if you see any games its ok to take some time if you are injured no games cares for this delay tactic as much as badminton what if that person takes a small 10 sec break even for 10 to 20 times only 200 sec 3min not that much loss of time
Just officially give players more time to rest between matches and take more break during matches. Otherwise most of them had no choice but to abuse the medical break rule to gain rest time. It’d be interesting to see the actual implementation of this new rule on Medical Emergency Intervention - “The Tournament Doctor is now allowed to enter the court without the direction of the referee in case of suspected cardiac arrest….” It seems to put tournament doctors responsible to make that decision / move in such situation while it’s been all the while the referee’s responsibility. The reality is, the tournament doctors at many BWF sanctioned tournaments are sometimes physiotherapists or even nurses instead of real doctors. Suppose you are one of these tournament doctors, would you be comfortable to take such responsibility?
If the medical personnel see a player on the ground and the umpire is indicating a medical problem, they should then go immediately to that court. As badminton athletes (,excluding veterans) are very fit, players needing instant medical attention are extremely rare.
If I remember correctly, the whole idea of speeding up play time was to make it feasible for more live telecast and indirectly generate more sponsorship. But has this approach succeeded? Badminton has to gain popularity with good games first and foremost, excite the audience and money will come. With live streaming nowadays, longer playtime isn't an issue anymore, it would not affect the broadcaster's program. Just look at soccer and tennis, timeouts are common. The umpires and tournament referees should be given autonomy to use their discretion in deciding if treatment is needed, an injury is an injury, cardiac arrest or just a bruise. Get real Hoyer!
I can see how this prevents players from faking/delaying but it also punish real injuries. Only way I can see to fix this is if you fake/delaying/real injury then you loose a point.
That’s what card should be in badminton. If the empire see the player abusing the rule to rest then award them with card worthy of them delaying the game. Like football if you delay restarting the game you will get yellow card.
If someone retires in a match, they are out of the tournament, regards of if they could win the group or not. If you have a very small injury which could be OK by the next day, you need to continue. If you would go to the KO stage even if you lost, it might make sense to continue and limp around.
Why the people who made the rules didn't know the consequences? Any strict rule and law sure cause problem. One must always act according to situation, not law or rules.
In every sport, rules and regulations are parts and parcels of the game and every athlete has to adhere to it. However, when rules are created in such way that pose risks to athletes, then it should be relooked into. This could lead to an untimely end to a player's career or future if serious and genuine injuries are not quickly treated. Conversely, when players fake injuries to get a breather or second wind, such rules are justifiable. When both rules and health of players are equally important, the issue will always become a hot potato when genuine injuries set in. My take is to give the benefit of the doubt to the players who may want time out to seek medical treatment whether genuine or otherwise. After the match is over, BWF officials can then investigate. If evidence suggests there was a cheating on the part of the guilty party, appropriate punishment must be meted out accordingly.
Right, the way the game is played now on tile/wood is bad even for indoor sport, going with Tennis/good pickleball surfaces like the hard stuff the Tennis games have or indoor/outdoor rather than a wood or tile court, the type of rougher would help as well as allowing the players to not have to wear non marking shoes not needed in the sport and can wear grippier shoes. Racquetball and Squash no longer require non marking/minimal marking shoes for the sport on the pro level and is on a wood/tile court, volleyball does not require on a tile/wood court non marking but with most brands in Volleyball still make some models of shoes as non marking for schools mostly middle schools but some High schools as well not allowing marking shoes.
Cold spray only numbs the pain. But pain is important to stop players from pushing themselves for short term gain with long term injury. It is akin to doping or taking painkillers to push through the pain, it is bad for players in the long run. The best form of treatment is rest, which is, to give up the game.
As legend LCW admitted, even during his era, players manipulated and abused the injury time out call = waste time. How can I tell if one is genuinely injured or faked?
