Aaron Copland: Quiet City

- Cleveland Orchestra principal trumpet Michael Sachs and solo English horn Robert Walters join Brett Mitchell for a long-distance performance of Aaron Copland's 'Quiet City,' recorded to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the piece's premiere on January 28, 1941.
ABOUT THE PIECE
In 1939, Copland wrote incidental music for the play 'Quiet City' by Irwin Shaw, some of which he later worked into this ten-minute piece designed to be performed independently of the play. According to Copland, the piece is 'an attempt to mirror the troubled main character of Irwin Shaw's play,' who abandons his Jewishness and his poetic aspirations to pursue material success. The man, however, is continually recalled to his conscience by the haunting sound of his brother's trumpet playing.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Mr. Mitchell worked with Mr. Sachs and Mr. Walters from 2013 to 2017 while serving on the conducting staff of The Cleveland Orchestra, where Mr. Sachs has been principal trumpet since 1988 and Mr. Walters has been solo English horn since 2004.
ABOUT THE RECORDING
Mr. Mitchell recorded his portion of this video in Denver, Colorado, on January 8. Mr. Walters and Mr. Sachs recorded their portions in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 15 and 19, respectively.
Video edited by Angela Mitchell. Audio edited by Brett Mitchell.

Simply the best.
This sets a wonderful standard for the performance of this piece. Thank you for doing this.
Wow - thank you for these very kind words, Harold!
Wow, wonderful. Randomly clicked on this looking for Copland's "Quiet City," and am very glad I did. Lovely dynamics you all played with, such expression. Made me smile. Thank you.
Completely our pleasure! Thanks for listening!
Maravilhoso!!!!😍
Obrigado, Lorne!
Interesting how virtually all of the comments are about the quality of the performance (which is of course excellent). Few or none are about how we feel with the pithy solace of this in a pandemic context. In the case of "The Promise of Living" even weaker performances have their divinity, so the Holy Spirit is given the credit He is due as certain music transcends. In short, it was a privilege to listen to the three of you, but the reasons for that go beyond musicianship into the zeitgeist and the strength and awe that your playing harnesses, even though you are not the source of it... but conduits. It's more than OK ... I am in the same boat when I post here on UA-cam...!
Wow! Really great.
Thanks, Robert!
