  • For many years at the Reno Air Races Pilot Extraordinary Bob "RA" Hoover delighted audiences with his unique performances and amazing aviation skills, becoming one with the aircraft. Whether it was his Yellow P-51 or the Shrike Commander watching Bob Hoover was a treat for one and all. This clip shows Bob taking the Shrike through its paces, impressive enough with both engines turning, then with one engine out and finally with no engines, culminating in a perfect dead stick (no engines) landing and coasting up to the front of the main grandstand where he was greeted with a standing ovation by the thousands of fans in attendance. This event was captured by cinematographer Mark Chiolis for Skyfire Video, America's Storyteller. For more great aviation videos check-out the Skyfire website.

    I was one of Bob's ferry pilots for the Shrike. I flew it from airshow site to airshow site for many years. It will be 20 years ago tomorrow (October 10, 2003) that Bob and I flew it on its final flight to the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy center at Dulles airport in Washington D.C. Bob honored those of us that helped him with airshows by painting our names on the nose of the Shrike. Sadly, two weeks from now (October 25th) we lost Bob forever. The greatest aerial demonstration pilot the world has ever seen and probably ever will see. God speed and good tail winds old friend.

    That slight touch down of the right strut , climb out w/a dirty roll ... actually a dangerous maneuver for any Pilot with thousands of hours. Unless I missed where to look for footage , Mr Hoover owns the bragging rights to this Performance maneuver including others in Propeller type aircraft.

    Imagine Bob as your commuter pilot on a Monday morning connector, what a wake up that would be.

    Bob: I request emergency landing both engines are off!
    Tower: can you pls do a flyby, make a Looping and then a 8 point roll, after that skimming the taxiway with your left wheel before your landing?
    Bob: Sure.

    I watched that performance. After landing with engines off he rolled all the way back to the center of the runway and stopped in front of the grandstands. The airplane is now in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in Washington DC.

    He would have been 74 when he flew this. When did this guy finally stop flying?

    Why was he doing the maneuvers with wheels down at the beginning of the video? Just curious...

    • @kenhurley4441
      @kenhurley4441 6 років тому

      He usually touched just one of the main gear wheels on the runway.

    • @c182SkylaneRG
      @c182SkylaneRG 5 років тому +1

      @@kenhurley4441 Yeah, I've seen video of him touching one main gear, rolling for a few hundred feet, then switching to the other main gear, rolling for a few hundred feet, then taking off again. I was expecting him to do that in this video, but it looks like the wind was being uncooperative, and rather than gently rolling, he kinda bounced the one wheel and had to get going again without getting to do the other one.

      The maneuver is called the "touchdown roll and touchdown" A rare maneuver usually never seen due to its complexity.
