She absolutely lost her temper and has paid for it ever since, but her reaction was human and IMO justified.
Note also, however, the prince's standing order to Cynthia and Wyatt. If her brother gets assassinated...

Wow!!! Little Princess Clara went from mature teen to hardened adult very suddenly. Her explanation of what the nobility was supposed to do makes it clear that the nobility was supposed deserve the respect and obedience of the commoners instead of just demanding it. She earned her reputation with righteous fury.
I’ve been reading science fiction/ fantasy since the mid sixties,from Adam’s through Zelazny and I am ENJOYING this tale. Well done, well done indeed!

Can I just point out one little detail, 13 year old Cynthia went through enough nobles to give her black armour sufficient coverage to turn it red ... 13 Year Old, I have said previously she is at least as good as two Royal Marines, I think this just proved it

This is the best story I think I've heard in many many years. Needs to be adapted into a film series
The filmmakers won't have it easy though. They would have to stay true to the story and raise the bar with their production and the bar is quite high already.
But it would be great to see the Black Ship on the screen!
I think there are too many things that they would have a hard time getting past the people that control what can and cannot be shown, the death of Wyatt's childhood friends, the brutal killings by 13 year old Cynthia, you can put those in a book and it adds to the background but putting them on film or a series is much harder to achieve, maybe an animated series, but these are already so long as an audio book you'd have to chop a lot out for a series
Have i already said how much i love this story? The way all those characters are developed, the way the whole universe is slowly but firmly being shown to us is just amazing and honestly, even beautiful.
I thought that story was about how the coup started, but wow, a Clara's backstory is actually immensely welcomed too.
I shall keep being loyal to house Astor and to the principality till this series end :)
I figured it was an extreme event that got the ladies their names. I like Milkades even more. Great character development. Imagine the princes reaction. No wonder why the current prince trusts her so much and why she was a high value target.

Another reason to love Clara, the prince and their retinues. These are the actual nobility. Noble in action rather than title. Clara terrifies the nobility because she is willing to hold them responsable to the duties they have long forgotten. And her reputation is now a weapon she has no problem using as seen with the pirates. They did not question that she would execute the children if they didn't talk.
The reason things went well with Uriel Hoaks was that he treated Clara as an equal and not with fear. Once he decided that she was competent and began to openly negotiate with her he went on her nice list.
All the nobs at the "party" only saw Clara as a living landmine terrified of getting too close or she might go off and exterminate their houses. Thus demonstrating that they don't know their responsibilities to their people. Wyatt's proximity to Clara and Cynthia at the "party" has probably marked him as another weapon in Bloody Clara's arsenal. The mental image of the three of them standing there watching the tipsy honeytrap fall in front of them and not even twitch to do anything about it would feed right into their heartless reputation. If they knew nothing of Wyatt before, he's now seen as a bird of a feather with them and his headshot in the duel should make them just as nervous to interact with him as with Clara and Cynthia.
So this is how Clara gets her rep.... you go girl, they fucking deserve it

What was that line from Clara? something like "kill them all, even the babies in the womb". Merrrick1588 you are a bad person for saying "they fucking deserved it". Clara is clearly a terrible person who holds groups responsible for the crimes of the few. A royal family is a family like any other, all be it with more incest. What is a race other than a large family with a lot of incest? This mentality of group blame is the driver of humanity's actions at its darkest moments.
Girl??? Think metamorphosis. Now lesser beings Tremble and Fear her wrath of retribution. Think Warrior Queen.

Just let that sink in for a moment, Clara has the authority to effectively order anyone's death by reason of the fact that she is a Princess of House Astor and Wyatt is the only person other than her older brother who can stop her, a man who was until recently a commoner, that is how much the Prince trusts Wyatt that he orders him to protect his younger sister from herself
Well, it turns out that my theory of the black box was correct.
I didn't expect it to be a plague but atrocities in any event.
I still loved these two episodes.
We now know the reason for the nicknames, no more guessing.
No one knows how they would really react to the circumstances unless you were in that position at that time.
I liked how she told Wyatt what the true meaning of the term Nobles lead and commoners follow. It makes more since now.
I can't get enough of this series. Great job by all involved. Love it.

I happened on this story by accident and I can't wait for the next chapter. Thank the author and very high praise for the story. Not crazy about the AI reader. A human would be better. The story is great and I would love to have a book copy of it.

Wyatt Clara and the Prince all get what they've been looking for years to find. Wyatt gets friends, Clara gets someone to knit with and a private fighter pilot. And the Prince gets someone as bad as himself at chess. Cynthia? A knitting teacher?

Yep they would strip mine it of any authenticity. Rhe whole point is it set in a universe of rigid class bigotry ans prejudice, but seems to have no racism, apart from to aliens. I think first contact will have that effect on humanity.
For those that are offended by Clara's actions I will point out she was only 14 years old at the time and somewhat overwhelmed to learn that the families concerned had just effectively killed billions of men, women, children and babies and frankly didn't care. She basically lost her temper. Also why do you think that her brother the Prince gave Wyatt his orders to protect Clara from herself and did so in front of Cynthia after reminding Wyatt of his Oath that he would not harm the innocent, the Prince has given Wyatt the authority to stop Clara from harming the innocent should she ever get that upset again. A lot of trust for the Prince to be placing on a young man who was until very recently a commoner. Also we are getting this flashback just before they decide the fate of the Pirates who Wyatt hates almost as much as the Drazzan, that is surely no coincidence

Because it had been a bit since I played Ch 37 I was a bit confused at what was going on. Once I got to the end I realized this was an explanation of why the princess was hated.

