I used to hike this with my dad when I was a little kid in the 1960s. Things sure have changed. Paradise Valley was undeveloped desert back then. And you didn't see very many people hiking up there. I miss dad, he took me on so many great adventures. Dad was a surveyor for Arizona Public Service, and did side jobs on the weekends. He surveyed the lots for Paradise Valley Country Club, and surveyed the first power down into Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon and the first power into Crown King. Thanks for the video.
Lived here for 2 years hiking all the East (superstition), North (the lake trails), and South (mountain preserve)... Never heard of this one. I need to do more of the city hikes. They look quite fun. And thanks for that wave cave video btw. Met my significant other on that hike. Without it, I would have been lost (in more ways than one haha).
I did both of those trails, long, long, long ago - the Echo trail many times, the Cholla trail only once (it appears to be better marked now). Though I don't remember ever being in that cave. Sadly my knees won't let me do them again. Thanks for the memories. Sadly too many dummies from out of town/state try the Echo trail in the summer with no water. They often pay a high price for their stupidity.
I hiked the cholla trail each week… I prefer it to Echo Canyon although I switch it up every couple of years… We’re so fortunate to be able to take a long lunch break and go hit the trail truly a blessing to live here in the valley👊🏽🤙🏽💯
When I was really fit (and had a looser work schedule) I used to hike Camelback 3-4 times a week, and at least one of those times would be a yo-yo, up to the summit and down to the other trailhead, then reverse course back over the summit a second time. Its a great workout and the rock formations and trail layout (with scrambling sections) are actually pretty sweet for an in-town hike. My all-around favorite in town would be hidden valley up on South Mountain, it feels more remote from the city and some of the features like the tunnel and fat man's pass are real highlights. But camelback is pretty sweet too
I have hiked both these trails often enough. It is very refreshing to see these trails from your camera angle perspective. We are so fortunate to have these outdoor 'stair masters' in the Valley!🙂'
I agree with that 100%. I was actually complaining about the crowds once and my friend reminded me that where he lives he would have to drive 8~9 hours just to get to something like Camelback mountain. I love living here and having so many options so close.
Camel Back Mountain. Oh gosh! Growing up in Scottsdale how many times have I looked up and seen that profile against the sky--and the Praying Monk, as we called the rock formation on its "neck" (?). I don't think I knew there was a trail up there. Or maybe there wasn't back then, it was over 40 years ago (eek!). Enjoying your urban hikes and the visits to memory lane. Thanks!
@@westcoastislander6699 it was way smaller back in the day and you had to know how to get to the trailhead… Especially the Cholla side, so it’s no surprise that you wouldn’t have known about it. I don’t think a lot of people did 👊🏽🤙🏽💯
Jeri, I work with VETERANS in the Wickenburg area, the rural Arizona VETERANS that are underserved… Anyways, wondering if you have any interest connecting about doing some guided hiking trips for some of them…
Done a couple of hikes in Sedona, will keep this one in mind when we get back in the area. I won't judge you cause I like a good Carmel Mac. Every now and then 😊. Great video 📹 by the way. Thanks
Absolutely amazing.thanks for sharing your journey. Guys I recommended you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak.add this sound in your bucket list.
Maybe consider Piestawa. It has a more defined trail and isn't as much elevation gain. Black Mountain is another mellower one. Or you can even go for North Mountain which is easier still. Plenty of options in the City, but this is probably the toughest 'in town' hike in Phoenix.
Loved it. I know in town or popular hikes are not your favorite things, and I can agree. But, it’s nice that you video some of these for those of us who sometimes visit the area briefly. Maybe that’ll all we’ll have time for. Many thanks!
I was just re-watching a couple of your videos somehow I accidentally gave you a thumbs down I changed it sorry buddy I love all your videos keep up the good work
Okay,,,, by the time I went to get some tacos to watch the show it was over! Can you throw in a walk around your neighborhood next time. Come on Barry!
The fences are to keep people from falling off the trail, I believe. It's a sheer drop off and an in-town hike. So tons of people in all different ranges of abilities hike it. Definitely not the type of thing I would expect to see outside of town though.
Phoenix area is beautiful and so much to do. If you want to go somewhere that sucks go to Minneapolis, I live there and wish I could make Phoenix my permanent home.
Hiking mountain trails is a challenge that tests your endurance. However, the reward for overcoming these difficulties is unmatched.
I love asking for, a regular coffee, a little sugar and milk. They either get it with joy or they've never heard of it.
Haha! Probably haven't heard of it at Starbucks.

When I lived in PHX, my favorite was Tom's Thumb. I hiked to the top a month and a half after recovering from a heart attack.

That's awesome!

