie, the borrowers, a little princess (1995), black beauty, the secret garden, cats don't dance, the king and I, quest for camelot, etc, etc. (Pretty much all the kids and family movies of the 90's through the early 2000's) Anybody else agree?
thesnakeman8006 completely agree
Yeah Me too
Yes this movie is so much better for christmas as well compared to that out of hand irony of broadcasting the unfunny home alone
@supernova girl The 2nd one wasn't as scary though.
All dogs go to heaven? No, Pitbulls always murdered innocent children and other dogs
That mouse's Chef's hat is just adorable.

Do you want to know what I've been thinking?
The mouse was probably Ernie's and Lars's father "Rudolf Smuntz" reincarnated as a mouse and he helped his sons find a future for Smuntz String...with cheese!
turtlelover789 Yep, and "A world without string is chaos" always brought a tear to my eye by the end, because 'if you don't have something to join you together, you will break apart.'
Or... Rudolf Smuntz possessed the mouse.
Or maybe, Rudolf Smuntz kept that Mouse as a pet and trained him before he passed away.
@@phillipwalling7470 It's quite a mystery.
But all in all, I'm glad that things had worked out well for Ernie and Lars in the end.
I think that too
This is a timeless classic film, this brought tears to my eyes, whenever Lars and Ernie lost everything, they were gonna lose the factory and the mouse felt sorry for them, so he helped them and put the factory back on the map, the mouse turned the cheese into cheese string, Lars and Ernie looked up and saw the mouse, he was very cute, even their father on picture was smiling, this movie will always have a special place in my heart, it had heart and it had an excellent story, the people that do movies now, they will never make anything as perfect as this
Cult Classics are always great films
I think because of this movie, Ratatouille was created years later regarding a mouse. So this would be the origin of Ratatouille.
dudetocartman only Ratatouille is about a rat instead of a mouse
Well the ending is actually very simular to the end in Ratatouille!
@@BarberShave19 Disney still ripped it off
Pretty much
Both Linguini and Chef Skinner kinda resemble Lars and Ernie.
“I know some people who used a mouse for a spokesperson and it seemed to turn out pretty well”
Okay Timon we get it..
I couldn't believe it I heard his voice and thought he sounded familiar then i looked up the cast
Thought his voice sounded familiar!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wait, when he said that?
@@asturianix9820 Ernie Smuntz was played by Nathan Lane, the one who originally voiced Timon the Meerkat, and he said that near the end of the clip.
Think it means Ratatouille?
Some of these so called 'movie critics' dont deserve that title, this movie was great man!
They're perfectly worthy of their title. No, I'm not saying the movie sucked. I'm just saying that it's their job to point out what they consider to be negativities in a film. In my personal opinion, they're just cheap hacks that don't have anything better to do than try to prevent other people from enjoying films. They're trying to make everybody as lame as they are and the industry would be better off without them. That's why they're called 'movie critics' and not 'movie praisers'.
MrBraddles3128 well who are movie critics to say what makes a movie good. That's opinion not fact.