Yup flashback, I suspect we are getting that here before the fate of the Pirates and the Pirate kids are decided, don't forget that Wyatt wants to kill them all except the very youngest, because they were already killers, and it appeared that Clara didn't, I think there will be talks or even arguments between the two as to the fate of the Pirate children and I think we got this chapter to show just how brutal Clara has been in the past

Great chapter part! For me the 2A Graphic version wasn't as bad as the Drazan chapter. I thought the first part (the other 5minute video) wasn't even graphic, just a bit disgusting at most (my opinion).
Yeah, Wyatt's memories about the Drazzan were even more disturbing than this
The Drazan story is really quite graphic the description is proper of a horror - sci fi good movie.
I think that Clara's story is very different for the amount of lives lost due to the indifference of the nobles and the punishment that she inflicted on them, and event that transform a child into adulthood, excellently written.

Few reasons. No one’s left to avenge. Power move to warn other houses. Reminds me of feudal Japan.
They didn't, but in a society that still acts like "noble blood" means anything, anyone with the same blood is guilty regardless of actual physical involvement.
This is a very typical response throughout all of human history. The reason to go that scorched earth is not revenge or justice. It is an object lesson. As Voltaire said "Pour encourager."
I lost all respect for Clara because of that. She's no different from the evil nobles that allowed the virus to grow.

As time passes, wyatt looses his humanity and becomes a obedient dog of her.
His eye colour change similar to a Husky might just be the first indication of him turning into a loyal dog of Clara.

isnt smallpox just a common cold for cows ? so the virus on those planets might aswell just be a common illness befalling an animal there and "simply" jumping the species barrier and the human system goes totally haywire like with smallpox altho more extreme
No cowpox is what you are thinking of, it's a much less dangerous but similar disease to smallpox, which is both virulent and deadly (or at least used to be) A Doctor called Edward Jenner heard that milkmaids who caught cowbox did not seem to catch smallpox and after a series of experiments involving giving a child cowpox by transferring it from milk maid to child he then tried infecting the child with a very mild smallpox (this was how they tried to protect against smallpox a technique called variolation) and it failed to infect the child not just once but many times, the latin name for cowpox is vaccinia from where we get the term vaccine
Oh my sweet summer child, you need to research on the horrors Smallpox brought and how it actually united humanity into basically exterminating that disease because it was so horrific.

I have followed this story since the start and have loved every second of it. There hasn't been once that I have disagreed with anything. Until now.
I get this is just a story and maybe I am looking too far into it but why is no one concerned about how many innocent people she ordered the deaths off?
I agree that those involved should have been killed, but children and unborn babies who's only crime was to be born into that family? Did they really deserve to die? Why did the children have to be punished for the sins of the father?
Like I'm not surprised other nobles are staying clear, I would. Clara shows no remorse either like "so that wyatt is how I ordered the deaths of so many with an unknown number of innocent people. Oh and children were also killed because you know."
It also slightly annoys me that he just accepts that like "yeah I see no problem with this?" Like I'm sorry? Dude you are supposed to be a voice of reason.

Because she was a 14 year old probably on the first major mission for her father and those families she killed were responsible for the deaths of multiple planets full of innocent people, literally billions, but thuis is how she ended up being called the reaper, I think she realises that she went over the top now 9 years later and her elder brother the Prince certainly does thus his orders to Wyatt to protect her from herself

@@johnhunterret4656 Because Royalty out ranks nobility and their (everyones) mindset is conditioned by years of training that commoners obey nobles and nobles obey royalty and unfortunately there is plenty of precedent for families being wiped out by rivals in other noble houses or for that matter by the commoners - look what happened to the Russian Tsar and his family

I hoped in this ethical book Clara and others would realize that: all who can handle and lead their house just would be king. Moral and ethical just people who value freedom must realize: We're king, like Weking did the freepeople/ Frisians used to say. (W=V, like Ph=P) Humans always had Kings/All father/Folk mother, freepeople/nobility and labor slaves/citizens. The freeed slaves/State Company citizens must always be set free or killed. Most people today are laborslaves/citizens and by etic, moral and knowledge they can be freeed, than by land and start a house like a king. I wish to see more inspiration from (The Oera Linda) history book from Altlantis sunk(2193BC +2024= 4217 years ago) till the Phoenician/Roman Kahns enslaved Europe and started their VatiKahn time line for their slaves/citizens. Few Germanic with knowledge remain in the 4th milenium timeline with knowledge about All fathers/ Folk Mothers, free/nobel people and laborslaves/citizens. Knowledge about how it (secretly) works or even Law ILO169, UNDRIP and the UCC would really upgrade an enjoyable bookstory like this.