I need to do more hiking on South Mountain. It's pretty far away from my house though, so I haven't explored there much.
I´ve done that hike 40 (!) years ago: I met 3 people and there has been no fence!
Camelback is my “go to” hike to keep my legs ready for more adventurous hikes. The climbing on the Echo Canyon side isn’t too bad either.
Phoenix, looks more and more like a place we should visit!
I love it here. But...maybe wait until fall.
come in March, great hiking weather and catch a couple spring training games

I need to do this hike again. It’s been a while. Great video Jerry ❤😊
If that Starbucks you're visiting at the end of the video is the one by CCV on Happy Valley, howdy neighbor! Thanks for the great content!

No, it’s been there. I’ve been hiking it for 40 years :-)
@@arizonaunplugged-neilbrook9509 Oh thanks! Good to know!

That looks like a delightful hike, but watching you scramble over all those rocks I kept thinking rattlesnakes!! PS: your coffee order🤣
I'm sure there are snakes up there. Yeah...people who know me do not expect that coffee order from me. But hey, it tastes good!
Very nice man! That trail looks pretty tough…goes straight up with little break.
Still not as bad as climbing up to Surprise Valley.
I did this exact hike 13 months ago so thanks for letting me revisit it. Great views and challenging!
Beautiful !
Great video. Camelback is a great hike. I Love it!
Pretty serious trail for a one-armed man! Great views from the top and along the way. Assume Tina likes her Sunday mornings around the house. Thanks

Great video as always. Come to WA sometime and I can take you around to see some sights up here.
Love Washington! We nearly died hiking up to Colchuck Lake. Still had fun. It's so beautiful up there.
Hike up is challenging! Hike down is treacherous!
Definitely sketchier going down.
Absolutely amazing.thanks for sharing your journey. Guys I recommended you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak.add this sound in your bucket list.
I’m too old to do this hike. So glad I saw this before I tried it. Thanks!

Probably a nice hike as the sun rises. It’s a bit too crowded for me most other times of the day.
Definitely a crowded hike. But all the 'urban' hikes around here are.
I do this hike when I’m in Phoenix visiting family. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories and putting a smile on my face!
Thank you! Been wanting to do this hike. Thanks for the heads up what tm looking forward to doing it. ❤
Love this hike. It was my first hike in the Valley.
Loved it. I know in town or popular hikes are not your favorite things, and I can agree. But, it’s nice that you video some of these for those of us who sometimes visit the area briefly. Maybe that’ll all we’ll have time for. Many thanks!
What a view! No judgment here! lol
I was just re-watching a couple of your videos somehow I accidentally gave you a thumbs down I changed it sorry buddy I love all your videos keep up the good work
Haha! No worries.
Ive done both Echo and Canyon , they are both difficult but in my opinion Cholla is a little easier and more fun while Echo Canyon is more grueling.
Great hike, thanks for sharing. That fence is unbelievable
Greetings from Germany
Martin
I’m moving to Goodyear in a few months. Will you be doing and videos on the Sierra Estrella or White Tank Mountains?
I've done the same hike but I called an Uber to echo lol
That would've been smarter.
Why do you prefer shoes to boots?
I like shoes because they're lighter. And I feel more agile. I'll wear boots if it's snowy or muddy.
Tina didn’t want to leave her bed in the early hours of a sunday morning? 😜🤣
I've been reminded several times how much I still owe her for hiking Piestawa.
Okay,,,, by the time I went to get some tacos to watch the show it was over! Can you throw in a walk around your neighborhood next time. Come on Barry!
I know your name is Jerry, but I figure Tina fantasies about Barry. 😂
Fences on a hike??
From the map he showed and one of the signs later in the video, looks like it’s a Phoenix City Park, maybe? With private property on the other side…
The fences are to keep people from falling off the trail, I believe. It's a sheer drop off and an in-town hike. So tons of people in all different ranges of abilities hike it. Definitely not the type of thing I would expect to see outside of town though.
I didn't see Tina accompanying you on this hike. Couldn't you coax her out of bed at 4:00a? That doesn't sound like her! ; )
Although I like to give her a hard time, I knew to not even ask her about going on this one.
The only good hike around Phoenix is if you're hiking the hell out of there - FOR GOOD. That city and area sucks !!!
Definitely prefer wilderness. But it beats a treadmill.
🔥😂🔥
Phoenix area is beautiful and so much to do. If you want to go somewhere that sucks go to Minneapolis, I live there and wish I could make Phoenix my permanent home.
I can see why my brother loves living there. It's a beautiful place. Stay hydrated though. The heat is brutal, but you already know that.
🏜️🔥✌️🖖
I gotta say the coffee was a bit of a disappointment. Will give you a pass today.
Anyone who knows me and has heard my Starbucks coffee order has given me a funny look.