It's rumored that the reason Jeffrey Katzenberg greenlit this movie for DreamWorks was because he had just resigned from Disney and wanted one of the first DreamWorks movies to be about a killer mouse!!!
Their father knew his sons both had separate passions. One for culinary arts and one for the family business, so he found a way to bring them together in the afterlife.
The mouse with a tiny chef hat so so adorable ^^
i love the ending to mousehunt in a very drastic contrast to Titanic, titanic may have won many oscars but mousehunt really touches my heart in a way never thought of in my life, titanic was just a big distraction with a horribly sad ending and not everyone is crazy about all that mushiness between dicaprio and winslet
It took me a minute to realize why you were relating Mouse Hunt to Titanic
Sevv9220 Could you please explain it to me? Lol
They came out almost at the same time. Titanic was all the rage, this was a cute little movie passing by.
0:42 I like that shot of the mouse.
the mouse was like "no thanks are necessary guys"
So cute...
Ali Gracida I know right?
I am king of the wooooorld
Soooo adorable xx
A world without string is chaos. Such a good feel good funny movie. One of my favourites around Christmas every year 🥰
I'll just bet that the new string cheese factory is called "Smuntz Bros. String Cheese" with the little mouse as the factory's official mascot wearing a chef's hat while holding a needle in his right paw and some string cheese in his left that is tied on to the needle backing up to a string block next to the mouse on his left, parallel to the "La Ratatouille" sign at the end of the eponymous Disney movie of the same name.
Oh my god, that's brilliant! I can imagine what you are describing in my head right now! You should write AND direct a sequel!
when I see the portrait smiling I tear up
The music from 1:30 to the end is amazing and fits well with the ending. Alan Silvestri knocked it out of the park
What’s cool is that this mouse is the original Remy(ratatouille) lol 😆. I love this movie! I watched it all the time when I was a kid. It never fails to make me laugh. I wish somebody made string ball cheese like that in real life. That looks so good 😋
Its a shame they NEVER made string cheese like this today. Pretty sure people would try to buy LOADS of it in that form
DreamWorks should definitely do that
I agree
0:38 - 0:41 - That stare of him was just like saying "So the little rat is still alive after all we've been through" and "You're a genius,a pesky little genius"
It's actually a mouse.
This is how cheesestrings were invented 😂😂
I feel moving how the two brothers made peace with each other, the mouse, and especially their father. It takes humility and courage to do it. Very sweet ending.
Tom and Jerry? Ratatouille? You get both in this movie!
And don't forget home alone, and the three stooges
Probably my favorite part about this film is it's ending - it's so simple not only in tying up the plots loose ends but in finding a way for everyone to be happy
0:40 It's so Cute and so Adorable that Little Mice 🐁. And this Ending makes me Cry of Happyness :')

I can’t believe this movie is 22 years old. I remember seeing it like it was yesterday. Amazing. Good movie.
With the string cheese factory being a hit everyone gets what they wanted: Lars to keep the factory running and in the family name, ernie essentially has a new restraunt being able to develop new recipes and the mouse gets a roof over its head and nobody trying to kill it.
One of my favourite childhood comedy films.
I loved this film and what it stood for. Even the child in me loved it . Still does.
Mouse hunts ending always makes me smile from ear to ear.
i understood that reference.
That mouse is so and ever will be cute!
One of my childhood movies. And it have a room in my heart
One of my childhood movies that actually touched my soul especially da ending.
The mouse ended up being the bigger man, he's the one that made them a peace offering.
The movie made it pretty clear the mouse was abnormally intelligent. I think near the end he realized that, while he got his revenge on the brothers for kicking him out of his house, it meant they all wound up with nothing. Everybody lost when they all tried to get their own way; only through negotiation and collaboration did they find a new way forward that proved fruitful for everyone. It's a lesson our current era would do well to heed, I think. :)
Lars-- it's string.
Ernie-- it's cheese!
They look at the machinery and see the mouse watching them.
Ernie and Lars together---
You gave us an idea!!
What if the mouse was their father? 😱
Thank god. I am not the only one who thought this
you mean like reincarnation
I was thinking the same thing too. The mouse probably was their father reincarnated and he help his sons find a future for Smuntz String...with cheese!
Not possible, because the father and the mouse were alive at the same time.
If you re-watch the scene where the Lawyer is first telling them about the house, he says 'you're father acquired it many years ago as payment for a dept. He never lived there, but it's interesting. It seems the pervious owner was found locked in a trunk in the attic."
Then when the cops are explaining about the exterminator. "911 call. No voice, but we heard screaming in the background. We found him locked in a trunk in the attic."
Either that one mouse has super intelligence and incredible longevity for a common brown mouse, or the mice pass their tricks on from one generation to the next. However, seeing as we only ever see the one mouse, I'm leaning toward the latter.
+Jon Bilgutay wtf
Remember when i was in the second grade i saw this movie i kinda cried at the ending but i didn't want to be made fun of lol 25 years later as a 31 year old man i kinda still do at the ending n one day my kids will love this movie so much as i did

I like to think that the rich guy that April ran off with earlier eventually broke up with her, and upon hearing how successful Lars is now tries to get him to take her back. But Lars, having finally learned how to stand up for himself, has had enough of her selfish crap, and tells her to get lost.
