I've had the priveledge of flying an identical Commander 114 for 23 years and 4500 hours, all across the country and through some pretty challenging weather. This bird is built to take it and bring you home safely (presumeing you keep your head on straight.) She's never let me down. Wonderful to see here what a total pro can do with the 114.
I envy you!! I have a few hundred hours in a warrior.
But a 114, cheesus, I'd love the opportunity to fly one!!
Is it as easy to fly and nearly as forgiving as it appears?
With the proper training?
People have no clue how incredible this demonstration is
His complete understanding and Mastery over energy management in flying is legendary and second to no one.
With that Mastery, most of these Maneuvers were performed with less load on the airframe than when parked on the ramp. A legend who will never be forgotten...
It’s all about energy management!
What modifications would the aircraft (Commander) have required to be FAA certified as "fit for for aerobatic manoeuvres?"
There was no indication in the film that the aircraft had any difficulty performing anything the pilot asked of it. Are the requirements now the same as they were then?
What I'm getting at here is this: is it possible the aircraft could have easily (or relatively so) been fit for certification as suitable for aerobatics but not submitted for the necessary testing.
@@larrymorley8968 Both the Rockwell Commander 114 and the Shrike Commander he flew aerobatic in, were FACTORY STOCK aircraft! They received NO modifications for his use, but were in the Experimental Category so that the maneuvers could be flown legally. I have a video of him in the Shrike, with a passenger in the right seat, pouring a glass of iced tea while performing Both loops and rolls. The aviation GOAT! Hammer
@@larrymorley8968 The issue is not holding the maneuvers once or twice, is holding them repeatedly
@@larrymorley8968
To answer your question; no.
Aerobatic aircraft must be designed for limit loads of +6/-3g and ultimate loads of at least +9/-4.5g.
Normal category is +3.8g/-1.76g.
A loop can be flow smoothly, and reach only around 3g. Bob Hoover was a expert pilot, who could fly an aerobatic routine without exceeding these aircrafts limitations.
With careful design analysis (having the manufacturers engineers available) Bob could also load the aircraft to be light, in a certain balance, to give himself up to +6/-3g strength. Because that load factor assumes a certain "gross weight" and if you are flying the airplane 500lbs or 1,000lbs under that weight, being a sole occupant with no cargo and minimum fuel. He could possibly exceed the +3.8g limitation.
I've heard from people who knew Bob Hoover, that those airplanes were constantly needing repair anyway. Lots of fatigue issues and cracks would develop. They had to be repaired often, which would be prohibitively expensive for anyone except the manufacturer.
I don't know what is more epic. His mustache, his flying skill, or that waka ja waka soundtrack.
Watching Bob Hoover was magic. As a young commercial pilot back in the 80’s he was inspiring. Seeing him do a barrel roll in a Shrike Commander ,into a dead engine. Doing the Impossible ,was what he did. Thanks for keeping his memory alive.
I had the honor of meeting Mr Hoover a few times , not only the greatest stick and rudder pilot ever, one of the nicest guys ever, a fine gentlemen
I worked at an airshow all day with this guy and had no idea who he was because he had such class and professionalism that he never acted like anything special. My loss but also my memory.
As a kid in the late 60's and early 70's this was my dream airplane. I had every poster I could find. It's the sexiest single engine built. I was lucky enough to be able to fly one from San Diego to Key West. Love this plane.
I love how back then they felt it necessary to tell us not to try emulate Bob Hoover’s manoeuvres ourselves! Like anyone in the world could come even close
No, but there are always fools that will try it who possess neither the mastery nor skill.
@@jimchandler6744 I think their was another guy doing stunts in cargo air craft
@@jimchandler6744Hold my beer...
@christopherrice6553 that was also Hoover!
The problem was that if you tried to do the same maneuvers and did not do them correctly you would likely break the plane.
Nobody was as good as Hoover! I had the privilege of working with him during airshows in my 20 years in the Navy.
To have a whisker of this mans talent, knowledge and experience!
Never saw this film of Bob demonstrating the 114 before. Thank you for sharing it.
Yep and l am another Thank you so much
To FAA: Hey can I do aerobatics in a Commander 114?
FAA: Are you crazy? Absolutely not!
I'm not crazy, I'm Bob Hoover?
waiver
But in th e1990's some cowards in FAA took away his licenses.. Maggots..
Is there any doubt he was the G.O.A.T. stick and rudder pilot? Had the pleasure of seeing Bob perform in the yellow mustang at an airshow just south of Houston in either 68 or 69. Bill Fornof and his F8F Bearcat performed that day also.
I've had the privilege of watching Bob Hoover demonstrations at the Abbotsford Airshow often through the 70's and into the 80's. The planes he flew was firstly the Twin Shrike Commander, but also that Beautiful yellow and black Rockwell International P-51 Mustang. He also flew an F-86 Sabre one year if I recall properly as I was just a kid.