I remember Jonathan Christie injured and there is no proper wheelchair to carry him out. The guy carrying him even dropped him while sitting in a flimsy ""wheelchair"
With the current batch of officials at BWF, badminton is going backward by a hundred years. Shame on you BWF. Rubbish rules and silly draw lots system for the semifinals. 😡😡😡
agree with bwf, cold spray is a temporary fix and doesn't have any lasting benefits for the players. usage of cold spray has been abused to a point where banning it creates more benefits than detriment, so i believe it should stay
May I suggest, to implement an injury time-out. 1 number per game. Similar to the challenge system. Those faking the injury aiming to delay the game, is limited to 1 time per game.
I wonder how many of the BWF members were professional shuttlers or even professional sports people. And the same question goes for the refs. This makes me angry as well as sad for genuine players
Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, the BWF president, won gold at the Atlanta Olympics. Professional players don't become technical officials, but go more into coaching or association jobs, if they remain in badminton.
EASY, you can delay as long as you want and rest as long as you want and spray as much as you want... but you lose 1 point per 2 minutes, and you round up the resting time. For example, if you only need 25 seconds to spray, you round the time up, that's still one point. If you need more time, continue to lose points for the next set or until game is over. Why was it difficult to come up with a solution?
Instead of removing cold spray they shld have doctors check on the serverity of the injury and if they need cold spray or not or they can remove cold spray in matches and put a limit on cold spray in intervals
I think players should not enter into a tournament without worrying about their health. BWF is there to make profit & money from the sweat, pain and sometimes the life of players. So players your health and life are more important then the money and title given by BWF. Play in other non BWF tournaments don't let BWF monopoly the game. I also think billionaires in the world who loves badminton create a independent world class badminton federation.
There are very few non BWF tournaments that offer substantial prize money. If you don't play big tournaments you won't get sponsors. If you play tournaments not sanctioned by BWF or national associations, you will be banned from BWF tournaments. I also don't think BWF make a large profit, gains are plowed into development.
Just implement a minimum amount of time for players to be ready for the next point. Baseball in America has implemented a similar rule for pitchers and it appears to have a beneficial effect on flow of the game.
Good rule. If can't handle the pain or really injured, stop playing! For player's health, only the uninjured should be allowed to play on court. Plus, this rule eliminates fake injuries. 👍
When rules are made by people who does not compete nor experience what any of the players experience, you can expect plenty of rules that sound nice on paper but far from it in reality.
Victor Axelsen complained about delay tactics meanwhile it is his fellow countrymen, Anders Antonsen, who abuses all kind of delay tactics. From delaying the serve to complaining about service judge coughing.
Of course it is a stupid rule. Every sport (football and rugby) do allow for such treatment.DO NOT SACRIFICE PLAYERS HEALTH AND SAFETY JUST BECAUSE A SMALL MINORITY TRY FAKING INJURY. DO NOT PUNISH PLAYERS WITH REAL INJURY JUST BECAUSE OF SOME FAKE ONES. FIND WAY TO PUNISH THESE FAKERS
I'm astonished by how few people seem to grasp that the cooling spray is not helping recovery in the slightest. It's actually doing the opposite: by numbing a particular area, it allows you to continue competing and potentially worsen an existing injury. Not once have I seen a case where a player had a major problem, got cold spray treatment and then went on to win. If you have a major injury, you shouldn't continue - this protects your health. If you have a minor niggle, you can ignore it until the interval - this has no impact on your health. All the complaints I see are people that don't understand cold spray and people that benefitted from players taking breaks for treatment (whether as delay tactic or to mask a relevant problem) - potentially even at the cost of the players' mid- to long-term health. I don't see any reason to take that Malaysian functionaire's statement at face value. If your players experience pressure due to this rule change, it's only because you haven't prepared them adequately. But that doesn't come as a surprise to me when many players don't even seem to know the rules for service or obstruction.
I still don't understand why the tournament doctor didn't come onto court without permission for Zhang Zhijie, the doctor normally has a view of all courts and would have been able to see there is something very wrong with a player is CONVULSING on the floor. But even if the doctor somehow didn't have a view of court this time how stupid was the umpire to ignore a player collapsing, not only that, but the opponent player, the coaches, everyone. Utterly disgusting ignorance from everyone surrounding that incident. If someone collapses it is an emergency you don't need to be a doctor to know that.
