Now I know where Gilels got his inspiration, however both him and Richter aren't a match for Sofronitsky's deep architectural passion on this piece. The clarity of each note and chord are pressed with confidence and uncanny precision, demonstrating an ease of playing and the famous (and rare) golden touch that would be inherited by Gilels. Superb. Upon hearing of Sofronitsky's death, Gilels lamented saying that the greatest pianist in the World had died. Indeed, Sofronitsky received a great gift from God, incomparable.

This is one of my favorite recordings ever among all these exquisite pianists! There is such depth and power combined with a tenderness to Sofronitsky's wonderful and amazing performance of the Schumann "Symphonic Etudes" Op. 13. This is a heavenly experience, to listen to Sofronitsky and all the imaginative and beautiful playing he shares with us, his listeners. His technique is beyond belief, and his musical expression divine.
We are so lucky to have recordings of Sofr playing live .artists often do things they would not do personal ideas they wouldn't do for a document left for posterity . The Russians had such great respect so much was filmed and recorded !Radu Lupu is otherworldly and insuperably imaginative in this music .

The best interpretation is, in my opinion, by Alfred Cortot! It touches the essence of music, it acquires an extra dimension, respectively the music becomes transcendental! Sofronitsky's interpretation is exceptional, obviously above Richter's!

His students in his private studio numbered in thousands, including the most famous pianists - Jeffrey Biegel, Lawrence Schubert, Billy Joel and Deborah Gibson. He recorded all of the Op.8 Scriabin Etudes, Rachmaninoff Preludes Op. 32 and Schumann Symphonic Etudes. He performed with all of the major orchestras and toured around the world, but focused more on his teaching. He taught piano at Hofstra and privately since 1960. He was a magnificent pianist on a similar caliber to Richter, Neuhaus and Sofronitsky. His focus was on the Russian principles of piano playing, which he ingrained from his own teacher Vera Maurina Press, who he studied with for over 8 years. She was a pupil of Emil von Sauer and Ferruccio Busoni. He also studied with Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard School. I will never forgive myself for not taking lessons with this great man.

THIS is emotion transcribed as music, as opposed to the bombast passed off by most modern pianists. Finesse, not just technique.