Bob and Chuck back together again, God bless.
I was honored to meet and shake his hand and chat with Bob Hover at the Reno air races.
This disco music is amazing.
Bob Hoover, the legend at work.
Bob was an amazing pilot
Saw Bob fly this and the Sabreliner at a few Dayton International Airshows.
We'll not see his like again !
Extraordinary
That man was the best pilot everyone
I owned a 112TC .. it was a fantastic airplane.
In 1978 went to the factory in OKC and toured the Rockwell factory.
My plane was there.
A 1976 .. I got a great deal. It was repossessed and the factory did a complete upgrade.
I did some of these maneuvers, but not on purpose!!
Trailing link landing gear.
Smooth landings most of the time,
Quality built. I sold it in 1980 and bought a new turbo 210 Centurion. Bigger and faster!
He had so much trust in his people. His machines. His knowledge. That man had to have faith
Rockwell discourages anyone to attempt these maneuvers. Unless you're Bob Hoover, then knock yourself out! 😂
Absolute beast at the controls. Thank god for youtube.
What a fantastic airplane. So sad thatThis company isn’t around anymore
Phenomenal upload. Great video.
Always wanted one of these. Great lines and very comfortable. Passengers always enjoyed the large windows.
Saw Bob numerous times in the late 60's, 70's, and 80's flying the P-51, Shrike and even a P-38 (P-38 was the Shrike routine minus the dead stick part). Greatest stick and rudder man ever!
He even could taxi elegantly! 👍👍👏👏
Bob Hoover could do this demonstration in a Piper Cub. Nothing particularly special about the Rockwell....he's just amazing.
The greatest air show pilot, in my opinion I was lucky enough to see him fly the strike commander and the P51
Shrike ....predicted text Strikes again
I saw him at two airshows years apart. Simply incredible.
A great pilot and good friend.
I met Bob at the London air show chatted and shook his hand ( I never washed my hand for a week ! ).
Then he went out and took his twin up feather the props did a engine off double loop and barrel rool and landed
Hoover is one of the most skilled pilots who ever lived.
Truly mind blowing , I could understand Mr. Hoover doing these maneuvers in a P 51 but in a relatively low powered GA . aircraft it takes absolutely perfect control & precision .
He was THE Master of Energy Management.
She is still current and flying.
Bob Hoover was a great man.
WOW. This guy is new to me. My pop was a Yeager lover. So much IMMEDIATE RESPECT FOR HOOVER. Who else do I need to learn?? I like the documentary type stuff. jp
They worked together back in the day
*Well, you already know about the two GOATs. Everyone else pales by comparison. Cheers!*
If Chuck had fessed up to his rib injury before his historic sound breaking flight guess who the back up pilot was? YEP!
Current pilots with unusual skill:
Rob Holland.
Skip Stewart.
Also check out the Reno racing crowd. Lots of talent racing there.
Like the Commander. It sits high on the ramp. Trailing link gear for smooth landing and the cruciform tail is unique.
Power to weight ratio, and aileron authority gets the job done. The 114/115 continues to be the finest single engine aircraft available to the general public.
The GOAT.
One of the greatest pilots
Mind blowing!
very skillfull , unique , he is a legend 😍😍
The acknowledged MASTER of the Science of the Stick and Rudder! This looks like it might have been filmed at Reno/Stead. Anyone know for sure? Hammer
Airspeed management at its finest. It’s always fun to watch a master pilot. Flying becomes boring these days especially when you let the plane fly itself and sit with your hands in your lap. Fly the airplane yourself whenever possible.
When you finally earned your 'certified badass' credential, Bob Hoover was the one who signed it.
I think I'd be terrified to fly or sit in a civilian airplane the way Bob Hoover piloted it, worrying the wings would rip off.The ending roll says the FAA requires a special waver as the 114 is not certified for aerobatic maneuvers. Amazing.
Hoover rarely if ever exceeds plus or minus one G ...he's a energy management guru
well, you would've missed the best ride of your life, and lived. He damned sure wasn't gonna hurt himself.
@@mattf49006 It is not possible to loop an airplane without exceeding +1g.
A loop requires, at minimum, +3g on the initial pull-up and again on pull out. Most beginners try to get away with less than 2g on pull-up and quickly find out how it feels to stall, tail slide, and end up on your back inverted in a spin.
Bob Hoover the best dam pilot ever
He used to call up the control tower and say "Am I clear to roll on take-off". They usually didn't understand but he would show them!
These are fantastic planes! Being 6'1" and 220# I'd personally take a Rockwell Commander over a Piper Arrow, a Mooney or even a Bonanza (seriously even over a Bo').
If only they were as quiet on the inside as a "Bo" !!