I doubt cold spray would even help an ankle injury. Giving the athletes a false sense of hope could eventually lead to even bigger injuries if they choose to continue.
It’s simply inhuman. Delays in game is inevitable. Every sport faces this issue. One can train to adopt to playing against opponents using delay tactics. Taking such steps of eradicating cold spray use is a direct threat to players health.
Better yet let the referee judge if the player's injury should be treated or not. If players are delaying, you would knoww but spraining ankle? Give em treatment
for a superseries schedule that arrange so tight in the calendar, this is purely bullshit control because injury was totally expected for tired player.
cold spray (or any spray) is not a medical treatment. it has no effect on pain, inflammation, or swelling. it has no medical effect of any kind. if players want it for psychological effect during breaks they can self-administer or a coach can administer it. but the rules should purge this delay tactic from the sport without mercy
It's really problematic since the players can get injured without treatment, otherwise some can abuse the rules to delay the match it the treatment allowed. For my suggestion change the rules, allow treatment with limit. Let say only one treatment in single set
It's clear for me. Less number of tournaments for players, e.g., rule to limit the number of tournaments for participating. Change the rating calculation rules. Give a rest day between matches. But, restrict any medical procedures during the match, except in the brakes like in boxing. Do you need serious medical care? Go out from the court to the hospital.
These rules are crue! There should be some ways to prevent the players using these rules to deliberately delay the game when they actually have no hurt.
Don't see how it's possible to decide if players really have pain or not (short of very big and expensive medical scanners, taking up to 30 minutes for a diagnosis).
What with that magic spray anyway, I have not noticed that being used in other sports just as much. Why don't players be allowed to cold spray themselves without doctor help?
Does cold spray actually do anything to treat the injury though? Or is it just a mask and allows a player to feel better while playing with an injury? If it's the latter then I can see how the ban still upholds the idea of player safety, because masking the pain while a player continues to play on an injured ankle for instance really isn't in the best interest of the players health.
Frankly I think before the rules have been changed the only solution is players prepare cold spray for themselves while protesting towards BWF. For those who play for national team the team should purchase these sprays for players. I mean if you got injured just use it by yourself and judges can't really do much, unless they're really mean and gave the player a yellow/red card. If the injury got serious enough that you can't even spray it for yourself then it's better to just retire the game.
Fried chicken is a wonderful thing to have. It’s pretty good. However eating too much of it isn’t good for your health. Likewise, playing badminton with little to no rest periods isn’t healthy for the players, forcing players to play up to 14 or more tournaments has the intended goal of having more games, but with the player’s fatigue catching up, the quality of the game decreases. Badminton fans like you and I, dont want more badminton we want better quality badminton, BWF has to do something about this.
there is a thing called umpires, it is their job to keep the match flowing. The rules needs to provide the maximum protection for the athletes. While the umpires use their cards to push the pace. with the current rules they are making the umpires more useless.
Players are "forced" by the system to play too many matches. Modern day badminton games are unlike those in the 1970s, games nowadays are so punishing'; players are running to all for corners of their respective courts, jumping and bending. It is indeed very sad to see players' limbs almost fully wrapped in plaster strips. Hope the organisers and sponsors will be more humane in future and not treat the players as money making machines.
Time to have a new faces in bwf.. Starts with Paul Erik Larsson, rules are created by bwf and is time to change, players life are far more important than their stupid rules..
@pauldodd2120 So what.. compare to tennis do u think u are more prestiges.. even RF and Nadal are allow for injury treatment time..unless if all racquet sports ruling said no treatment during match then all must follows... But u are the first to set such ruling without thinking of the repercussions..
All for TV ratings, advertising and time. BWF have to balance players’ safety and commercial success. Without the players, there won’t be sponsors. Tennis went thru the same thing. Now it’s figuring how to allow players rest during the match; like 90 seconds after 9 points or, 5 serve outs. This also allows air time for advertising and sponsors.
