How to Control Weeds in Paddy?
To prevent losses in yield, weed control is an important practice in paddy field. Weed control can be done through manual weeding by hand & mechanical weeding by using implements such as sickles, hoes etc. & can also be controlled by herbicide as a chemical control. Hand weeding is an efficient method of weed control.
Wild rice, saama grass and motha are main weeds of paddy crop. Due to competition of weed with crop, these weeds reduce the crop yield.
Weeds can be controlled by following methods -
By mechanical methods - This is one of the easiest method of weed control. In this method, weed are controlled by weeding-hoeing. Generally two weeding and hoeing are required to control weed. First weeding-hoeing should be done after 25-30 days of sowing while second after 40-45 days of sowing. Thus, outbreak of weed is reduced. Along this, by changing in agronomic practices like crop rotation, water management, deep ploughing and use of certified seed are also helpful in controlling of weed problem.
By chemical methods - In this method, herbicide are used to control the weeds at that time when there is no arrangement of labourers for weeding & hoeing.
As an herbicide, spray 1200-1500 gm butachlor in 400-600 liter water per hectare to control weeds. For broad leaf weeds, spray 800-1000 gm 2, 4-D in 600-700 liter water per hectare.