I put my nephew in the back seat. 6’8 334 lbs. Comfortable for 3 hrs. Slept most of the way!
@@MrPlanecents What a shame.
The owner of the one on our flight line was the chief pilot, a retired WW2 pilot. He absolutely loved his, always spoke of it's comfort.
@@easttexan2933 mine is- maybe something wrong with the one you rode in?
A sixteen point roll for good measure, in a non aerobatic rated GA aircraft!
What a legend!
👍👍👍
damn, the whole oil pan is on the belly halfway through the video....
This airplane is still flying! Wonder if the owner knows about this ?
yes
Just plane Ha Ha Bad Ass Bob Hover. Watched him loved it.
The bravery to exit a barrel roll 15 feet from the ground!
i saw him once,never forgot
This airplane is still flying. I wonder if Mr. Hoover's history with this Commander adds to the resale value? I hope so. Quite a Provenance. Hopefully he signed the airframe.
It was be like owning a guitar that had been played by Eddie Van Halen!
Poetry in motion!!!!!
Legend. 3 pc suit and all.
Saw him in person doing things in his Shrike that were amazing.
I saw him fly aerobatics in a non-aerobatic rated AeroCommander at Transpo '72 at Dulles airport.
Owning this particular airplane now is like owning a guitar that had been played by Eddie Van Halen! The best ever has sat at those controls!
Used to fly in one of these all the time good old GNATT
Was this a " Robert Whitiker" machine ?
I want one!!
When you fly one you will think,HOW IN THE HELL DID BOB HOOVER MAKE IT POSSIBLE? He did, you will not want to.
those wing tips looked just a tad higher after bob got finished! :)
I was checked out in 114 years ago.. after watching this,, I'm a piece of dirt, a stepped on crushed piece of dirt. I just thought I could fly a plane, trained aerobatic pilot by Bill Kershner in Tennessee in the early 90s.. I'm a piece of dirt..
Bob was one talented pilot, I think he could do all of that in just about any plane with inverted oil and fuel systems added .
With all these maneuvers, he maintained positive G’s. I believe this plane was stock.
Watching Bob Hoover fly is like...watching Picasso paint.
Like the 70,s music
This Video is about Bob Hoover.
Excellent music.
I’ve have witnessed 3 time Bob Hoover at Air shows in Sacramento and Stockton, California. I think the wings are just a nuisance to him. He has a fabulous history. Shot down in WWII in Europe, held for about a year, escaped then stole an shot up Fu-190 airplane and flew to Netherlands. Bob Hoover was Test Pilot in anything that had an engine or not(Glider). Oh Y’a, one of his best friends some guy named Yeager and flew chase for Yager (for Years), when Yager flew something called the X1 (First Mach 1+ that was sugsessful). You must read contribution to Aviation! You won’t be able to stop. Find the clip where he pours water into a glass while doing a 360 loop, no trick photography!
Fearless
Best pilot in the world.
your seeing one world best
If given the chance this man could have flown aerobatics in the space shuttle.
Charlies Angels sounded like they were filming as well, cool
"This maneuver, I would normally only do in fighters..."
^^The "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" NASCAR sales pitch! 🛩
This particular aircraft is still around. I wonder if the owner knows of this historic flight.
Wish I could recall the tail number of the one on our line. Seems like ending in a "whiskey' may have been a trademark of sorts for this era of Rockwell? That is all I recall for sure on that one.
Yeah, incredible, on flight aware it was up on Wednesday!
*By now you can be assured he does.*
That was a pretty nice airplane I flew the 112 Which was Under power. And I beg you he never stressed that airplane Doing those Maneuvers What a great pilot he was and Human being. The plane later on the years developed a d, on the spar.
See all the oil on the belly and a puff of white smoke from the exhaust. These maneuvers should be at least all positive geez but that puff of white smoke a little bit of oil starvation it look like
That plane is still on the registry, owner lives in Owensboro, KY
BADASS.
Wow, those are some thick glasses!
That man sure could fly.....
I’m pretty sure Bob Hoover could have demonstrated the aerobatic qualities of a peach pit.
Watched him do a show in the shrike . AC / twin.
It’s all about energy management with a near empty plane!
Bob hoover what pilot . I still cring how the crupt goverment treated him very sad.
This plane was just flown two days ago.
Chuck Yeager called Hoover the best pilot he ever knew!
How bout that music ?
Mummy, Mummy, Mummy! I want one!
Towards the end I worked a 114B that had the weeping anti ice leading edges, RH was good , The LH they forgot to laser drill. I guess Quality was slipping a bit.......
Bob Hoover was possibly this best pilot who ever flew - he makes it look so easy, but it's not.
EXCELENTE PILOTO da SEGUNDA GUERRA MUNDIAL 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🇧🇷