As I can see badminton as a game has turn into a '' monster '' of a sport , life threatening , injury prone and too punishing to the players -- short of killing them on court . Badminton is supposed to be a 'graceful sport 'and now it has turn into something else ! Zhang Zhi Jie's death may be the first casualty in a big tournament and as I see it , he won't be the last . Maybe BWF should consider reducing the number of points in each set to 15 points instead of 21 points to make the game more lively and for the players to recover enough to face tomorrow's game instead of a lacklustre game due to the tiredness in the players which is affecting their performance .
The practice of the new rules were like the thought of the human and animal. Humanize was to be thought to be wiser, but animal only can felted the negative side of the human. Hence, If there is no interesting matches, who wants to watch the game? If there is no audience, who wants to become the sponsor? The same thing also, If there doesn't have superstar players, what is the value of the BWF???
Remember, cold spray doesn't cure injury. No, it masks pain and partially reduces inflammation, making a player more comfortable to continue, whilst the injury damage is still present and possibly worsening by playing on.
I just read other comments. Some people said its better to give up than make the injures worst and takes longer to recover. Because spray is only to limit the pain and not heal the injures. There is one thing. Almost everybody want to win and go to the next stages and if possible win the tournament. Specially if the price get higher for each stages. For example(true story): I won the first set. On the 2nd set i got pain on my shoulder. I cannot smash as hard as on the first set. I want any treatment possible, like spray. To be able to perform without/ignore pain. As long as i can beat my opponents at that moment and go to the next stages. How many stage, i dont care. Higher is beter. Its my responsibility if my injure become worst on the next stage. After i got spray treatment i dont feel pain(temporally). I can push body and hit smashes as hard as the first set. Guess what, I won.
Cold spray is allowed to be applied by the player, coach or other team member under the current rules during the intervals. The tournament doctor will not apply cold spray during the match.
Why not a 5min ice and stretch session? A player who is injured is going to be less effective, anyway... Any athlete, like tennis players might go through the same sort of thing... Retirement is usually likely. But like in tennis, a medical time out with doctor 's help and advice given... The opposing player advanced... No controversy in this process... Tennis already uses it. The opposing player will know how to keep themselves warm....
So the umpire thought Zhang ZJ was faking a serious injury? That's why he didn't get medical right away? I suggest if someone fakes a bad injury, he loses a game or the match. Then players would thick twice about try to fake it.
No matter what the rules, the referee should not rush the players back to the court while the doctor is still checking with the players. No players want to lose a match, not to mention to lose a point. BWF should just change back the old rules but with some adjustment. Only doctor or referee can determine whether the player can ask for medical assistance such as ankle twist or muscle cramp. No treatment if the players suddenly ask for medical assistance without obvious any accident during the match. Even some tennis players abuse their medical time out just to interrupt their opponent in form
Kalau pemain bawa tissue magic gitu apa boleh dia usap sendiri yah? Walaupun nggk se instan cold spray sih efeknya. Peraturan yang aneh emang. Keselamatan pemain harusnya tetap paling utama. BWF bisa apa kalau pemain nggk berani main karena aturan yg aneh ini. Merugikan bgt.
OK, so on one hand some players abuse medical time-out. On another, now no medical treatment or time outs when the actual incident / injury happens, forcing players into dilemma of retiring, but can avoid more damage and pain or continue with the pain. I wouldn't want to be in that position. I don't know any other sport that forces players into that corner of a decision. It's cruel and detrimental to players well-being. It's like gladiators that have to fight or die... Personaly I think, that bwf should allow medical treatment any time during the game. But have some limits - maybe twice in a meeting, no more than 15 minutes. In tennis medical time-out are definitely used as a tactics, but overall it does not effect the sport as it's not widely used and called out after the fact. But it also protects players from further injuries. If someone will use too much (abuse), than have a mechanism to challenge them and fine them with money and points or even ban from competition. It won't illuminate the bad apples completely, but limit such behaviour. It reminds me of situation a while ago in the olimpics WD both Chinese pairs wanted to lose and they both were expelled from the competition as a result. This is a great detterant for players to try to fix results.
That is what happens when the board is filled with bureaucrats who have never set foot on a badminton court in their life.
Also those who overly abused the need are the one to blame. Its hard to find balance sometime.

Sounds silly, but players should do this to publicly detest, protest to show how this stupid rules for the whole world to see and gain attention on live TV. This way, yes the player lost the match but still be in the championship. Just like LZJ, he probably could recover to the semi.
All players should boycott this rule by doing the intention of purposely losing after injury.
I very much doubt that you can recover a seriously sprained ankle in one day, even with tape, but yes, he could have continued.
I disagree for LZJ to continue playing coz if LSF wins the 2nd match both hv to play a deciding game n this might further agrevitate LZJ's fractuted ankle
@@lenahew1761 Bruh, u don't get the point. LZJ still can smash standing on one feet. It's not hard to stand on his other feet and keep hitting all shuttle OUT on purpose during his opponent serve until u lose 2nd and 3rd match. He can even expedite it, by just letting his opponent to serve and NOT return the serve. It'll land in, and his opponent would gain points until LZJ lose 2nd and 3rd. Losing points is easy in badminton, gaining point is hard. LOL. Losing the match, but he still won't be withdraw from the Finals, and would remain in the championship into Semi. The main purpose is to rebel against this stupid rule, and show the whole world about it.
yea lzj was already locked in semis
@@darrenpang1318 fractured ankle can still play. Anyway u dun hv to comment here. U can comment on ur own post.
What a twisted logic
I disagree with this rule… comparing this to tennis, its inhuman
If someone retires in a match, they are out of the tournament, regards of if they could win the group or not. If you have a very small injury which could be OK by the next day, you need to continue. If you would go to the KO stage even if you lost, it might make sense to continue and limp around.
Extremely BAD rules maybe purposely designed to destroy both badminton and players should organise an alternative to replace BWF.
just change the president and his current committee thru elections by PLAYERS.
No. It is anti-inflammatory.
@@kumark214a little bit of cold spray.? Absolutely not 😂😂
As legend LCW admitted, even during his era, players manipulated and abused the injury time out call = waste time. How can I tell if one is genuinely injured or faked?
I remember Jonathan Christie injured and there is no proper wheelchair to carry him out. The guy carrying him even dropped him while sitting in a flimsy ""wheelchair"
BWF is a Mickey Mouse organisation, local leagues are run more efficiently.
It provided me with lasting benefits by curing my 30 year suffering of bursitis in 2 days.
Top players must all protest.
how about making rule changes where cold spray doesn't even matter? like each point is worth more and have longer intervals?
Bwf is really just messing with players at this point. as a player I feel this.
Even the new service rule is not needed.
May I suggest, to implement an injury time-out. 1 number per game. Similar to the challenge system.
Those faking the injury aiming to delay the game, is limited to 1 time per game.
Stupid laws
Stupid rules, they only hear what the european player request, but not the asian.
I think the players should play for other bodies and leave BWF. What a shame.
Or anyone who calls for a timeout will lose one serve; if the opponent is already on serve, then he/she has an additional serve
If injury has happened, no treatment can reverse that. More careful and stronger player will then will.
Instead of removing cold spray they shld have doctors check on the serverity of the injury and if they need cold spray or not
or they can remove cold spray in matches and put a limit on cold spray in intervals
You mean "maximum".
Good rule. If can't handle the pain or really injured, stop playing! For player's health, only the uninjured should be allowed to play on court. Plus, this rule eliminates fake injuries. 👍
Bwf no more like spotmanship😢worst rules
When rules are made by people who does not compete nor experience what any of the players experience, you can expect plenty of rules that sound nice on paper but far from it in reality.
Victor Axelsen complained about delay tactics meanwhile it is his fellow countrymen, Anders Antonsen, who abuses all kind of delay tactics. From delaying the serve to complaining about service judge coughing.
Victor does the same with his serve, just swinging his racket for 5 seconds 😮
what nonsense. the way Victor serves is absolutely legal@@dbdejonge2081
@@dbdejonge2081Well it is not a problem bc players has no problem with it
Of course it is a stupid rule. FIND WAY TO PUNISH THESE FAKERS
yup... really stupid law now
I'm astonished by how few people seem to grasp that the cooling spray is not helping recovery in the slightest.
I'd rather endure watching a few players abuse the spray than see them actually injured & untreated
Actually Asia can form own breakaway body to be independent from BWF. Top players are from Asia anyway.
Badminton Asia Federation (BAF)
Better form a new badminton body like Badminton Asia Federation (BAF)
BWF is dirty and corrupt. They only listen to EU players
I doubt cold spray would even help an ankle injury. Giving the athletes a false sense of hope could eventually lead to even bigger injuries if they choose to continue.
Badminton tournament rules is shit.
Give em treatment
this law treat human like a badminton playing machine no ?
for a superseries schedule that arrange so tight in the calendar, this is purely bullshit control because injury was totally expected for tired player.
cold spray (or any spray) is not a medical treatment. it has no effect on pain, inflammation, or swelling. it has no medical effect of any kind. if players want it for psychological effect during breaks they can self-administer or a coach can administer it. but the rules should purge this delay tactic from the sport without mercy
It's really problematic since the players can get injured without treatment, otherwise some can abuse the rules to delay the match it the treatment allowed. For my suggestion change the rules, allow treatment with limit. Let say only one treatment in single set
Treated like small kids. Umpires are headmasters. Just follow the tennis rules. Now the players need to bring doctors in their team.
Don't see how it's possible to decide if players really have pain or not (short of very big and expensive medical scanners, taking up to 30 minutes for a diagnosis).
that's way I refused to do competitive games. I sit and watch others pain it out.
What with that magic spray anyway, I have not noticed that being used in other sports just as much. Why don't players be allowed to cold spray themselves without doctor help?
They are allowed in the interval to apply cold spray.
If this cannot that cannot , why not just banned it no injuries time for badminton players just walk over and that all
Does cold spray actually do anything to treat the injury though?
Badminton fans like you and I, dont want more badminton we want better quality badminton, BWF has to do something about this.
what if they are the player are they happy
there is a thing called umpires, it is their job to keep the match flowing.
So Badminton simply become gladiator match ???
simple, If a player is hurt, sjould step down to avoid further injury.
If the opponent agreed to let the injured player to do treatment then is not a delay tactics right.
Time to have a new faces in bwf.. Starts with Paul Erik Larsson, rules are created by bwf and is time to change, players life are far more important than their stupid rules..
Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, the BWF president, won gold at the Atlanta Olympics.
It's a stupid rules and unfair for the injured players. It should be abolished. Players safety is most important..
Somehow don't really understand your point.
hmm no cold spray, but okay to waste more time for official diagnosis?
Question is how would we know if player is faking the injury ?
Remember, cold spray doesn't cure injury.
No, it masks pain and partially reduces inflammation, making a player more comfortable to continue, whilst the injury damage is still present and possibly worsening by playing on.
It does certain injuries such as inflammation.
@kumark214 Lol, 🤣
'Inflammation' is NOT an injury. It is a symptom of injury or illness.
Treating just a symptom, is masking the injury.
if they don't relax the rule than at least give the empire the right to enable its usage when he/she deem it to be valid/necessary.
Should allow cold spray at 11points and injured player should hit the shuttle out to reach 11points for interval
No cold spray but you get cold heart treatment instead. How ridiculous!
Thanks to BWF legislative system, more players switch to Pickleball.
Can't see any of the top players switching.
It seems that BWF message to the players play at your own risks
stupid rule! Period!
then make soccer player also no injuries treatment. the badminton player already no rest continue playing every competition.
This is a Gladiator laws.....win or die ....😂😂😂
Getting the Referee and doctor to come on court will always give a delay of at least two minutes.
Kalau pemain bawa tissue magic gitu apa boleh dia usap sendiri yah?
Walaupun nggk se instan cold spray sih efeknya.
Peraturan yang aneh emang. Keselamatan pemain harusnya tetap paling utama. BWF bisa apa kalau pemain nggk berani main karena aturan yg aneh ini. Merugikan bgt.
These guys sound unhealthy. It's not even really a sport
So stupid ah, bwf
time to call on strike against BWF
